Review - Anarchy Online
I am currently a member of the Beta community for Anarchy Online. For weeks now many of the community members have spent hours upon hours trying to solve countless unaddressed problems that FunCom are ignoring. To sum it up. Anarchy Online is an advanced and very graphical RPG, if you can get it to work. I personally believe that no self respecting programmer out there that would launch a game in a state like this. If you want to buy it, wait a few months.
No change no progress

Game issues have been ignored by FunCom for over two weeks now since their last major patch. Populations counts have fallen to ridiculously low levels, and I am about to jump ship and head for Dark Age of Camelot as a result of my exasperation, frustration, and disgust with FunComs colossal failure of the gaming community.
I strongly recommend NOT paying your own money for this game.
FunCom is -almost- a poster child of what an online gaming company shoud NOT do. They got a couple of things right. And they even pretended to fix some of the problems of this game. But they only pretended. After one set of problems was "fixed", me and my friends would discover that there was absolutely no change at all. FunCom claimed to have fixed the memory leak bug no less than four times before they finally got it right on that one bug alone. I will be cancelling my AO account, deleting this rubbish from my hard drive, and apologizing to all my friends I suckered into getting this game along with me.
It is unfair consider this a a game eligible for reviewing when for all practical purposes it is still in a very buggy beta mood. Abandon all hope ye who ignore me...

I must say, I was greatly disappointed. P3 800, 256 meg, GeForce 2.. u n p l a y a b l e btw, on a cable connection. Move for 2 seconds, hard drive hits for 10.. There is no customer support. Did anyone miss out on the fact that they have been writing code for this for 2 years?! I'd be embarassed to say I had anything to do with it. Funcom said they.... who cares, they didn't make it right. I'm not paying for beta.. er alpha testing.. sure EQ started with problems, but they made it right. Funcom fell on their face. Thanks for nothing FC :/
Good game, but wait....

Anarchy Online is a very fun game.... when its working. The problem is, since it went live on the 27th of June, that almost nobody can stay connected for more than a short while.
Those that can, for whatever reason (and its a small number) have leveled like the wind and are way ahead of the curve.
I recommend you wait a few weeks, and check for reviews from people who have actually played the game. I got my copy the day before the game went live, and I'm trying to think of a reason not to return it for nonfunctionality.
If the packet loss and connectivity problems are solved, the game will merit 4 or 5 stars. Its fun, innovative, has good graphics, excellant world design, good AI for the monsters, and even a real sense of humor. Funny when a newbie area monster ("Leet") is attacked and says, "I'LL GET MY MAIN!" and so forth.
So just wait a few weeks, then see. If the technical problems are resolved, its a must buy.
The worst ... I ever spent..DON'T BUY ANARCHY ONLINE!!

I really tried to give this game a chance. I did the Beta (which this game is still in) and it is still in beta almost a month after its release. FUNCOM (or as most people call them NotSoFUNCOM) has got to be one of the most disorganized companies I have ever seen. It took them almost a week to get their secure website up so that you could use your credit card to activate the game. The customer support is almost nonexistant and they only do it through email, they have said they will not be having phone help. The graphics are nice, but other than that the game(if you can play) is really kinda boring. Even when you go way out from the cities there is not much to do. I would save your money and wait for something better. On 7/19/01 they just lost the saves of characters and they had to reset to a previous saved character, which means you lost most of you items and lots of XPs. SAVE YOUR MONEY!! DON'T BUY ANARCHY ONLINE

