This game is the best Mega Man game on the original Nes. If you have an Nes you must get this game. The reason I say this is because Protoman kidnaps Dr. Light and Mega Man has to stop him. Find out why would Mega Man's brother would kidnap, remeber in Mega Man 4 he was a good guy. I won't give away the entire story but this game has alot to keep you interested. Check it out.

Decent game, but it has flaws...

After saving the world from Dr. Wily's evil intentions, Mega Man returns home... only to find that robotmasters are causing chaos and Dr. Light's been kidnapped! The culprit? Mega Man's brother, Proto Man. But why has he turned evil? Actually, you soon find out that it's an elaborate [plan] to frame the horribly underrated "older" brother of the blue bomber, and so here begins my review of Mega Man's fifth adventure on the NES.

THE GOOD
The storyline is actually among the best in the series and it allows a refreshing change to the normal "Dr. Wily's at it again, let's get him!" storyline. Proto Man actually has a substantial role in the plot and I believe him to be a very underused character (Capcom, MAKE HIM HIS OWN GAME.). Beat is also introduced in this game and he's quite useful. This game is the only game that allows him to attack bosses (and makes Wily at the end seem like a walk in the park!). The game is thankfully a bit more difficult than 2,3, and 4 with the evil "Darkman" stages. The graphics are also better and the backgrounds even have parallax to them.

THE BAD
This game has a more powerful "Mega Buster," but every time you get hit, you have to start the charge over again. This wasn't that huge of a deal, but I wish they would've kept it more like MM4's Mega Buster. Also, the music is mostly mediocre with only a handful of tunes that are really memorable.

OVERALL
While not a bad game, I find it hard to rank it above the first four games. It doesn't -quite- touch the first four in terms of charm and the good, old fashioned "Mega Man feel." I really can't explain it, and perhaps if it had better music, it would've been better. The game doesn't connect well with the others at all, which is quite a shame. My feelings on this game are very mixed, but I still recommend at least playing it through. It is, after all, essential to your Mega Man library.

Where the downward spiral began

It was in 1992 that Capcom released Mega Man V, the fifth NES installment of the "classic" Mega Man series. This would be the second to last game in the series released on the now-extinct system. Was Capcom able to make improvements on the past games, or is this just a subpar entry in the series? Read on for my review.

PROS:
-THIS GAME INTRODUCES BEAT AND THE MODERNIZED MEGA BUSTER. Beat is an often overlooked character in the Mega Man universe, but his presence here can really help you out - and having to search for the parts that are used to create him adds to the challenge level of the game. Also, this was the first game in the series to have the modernized Mega Buster that fans of the series know and love.
-THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST CHALLENGING ENTRIES IN THE SERIES. If you liked Mega Man IV because of its aspect of challenge, you're going to love this game - it offers more of the same.
-THE GAME FEATURES A SPECIAL ITEM FOUND ONLY IN THIS GAME - THE SUPER ARROW. The Super Arrow is an interesting item that is hard to describe in words - try it for yourself to see what I mean.

CONS:
-FOR SOME REASON, CAPCOM CHANGED THE SOUND EFFECT THAT IS MADE WHEN YOU DESTROY ENEMIES! This isn't that big of a deal, but still, it can be annoying at times. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!
-THE RUSH COIL HAS BEEN RUINED. Now instead of springing off of Rush, Rush springs off of the ground, and you must jump off of him at the peak of his jump! I'm glad they ditched this after this game!
-IF YOU GET HIT WHILE CHARGING YOUR MEGA BUSTER, YOU LOSE YOUR CHARGE. This is extremely annoying, as you'll often see in the heat of battle.
-PASSWORDS DON'T SAVE EVERYTHING. The passwords will only take you to the first station of the fortress, and they won't save your energy tanks. Of course, a gamer seeking a challenge could see this as a good thing.
-THE STORYLINE, WHILE INTRIGUING, CONFUSED MANY FANS. I'm sure that this plotline (along with the Mega Man cartoon) convinced many fans that Proto Man is evil.
-THE RUSH JET HAS NOT BEEN FIXED. In Mega Man III, you had precision control of the Rush Jet. But in Mega Man IV they ruined it, making it so it was always in motion until Rush flew into an object. This is SO annoying. Why didn't they fix it?
-THE SUPER ARROW ISN'T EXECUTED VERY WELL. Although this is an interesting item, I don't think that Capcom did a very good job with it.
-THIS IS A SUBPAR ENTRY IN THE SERIES. Just about every other Mega Man game on the NES beats this one out in terms of quality.

OVERALL:
Overall this is a good game, but it falls flat when you compare it to the other NES Mega Man titles. Still, the weaker Mega Man games are better than the strong titles in most other series of games. IF you're a fan of the series, it's worth checking out.

Second worst NES Mega Man, but still good

Proto Man has turned evil and kidnapped Dr. Light? He assembled an army of robots and unleashed them on the world? Come on! I'm sure a first grader could figure out Wily is behind this. And the innovations here? The Rush Jet is still in the "piece of junk" mode from Mega Man 4, and the Super Arrow is next to useless. The music is not good in most places. Proto Man's fortress is a NIGHTMARE! I'm a master game player and even I have trouble with it. There is no Energy Tank in the final fortress station, so if you don't have any to use on Wily you're gonna lose and probably have to start over. Most NES Mega Man games are great, but this is just mediocre.

Mega Man V is definitely the weakest of all 8 original Mega Man games. It's so easy that you can beat it with the Mega Buster all the way through. You don't need any of the weapons because each of the bosses dies very quickly as good ole blue Mega Man. I beat the game within a couple of days [...].

I first played this game on my emulator 4 years ago. I found this game to be extremeley boring. There is nothing new with this game and its just not on the same level as the 4 before it. I recommend u to stick with the first 4 Mega Man games and avoid this one if u are new to Mega Man. I never got into any Mega Man games after 4, not even Mega Man X series. Maybe its cause I am older now but I seriously think if this was a good game I would have liked it when I first tried it.

Getting Old.

Mega Man V is not much different from the other four games before it. If you liked the first four and want more, I would suggest that you get this game. However, the gameplay is has not changed much from the first four and this is the Mega Man game where the gameplay starts to get old.

There is not much that I can say about this game other than that if you still want to play another Mega Man game after the 1st three, get this one.

The reviewer below me thinks Mega Man 5 is easy, but I think the game is REALLY hard. Of course, I haven't played the game in a good 10 years, and I'm sure I'd be a LOT better at it if you gave me another chance.

I just can't stop thinking about how much I used to die over and over the last time I played it. I was always much better at the X series. Still, no one can deny that Mega Man 5 is probably the lost favorite. It's just a shame the game is going for so much money today. If you want it, you better buy it on that Mega Man collection for the Playstation 2.

The best mega man entry on the NES!

After looking over some of the reviews for this game, I was surprised to see that most of them found this game to be mediocre. This is absolutely untrue since of the many mega man appearances on the NES console the fifth is the best. Firstly the grafics are clear and near flawless. Secondly the storyline is the most original of the series. Finally a collection of great bosses and their respective levels; my personal favourite being gravity man. Being an NES nut I am biased in my reviews of these games. Mega man is certainly the top of my list of favourites and if you haven't played any yet try Mega Man 5 to start.
