Splinter Cell: D&A, great game but Sam's getting rusty.

Oddly enough for a Splinter Cell game, the control interface felt very clunky and awkward. Sam was nowhere near as fluid in DA as he has been in past titles. I couldn't even pull off some of the signature stealth moves like hallway splits. This series entry went more for "Hitman" style action. Which was still great, just different than expected and hoped for. Also the camera angle seemed uncomfortably close-in, making planning difficult for me personally.
Game difficulty was a bit uneven. Even on easy mode, there is an unforgiving learning curve and unbalanced enemy AI with amazing detection abilities. Despite many controller throwing impulses, the final levels are very rewarding but with a few "WTF?" moments on plot development, which I won't spoil. Let's just say that I blew up a lot of stuff and stabbed more than my share of terrorists. Definitely worth at least your weekend rental!

Sam Fisher returns again to wreak havoc on the enemies of the United States; this time he's working behind the lines as a double agent. He's got to protect the good guys and his cover at the same time. Do you have what it takes?
Enjoyed this game thoroughly; the back story is an excellent and integral part of the action, and the game lives up to the expectations set by its predecessors. Can't wait for the next in the series!
Easily the weakest Splinter Cell game to date

First of all, half of the reviews on here have to be plants. In reading their descriptions, they had a completely different gaming experience than me. The Splinter Cell franchise is probably my favorite ongoing series, and this game was one of the reasons I bought an XBOX 360 (especially since I've seen predominantly stellar reviews). So I'll differ from the rest and say that, while this game dresses like a SC game, it's more adequately characterized by moderate attempts at renovation which fail from lack of execution.
Let's start with the positives. Obviously, the graphics are UN-BE-EFFING-LIEVABLE throughout most of the game. This is no surprise, though, given the amazing graphics we've come to expect from this series. There are blatant environmental upgrades in Double Agent, regardless of whether or not you're descending along the face of a skyscraper, prowling across rooftops...whatever, that just beg for you to stop and enjoy the scenery for a moment or two. Also, the in-game save feature is a must for all of the Splinter Cell games because we all know that things can get messy in a hurry and the less you have to repace your footsteps the better. Finally, Michael Ironside returns as the voice of Sam Fisher, with a dark, gruff command we know and love.
Which brings me to my first gripe. The storyline here reduces Sam Fisher to a cross between Jack Bauer of "24" and Locke from "Lost," rather than a stone-cold, military hardass who could wipe both of them out without so much as blinking. With regard to story, this is not a Splinter Cell Game--it's an extended episode of "24" that plays out over the course of a few weeks or so. With Sam's daughter being killed at the beginning, I expected Sam Fisher's badassery to augment, not subside, as he's given a love interest and is thrust into a new setting with an underground terrorist group decorated with colorful characters who are also cardboard cutouts of television shows a 'la "24". Give me a break. These games have always been more or less "park your brain at the door" but at least they used to be grounded in the real world. This game is television.
Gripe #2: The controls. Horrendous. Expect to sneak up behind an opposition with the intention of quickly and stealthly knocking them out, only to have the controls become unresponsive because the game is seemingly EXPECTING you to grab them. Or, vice-versa, you will find yourself expecting to grab an opposition, only to have them repeatedly take one step out of your grasp forcing you to frequently bump into them and...well, we all know what happens next. More often than not, though, Sam will merely sneak up behind an opposition and just sit there doing absolutely nothing while you smash buttons hoping the guard in front of you doesn't decide to turn around. All in all, I'd say something similar to this happens about 25% of the time I'm in such a position, which is huge when you estimate that 1 in 4 guards will eventually get to turn around a blast you away just because the buttons were nonresponsive. Really frustrating.
Also, Sam's little ability to step off of a ledge then turn around and grab onto it? You never know when that's going to work here. Based on my experiences from previous SC games, I found myself constantly walking off ledges to wait for an opposition to step close to my stealthy reach, only to find myself committing suicide in mid-mission. Furthermore, sometimes when you are hanging from a ledge, Sam will just let go and plummet to his death without you so much as pressing a button. I thought, for a second "oh wow...Sam must get tired in this one...that's a little more realistic". Nope, it's just bad programming. On one other instance, I left him hanging in the same place for about 20 minutes while I ate dinner and nothing happened.
Finally, the gameplay is just flat-out ridiculous and tedious most of the time. Laughably so, even. Objectives are vague and leave you, primarily in your JBA headquarters, left to wander around aimlessly until you finally put two and two together to figure out what the objectives are actually trying to indicate. In one instance, you're even given about 25 minutes to complete a major objective, only to find out that you're not actually supposed to complete the "major objective". You're supposed to finish the other objectives then let the 10 minutes you have left simply run out so that you see a "cinematic" where Sam completes said objective. How the heck you're supposed to figure that out is completely beyond me.
Anyway, the game has its moments where its the Splinter Cell you love, but for the most part...I'll keep waiting for a next-generation SC title that's worth the pricetag.