One of the drawbacks of most MMORPGs is the immense time amount of time they eat up. It's often necessary to take weeks or months of daily play to establish a character that can do anything useful or fun. Not so in Anarchy Online. This game is very friendly to the casual gamer. Do a mission when you get home, have a good time, and log off. Amazingly, you can advance reasonably rapidly in that fashion.
Say goodbye to forced teaming with strangers or obnoxious guildmates. It is possible to play and enjoy the game entirely solo. While there are many opportunities for trade and hunting with others, you are not forced to do so. Funcom has taken the tactic of encouraging players to team rather than penalizing those who do not. While a few nice items only drop in team missions, they are generally purchasable from other players with ease.
Anarchy Online was released to blistering reviews because of lingering bugs. Those bugs have been squashed. I frequently play the test server, and even the test material is surprisingly stable.
Others have mentioned the stunning graphics, music, and updated plotlines. However, to me the biggest distinguishing feature of AO is the designers have eliminated most of the annoying features of earlier MMORPGs. Dying is slightly annoying, but never devastating or time-consuming. Your items can be reclaimed at the nearest reclaim terminal and you're back in business as soon as a brief "resurrection shock" wears off. No more dying 3 times trying to loot your own corpse! The worst thing that can happen is you will lose experience if you haven't saved before your mission or hunt. Saving is inexpensive and highly recommended, although mission settings are so thoroughly customizable it is not hard to get a mission uniquely suited to your taste and abilities.
You will notice when playing AO that the general playerbase is more mature than in most games. This may reflect the science fiction audience, or it may be due to the solo-friendly design. At any rate, you won't be forced to endure a lot of griefers and those nasty brand-new chars that cuss up a storm, harrass all the girls, and vanish. It happens, of course, but not often. I would also note this game allows you to choose from many character appearances, of different races, ages, and there are even 3 sexes, lol. While there are some risque clothing items for women, they are balanced by equally sexy clothes and bathing suits for men.
Note to parents: I would rate this game as being best for mature kids, preferably late teens. This game is not based in America and acceptance of sensuality/sexuality is a bit more open than you may like. Example, there is a red light district in one city with a club named "Heads or Tails." However, the club is just window dressing and cannot be entered. Another example: clothing shops sell items such as "Gift Panties." There's not much sexual content going on among players that I have seen, but it's worth a mention that some of the game design may be aimed at an older-than-13 crowd. I'd guess the average age of players is 20-30, rather than the more typical 14-18.

I played Ultima Online when it first came out. The horrible lag and other bugs made the game virtually unplayable. UO was also the first in the MMORPG genre way back in 1997. Almost 5 years later Funcom releases Anarchy Online. You would like to think that the company would do some research and learn from all the mistakes that the other games have made(Asheron's Call, Everquest.. ect) but it seems they did not for the most part. HORRIBLE lag, frequent crashes and numerous, game-stopping bugs make this no more than a beta quality game. To add insult to injury Funcom is actually starting to charge people stating that the game is "playable". The game has great potential featuring "mission generators" which gets rid of camping (ala EQ), beautiful graphics (when you're not beset by the horrible lag), awesome soundtrack, and smooth interface (once the MANY bugs are worked out). I was looking forward to seeing a quality product released by this company who created one of the best adventuring games of all time (The Longest Journey). I am terribly disappointed at Funcom for releasing what is so obviously just another Beta and charging the public for it. It's sad to see yet another gaming company to lower its standards just to try and make a quick buck. Maybe... just maybe Funcom will wake up and try to retain market share in an already competitive MMORPG market by either rapidly fixing this game or by temporarily stopping the monthly charges. Otherwise Funcom could quickly see all of it's current customers quit AO and purchase one of the MANY great MMORPG's that are coming out soon.
Beware Buyers - Wait til the company gets their act together

While Anarchy Online is an exciting new concept in online gaming that could replace the standard swords and sorcerors in the current "Big 3" online games (Asheron's Call, Ultima Online, Everquest), this game IS NOT READY to go online.
Anarchy Online is another online game that was rumored to have been released before it was ready to help the cash-stretched company obtain quick income. I played the Beta version up until the week before the game's release and while I was impressed with the sci-fi theme (and new online concepts such as everyone owning a house for their possessions) even with the smaller number of users in the Beta stage, the server(s) could not take the strains of running the game.
In other words, if you purchase this game right now, you can expect huge lags (This is the game pausing because the internet connections aren't working properly.), resolution problems and other frustrating dilemmas. These difficulties are even more frustrating when you consider that you're paying a monthly fee. During the game's initial release, the company did not start charging accounts because of the problems but as I write this review, the company has decided to start charging accounts which has many current owners of the game angry as they have yet to experience a "working" game.
It looks like a great concept for an online game, but the best bet would be to wait awhile and explore internet sources to find out the current state of the game.
Don't buy this... yet.

While the engine and gameplay system show great promise, the current problems plaguing the Anarchy Online servers prevent me from giving this game any more than a single star rating.
Of all of the time I have spent trying to play the game, only about 10% of it has been fun.
Read up on the problems at the official Anarchy Online forums for a better idea of all of the network, video, and RAM-gobbling issues that users are experiencing.
