Overall, this is the hands down the best game for the DS. I'm sure you're wondering why it only got 4 stars then. Read on...
The graphics and gameplay are all excellent. Nintendo didn't reinvent the storyline (Bowser Jr has kidnapped the Princess again), but they didn't have to. When you have a storyline that works, stick with it. You have the option of playing as Mario or Luigi (Luigi is kind of a secret I guess), and the gameplay is as solid as the original Mario Bros. The addition of the touch screen is handy and ingenius. You can keep one extra item (like a power-up mushroom) in your inventory, and when you press the icon on the touchscreen it appears over Mario's head. Your position in the level is also on the touchscreen.
The addition of Star Coins also add an extra element to the game. There are 3 star coins in each level, and some are tricky to find. Nintendo also added a Super Mushroom that makes Mario super big, a mini-mushroom that makes him very small (and able to run on water), and turtle Mario that allows Mario to tuck into the turtle shell when dashing. I found the turtle shell Mario hard to handle.
There are some mini games that were thrown in, but they are tiresome after one time playing. Many of them I quit out of before the game finished because it was boring. I didn't try the multiplayer so I can't comment on that aspect.
The worst thing about the game, and all Mario games in general, is that they are over when you beat them. By over, I mean they do not have any replayability (I know that's not a word :)). I sold mine back after I had beaten the game and collected all the star coins. I still highly recomment this game, if for no other reason than the nostalgic value. You won't be sorry. You can get $20 bucks at Game Stop (or EB Games) for it too!

We love this, from my seven year old whom we bought the game for to my husband and myself. It is the best of the old mario games put together. Very fun and challenging.

THe graphics on this nintendo DS game are stellar... the controls are a bit hard to get used to, though. THis definately kept me hooked until I beat the very last level- not too hard of a task. After, there are even many secret levels you can unlock if you have already beaten the koopa kastle. Definately a must have in every gamer's collectiionn!
Good game, average for Mario

This game is a little overhyped. It is fun but rather easy to finish unless you try for every coin in the game.
There's a good variety of enemies and bosses, but the boss battles are too easy. The levels are very creative, my favorite part about the game.
The powerups are rather impractical. I ended up using fire power for 90% of the game.
The game is overpriced considering there's minimal replay value, just mini games.