For every splinter cell series fan, this game will not let you down, it will lift up your adrenaline rush as it really puts your skills to the test... For any new people to this game, this series is a stealth paced game, so don't expect big explosions or chases, it's a game design for people who like spy/action games... A.I. is very strategical if playing in hard mode... this is really the best splinter cell out... If you do not know much from this franchise I suggest renting first, though I assure you, you will like this one!!!! Quality people, quality!!!

this game requires a lot of stealth so for shooting/killing action it is pretty slow. i do like the strategy element of figuring out how to use the shadows and the technical equipment to avoid and distract the enemy. this is not a fast play game but if you have time you will enjoy choking out a lot of bad dudes. enjoy
Same game, but not really

God, I love Ubisoft ... how do they keep doing it?
I think what I love most about this version of the game for Xbox 360 is that while you're in the same locations as the Xbox v1.0 version, the game play is completely different ... it's as though Ubisoft created two different games.
Can't quite give it 5 stars, though, because some of the game play is a pain (like building the bombs in the second visit to the JBA's headquarters ... much more difficult than it had to be) and the story is OK at best.
Still, this latest chapter in the Splinter Cell franchise is a welcome addition.
Can't wait for the next chapter, Conviction.
Must Buy!

I own Splinter Cell: Double Agent for my 360 and I love it. The voice acting is awesome, the music was really well made to fit the game, and the action is great. It's one of my favirote games for the 360 and I also think it's one of the best games out there. The best Splinter Cell game so far.
Solid fun and intense excitement

First a confession, I never played a SC game before Double Agent. I don't know why I didn't, but I didn't. I've seen a lot of reviews comparing them and I can't speak to that. This is totally a newbie's review.
I thought the game was really good. Every mission had a multitude of way to complete it. The voice acting was great, especially Michael Ironside. The storyline was interesting. The missions were very varied and the graphics were really good.
My only beef is with the nature of the game in spirit versus execution. You're supposed to be a spy who goes in covertly, steals stuff, kills guys, and various other sneaky things. That's great. I love games like that. (the Thief and Hitman series come to mind) But SC:DA doesn't really make you do that. With the exception of a few key characters you can go in guns blazing and bring the house down. There are consequences for this but it doesn't feel real enough. If you're going to the trouble to create such great openended missions, the consequences of your execution should also be equally well crafted. I just wasn't feeling that.
Besides that, the game was a lot of fun and I would recommend it to fans of the genre. Go ye forth and spy.
A disappointed Clancy fan...

Let me begin, by stating that I am a fan of most things with Tom's name on them. I have enjoyed most of the Rainbow 6 and Ghost recon games. I also enjoyed the original Splinter Cell game. I tried this one, because it was on the 360 (vs the pc where I played the previous splinter cell games). The graphics were well done and some of the games moments were well done. That said, the whole thing felt a little too much like a puzzle. Sneaking around to avoid guards, unable to use a weapon, occupied way too much of the game for my liking. The choices added little to the overall enjoyment of the game. The gadgets, as always, are fun. So, if you like puzzles or aren't bothered by repeated attempts to sneak by guards in the name of fun, you make like the game. If you would rather keep moving and keep shooting, try Rainbow 6, Las Vegas...
