If you enjoy crossword puzzles, then this is the game for you. The number of puzzles included is amazing (3 years worth of daily puzzles). Also the handwriting recognition is almost perfect and makes it very easy to fill in the puzzles. Trust me, if you like crosswords then you will love this game!

If you love the challenge of a crossword puzzle this is the way to do it.
Easy levels to start, with choices for progress.
You can work the puzzles like New York Times with increasing levels of difficulty each day of the week, or you can pick your level and stay there.
Graded for time taken and hints used to complete.
No more messy erasures or blotchy crossouts!! Love it!

Exactly what I had hoped for

The interface on this game is great....couldn't be better. If you're considering this item, then you probably have some sense of what kinds of puzzles to expect...they increase in difficulty by day of the week, with Monday and Tuesday being easier than Wednesday and Thursday, and so on. Being able to select puzzles from a calendar lets you decide what size challenge you want.

There is a useful "hint" feature that I really like when I'm stuck...it will fill in any missing letter that I request, or verify that a letter I've placed is correct.

I expect I'll get a couple years of fun out of this game.

Enjoy this game very much

I bought this game for my wife and she loves it. She likes that it has different levels of difficulty as well as hints, etc. It's a very good game all around.

Finally, a Video Game For The Geeks Out There

I am not your traditional gamer. I'm a 21-year-old female English major who gets sick from the graphics of most video games. Nevertheless, I purchased a Nintendo DS because the small screen seemed promising for my gaming issues, and I'm a big Mario fan.

One of the games I ended up purchasing was the New York Times Crosswords. I love it. There are several playing options: Puzzle Week, Challenge, Quick Puzzle, and Multiplayer, allowing you to have several puzzles in solving mode on each profile. I've never done Multiplayer, so I can't speak to how it works, but in general I stick with Challenge, which lets you pick your puzzle by date--there are three years worth of puzzles to choose from. I can make it through the Monday puzzles relatively easily, but there is a hint feature available, which provides you with the correct letter for the selected space. Keep in mind each time you use it, however, it costs you in terms of the letter grade assigned to you when you complete the puzzle.

Replay value is infinite. Even if I get through all the puzzles, which will likely take me YEARS, you can replay any of the puzzles previously completed in order to try to beat your old score/time.

If you have a DS and are looking for a game that's not quite a game, pick this up. You won't be disappointed. The only downside is the music--very repetitive, but I didn't buy this thing for the music. That's what the radio or my MP3 player are for.

If you love a challenge - this one's for you!

Some puzzles are easier than others. It's really fun to use in VS mode and have 2 people working on one puzzle. You get points for correct answers and subtracted points for wrong answers and you see it all in real-time! Our family is really enjoying this game - educational too!

Simply awesome!

I got this as a lark when I got my kids their DS system. I figured since I was shelling out all this money for them, I might as well get myself something. This has turned out to be the best Christmas present I have gotten myself in several years.

The interface is very intuitive. You can zoom or shrink the size of the puzzle to four different sizes, so you will be able to find the size that you like best, or switch around between a few as you complete the puzzle. You are timed as you complete the puzzle, so I am always trying to get a record time on the Monday puzzles, etc.

There are also hints, so if you are stumped, you can ask for a letter. When you're all done, (or the boxes are all filled) the puzzle will circle any incorrect answers and let you fill them in correctly. You are penalized with additional time added to your "score" if you use the hints.

The puzzles themselves are the same ones as the ones in the paper, so they are organized by difficulty according to the day. I think there are about a thousand puzzles in the game, so this will last awhile...

If you complete a whole week of puzzles (Monday through Sunday) you will unlock a super bonus puzzle - an extra big sunday sized (or bigger) puzzle. That is fun!

I have had to make some minor adjustments to how I write in the letters - for some reason if I start a capital g from the inside and go out (clockwise) it will recognize it as an o no matter how many times I re-do it. But if I start on the outside and go counter-clockwise it will recognize it with no trouble, even though the end result is identical. Kind of weird. It will recognize both capital and lower case letters, and it suggests that it will "learn" to recognize capital letters the more you use them. Maybe. All I know is that I cannot get it to recognize a capital H unless I make two vertical lines and just barely cross the second one. But this isn't really an issue, as it will recognize a lower case one almost no matter how messily you write it. It's just fun to mess around with stuff like this - seriously, it's not a negative in the least.

I really can't recommend this highly enough. It's so cool that I would buy a DS and this game just to do crosswords. Now I have to fight my kids for one of the DS's unless it's after bedtime (we have two DS's and four kids), so I just might do it anyway...

Perfectly implemented

I do the NYT puzzles on paper, and wasn't sure this could be any good. But it is great, really intuitive to use, and the handwriting recognition capability is terrific. It is a great way to take puzzles with you when you have to sit and pass some time. Highly recommended if you are a crossword fan.

Must buy
