i thought that this game could have definitley been better considering how much hype it recieved. i played thid game for three days and beat it, no guides or gameshark. the game truly is nothing special but the story line will leave you wanting more so i will continue to buy the series, but be warned that true RPG players will most likely find this game easy and not worth the money you'd pay for it!!!!

It takes awhile to get the hang of navigating "the world", but the game is exquisetely animated, the characters and settings are diverse and imaginative, and the story is complex and engaging.
Entertaining, but short

.hack//infection is a worthy introduction. But sadly that's all it really is, the first of 4 games in a series. That said, let's move beyond my one big quibble and talk about the cool aspects of the game.
You play a newcomer to "the World" a "massive online role playing game". You and a friend are hanging out when he's struck down by a mystery assailant. You have to find who did it, and why.
The combat system is innovative. The interaction between you and the other characters is fun. The amount that you can customize your party is interesting and the visuals are gorgeous.
Sadly, one more problem - there aren't enough PC's in the newb area - as anyone who's played EQ can attest.

OK. For me, this game was long awaited. I had already seen the .hack//SIGN series so the continuation of the story was a must. The gameplay is wonderful. Think of Kingdom Hearts... just... slightly different. Basicaly you control your team members by giving them orders. It sounds kind-of strange, but it is -really- easy to get into once you play it. Very addicting and interactive battle system. On boss fights the battles can get quite intense since there is alot you need to pay attention to. A far cry form the standard Final Fantasy style battle system that so many RPGs use(d). The story for .hack//INFECTION is interesting, even if you haven't seen .hack//SIGN. Granted, I think .hack//SIGN should be watched to get the most out of the story, but it isn't necassary. I know you have all read the summary of the story elsewhere so I won't take your time to explain it. The only problem with the story here is that it leaves you hanging. Literally. Nothing is explained for the most part. But then again, we all have to keep in mind that this is a 4 part series. So if your willing to hang in with Project .hack for those 4 parts, then I advise you get this game, it's truly beautiful.

...is what I would have called .hack//INFECTION upon its first being released. 6 games, and countless anime episodes and manga books later, I would still stick with my original decision.
In this game the player assumes the role of Kite, a newbie character in the fictional MMORPG (Short for Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) "The World" set in the "distant" year of 2010. Upon first logging in, Kite is invited by his real life friend, and fellow player of "The World" (known as Orca) to an area to level Kite's character up. I'm not going to ruin too much, but Kite and Orca quickly finds himself face to face with a monster no one has ever seen before.
The monster puts Orca in a coma, and Kite soon meets a mysterious girl named Aura that presents the newbie with a "Braclet" that infuses Kite with unimaginable powers beyond those of any character in "The World".
This game is filled with bold characters, countless areas (Literally there are 1000's of random areas one could invent.) and a unique storyline packed with twists and supprises along the way. Although the story can be a bit dull at times, and the dungeons can get quite tedious, the game is truly a masterpiece, and is worth the time of any gamer with a thirst for adventure.
(It is also my reccomendation that one should play this before diving into the .hack//G.U. series.)
