The above review, (while the reviewer is entitled to his own opinions of course,) does not reflect the critical acclaim won by this simulation generally. To me, and many others, It still stands unchallenged as the best WWII air combat simulation to date. With a second patch (V 1.2) available which improves it even further, plus the two excellent freeware programs ('Enemy Coast Ahead!' and 'Meatwater's Sound pack,') readily available for download on the internet, I am still playing this sim over a year after its release. It is vastly superior to its competition, and one of the finest simulations ever made.
Great game, but starting to show it's age

This is a very entertaining game, but with Jane's and Microsoft combat sims on the shelves you'll have to get this game based on it's admittedly superior campaign missions. While the others give you a player to create and follow with promotions and medals and such, it's a lot more fun to follow your pilot with European Air War. The only gripe I have is that technology seems to be leaving this otherwise fine game behind. The scenery in other sims is making this one seem dull. Also while this seems to work fine using an older Pentium with an ATI rage card, a newer Pentium III with a SR9 card (allegedly better) gave enough weird results for me to set the machine to software rendering-which by the way worked just fine. Oh, and the answer is "no"-updated drivers and the patch did nothing. All in all a superior story line, a more entertaining feel, but let's you wish for a little more eye candy.

I played this game for the first time last night and I found that this is a fun and very beautiful game to play. With the patch, the game play is very nice and the graphics are great. The only problem that I have found with the game is that it seems to be too easy to shoot down enemy planes.
On my very first mission I (along with 8 or so other spitfires) attacked a German bomber formation of over 20 planes. The excitement of seeing so many targets in the sky at once is awsome! But, on my first pass through the german formation I was able to down 4 HE-111's which seemed way too easy. I may have the realism settings for the weapons or the planes set too easy and this may fix the problem, but it seemed that I only had to barely hit the bomber and it would explode into 1000 pieces. So, in my first mission I downed a total of 7 He-111's and was an ace right off the bat.
Otherwise, the excitement of the game was great and the graphics are stunning, I just need to fix the gun problem and set the target strength up higher (if I can).
Still the best!

I don't profess to be any expert on video games, but I am a private pilot and warbird buff, and these factors are what attracted me to this game when it was originally produced. I actually wore my original CD-ROM out, to the point where the game would skip views repeatedly, from playing it for hours at a time. I have tried to replace it, but it has gone out of production. I have tried to substitute other games; Flight Squadron's various versions, Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator, etc. None of them compare with the excellent graphics, the realism of flight sensation and ballistics, the numerous features and parameters, the user-friendly interface... European Air War surpasses them all! I remember some minor glitches with some of the formats, but since I haven't played it in several years, I can't recall the details of specific problems. When I had the game, I sought out patches at the company's website (then MicroProse) and it did help. All in all, I truly miss this game, and will buy it again if I can find a copy.
EAW continues to inspire!

I have been around computers now for most of my adult life. I bought my first desk top computer in 1990 and my first lap top in 1996. But I never considerd playing games on them, I mean computers were only for work. Right?
I might also mention that I flew fighters,(F-18/F-4)for 12 years in the Marine Corps. Well, the other day I was at the store and saw a game that caught my eye. My former fighter pilot intrest got the best of me so I took a chance and bought "European Air War" by Infogrames. Keep in mind that I had never been much of a "gamer", but when I saw the capabilty within this game I bought a new joystick and began to play regularly. I became so involved with this one game I bought the best desk top computer with the most advanced graphics card that I could find.
I now enjoy other games about WWII, but I am greatful to this one game that reopened up my eyes to that razor sharp world of being a fighter pilot. The skills I once used Fly my F-18 are still viable in these games. Only now I get to fly really cool aircraft like the P-47!
I give this this game 5 stars because of the sheer enjoyment it has given me, by allowing me to revisit my fighter pilot roots.
One of the better flight sim war games

I've probably seen all of them from the WWII era, from the old 1942 Pacific air war to IL-2 Sturmovik. This is one of the most entertaining. It flies pretty well and the graphics are almost as good as some of the later ones. It has given me a lot of pleasure.
I rank the best ones as follows: IL-2 (Sturmovik); Janes WWII Fighters; Microsoft's Combat Flight Simulator 2 (Pacific Theater); Microsoft's Flight Simulator (WWII Europe Series); and finally this one: European Air War,by Microprose.
My ranking is based on quality of graphics, smoothness of manuever with a good computer (mine is a 1.8 Ghz Gateway Pentium 4 with a half-gig of RAM and ATI) and the flight modelingof the aircraft (how close to the real aircraft they are in their performance). My judgment on the latter is based on the fact that I have flown a variety of real prop driven aircraft since I soloed in 1946, as well as many radio-controlled models.

With the amount and quality of *freeware* addon theatres, aircraft, and graphical enhancements EAW remains a high quality immersive gaming experience. The EAW community have now completed out of the box complete addon theatres for the Pacific (Midway and Guadalcanal), North Africa/Malta, and France/Dunkirk 1940. The Battle of Britain 1940 and European 1942-45 campaigns have been thoroughly upgraded. New theatres are on the way for the Spanish Civil War, the Winter War in Finalnd, and China 1937-39.

YOU CAN START AT THE LOWEST LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY THEN INCREASE TO A HIGHER LEVEL ONCE YOU HAVE A FEELING FOR THE GAME. IF YOU PLAY A GERMAN PILOT ALL VERBAL BRIEFINGS AND COMBAT CHATTER IS IN GERMAN, BUT YOU HAVE THIS TRANSLATED OUT IN VIDEO ON THE SCREEN. IF YOU KNOW SOME GERMAN THIS IS A GREAT WAY TO POLISH UP ON YOUR VOCABULARY WHILE HAVING FUN PLAYING THIS SIMULATION. THE GAME ALLOWS YOU TO MOVE UP IN RANK,BUT EVEN YOUR BEST EFFORTS WILL NOT CHANGE THE HISTORICAL OUTCOME.
EAW - the best at any price - even one this low!!!

You'll love this game even more with the alternative sound patches. My only complaint about this game is the repetitive missions in campaign mode. Yes, it may be realistic, but I think they could have changed it up a little bit.
