Try to remember if you want to buy this that microsoft customer service is laughable. You can be prevented from playing (server down time) every time you have the chance to play, but they will not even consider a refund. they really dont care about you, because they know that you want to play the game.
Regrettably, asherons call (albeit fun) is still just a hack and slash game, where the ability to create a simulated life and adventure is lacking. Those who write rave reviews are noy lying about the addictive qualities, but just remember there are many drawbacks. In a year, ego should be coming out on the x-box. thsi game offers the first chance for true role-playing fanatics to have their cake and eat it too. Good luck.
Great Game, But ......... One problem

AC/DM is a great game, new land to explore, new quest & weapons. You'll spend hour after hour playing this. All in all this game ROCKS !!, But, Housing :( If your not one of the lucking ones and found a house when AC/DM was first released. You'll have a very hard time finding one. (...) Since it came out I've been looking for a house (any house) with no luck. The only waty to get one is if one of your friends has one and is leaving AC. Or Trubine add more housing. Other then that THIS GAME ROCKS.
This game couldn't possibly stink more...

Unstable...is the bottom line. I think I lost track of the number of patches I have had to install. The graphics are nice, the gameplay is poor, and the lag is friggin terrible. Funcom is losing more and more customers each day from this game. I got caught expecting the best and signed on for a 6 month mistake. Don't do the same. Wait for a game that actually tests their software and executes successful betas before they release. This CD now serves as my drink coaster to remind me of my mistake
This Game Rocks

Though it has yet to come out, it is the most anticipated expansion pack coming out. Asheron's Call (issued in 1999), was the turning point for many MMRPGS. Asheron's Call brings infinate entertainment, excitement, and awe with their great graphics, monthly update ( including new content for the players), allegiance systems, quests, and more. Dark Majesty, will add even more to it.
Dark Majesty brings the current players, as well as new-comers, Housing, new lands never before seen, new Quests, and updated graphics to make your 3D card work as hard as it can. This is a great buy and will be great once it arrives. For those of you interested? GET IT! BUT, beware! Once you enter Asheron's Call:Dark Majesty...you may be forever addicted...

This is the best game I have played in a long time. I even have friends from work now that are beginning to play it and they like it as well. Recommend it to anyone that loves roleplaying game.
FUN FUN FUN - But xp chains and combat macros are a bummer

I've been playing since beta2 of Asheron's Call and I have to say during the first 2 years the game was the most immersive online roleplaying game I've had the joy of experiencing. It's still in my opinion one of the better MMORPGS out.
This game has the most content for any online MMORPG (and you get more of that with Dark Majesty) to date but many of the quests are poorly documented in game (hard to find without other people or having to look on 3rd party websites).
What ruined the immersiveness for me is the online community moving away from the roleplaying aspects and playing the game for experience and hunting. From my perspective what ruined the closeness that people used to have was many factors but mainly xp chains which factors around monarchys for experience points rather than friendship (People in the olden days didn't know about xp chains and joined on the basis that you liked your patron not because you had to pledge to him/her for xp chain placement). Combat macroing has also ruined this online world because it also adds to this moving away from playing the game for exploring, friendship and immersiveness. Combat macroing is for experience points and that's all.
~~~PROS~~~
-Rich lore (story line) that sets up the story of why you're here and why these Empyrean people that used to live in this land of dereth have disappeared.
-Low system requirements - I'm still able to run the game on a pentium 166mmx with a voodoo1 card. The system requirements may say minimum 300mhz but I'd say 300mhz is more of a recommended requirement because 166mhz with a voodoo1 and 64megs of system memory run the game fine! And though the game may be 4-5 years old it looks much better than screenshots give credit for.
-HUGE world and HUGE amounts of content and always getting more content through monthly patches
~~~CONS~~~
-If you move away from the games story line and immersiveness (which is easy to do if you run into the xp oriented people) the game becomes a hack/slash fest and all there really left to do is kill things (Look beyond that and you'll have fun).
-Combat macroing ruins quest dungeons and immersiveness.
-XP chains ruin the player interaction and makes the game move to a mindless kill the same monster quest. XP chains have had a chain effect slowly moving people away from forming groups around friends to making these groups formed around greed, and the soul purpose of forming the groups for self based XP.
Can It Get Any Better Than This

I've been playing AC since shortly after beta on the original, and have been a hardcore fan ever since. This game has it all: fun quests, great people, and a huge variety of stuff to sm00sh! It's hard to get bored with this game. When you're not hanging out at the mansion or lifestone chatting with your friends or patron and other allegiance members, you're out killing the monsters of Dereth, attempting to reach the pinacle level of 126! Definitely worth playing, who knows you might even find a "spouse"! (Yes, you can even get married in AC!) Just don't forget to get a house! Or where else shall you live? ^_~
Best MMORPG ever.
