Gameplay control is much worse

3 Rating: 3, Useful: 3 / 4
Date: December 27, 2006

What i dont like about this game is that you lack the hot routes and the defensive changes you could make with a flip of the right analog stick like in the PS2 version. I have to admit, the graphics and gameplay are so much more realistic. Also, the motion sensor in the game adds a little realistic edge. If you move the controller while on defence before the snap, you will be called for offsides. They changed the controls around (like R2 is to sprint) but if you think about it, that move does make sense. When you held X to sprint in the PS2 version, you would have to let go of it to do a spin move or a juke.

Should you buy this game? I'd say yes. If you want this game, dont drag it on, because then you might as well wait for Madden NFL 08 (Every Madden game comes out in August).

Eh......

Mediocre at best. I'd actually rate it at 2 1/2 stars. I like the graphics, but the gameplay is not all that "smooth". If you havn't bought it yet I'd wait until Aug and get 08. Hopefully they'll have it worked out by then. I definately miss the hot routes.

Worse than Madden '05 on PS2

I have been playing Madden '05 on my PS2 for 2 years. It's super fun to play and has great graphics, etc. I bought a PS3 and of couse the first game I grabbed was Madden '07. What a complete dissapointment. I expected something great and what I got was a step back. This doesn't even deserve the Madden name on it. Talk about throwing a game together too fast just to get it out...that's exactly what happened here. I suspect that Madden '08 on PS3 will be much, much better because this one is pathetic. The designers should be embarassed. However, this is pretty much par for the course with the PS3 games I've bought. Thank goodness I bought the PS3 for the blu-ray as well because the gaming is not what I expected by any means.

Not ready for prime time

If you're looking for a game to play head-to-head or don't care about Franchise mode, the game will be fine for you. The graphics are great and the gameplay is good for head-to-head mode, but everything else about the game is really, really bad.

1) In Franchise mode, CPU teams sign Hall of Fame players to their team -- in a recent game against the Vikings, YA Tittle was the QB and Chuck Bednarik was on defense! This makes franchise mode almost unplayable.

2) There is no way to edit player ratings

3) There are no formation-specific substitutions

4) The announcer is a generic radio voice -- no Madden!! (which may be a positive for some people)

It looks like this game was rushed to market and is nowhere near a completed product. I'm back to playing Madden for the PS2 on my PS3.

I Expected So Much More

I have been playing Madden forever, and have gotten every single new version since 2001. Every year got progressively better, and while I didn't like some features when they were new (i.e. - the quarterback vision thing) I learned to deal with them and use them.

I expected this release to blow my socks off. I was expecting to get confused as to if I was watching a game or playing one. I was horribly let down.

The graphics are okay. I expected more honestly, a lot more, but I won't give EA too much crap for a game on a new system. A little, but not too much. I fully expect '08 will graphically excel and own all.

Graphically, in terms of how things are laid out and viewed, the game blows. Depending on your team's colors, time of day, weather, and field, the score/game clock/play clock can be next to impossible to decipher. Play calling is an exercise in frustration. Playing a human opponent in the same room, allows him/her to see the plays you are picking, there is no triangle, circle, square selection. You have to highlight your play and hope they fell asleep waiting. So now you go to the line, and they know you are doing a half-back dive. Damn you EA you think as you see their line backers creep up. Sure you could audible, but that is almost worse than just going for it and seeing what happens.

And no Madden? I mean c'mon. Its called "Madden" for the love of God. Sure his comments are obvious, his voice annoying... but we love him nonetheless.

Overall I get the impression that EA tried way too hard to make this Madden different, so as to herald the PS3's release, but in the effort they ruined the best thing they had going.

So to conclude I have a short wish list for EA.
1) Improve the play calling function
2) Improve the graphics (I paid a lot of money for my PS3 and I wanna see what it can do!)
3) Change the user display, go old school
4) Bring back Madden

Final word: you are much better off playing the '06 PS2 disc and waiting one more year.

I got this game the day it came out and I had to wait about 3 months to get a ps3 to play it and I got the 60GB. The first thing you are going to notice when you play the game is the shift from ps2 to ps3! Like the gameplay is slower than the lightning fast ps2 version and also the controls are different, like R2 is to sprint instead of X, but you'll get use to it. Also, the menus are hard to navigate and they sometimes freeze, like you'll be trying to view a teams roster and it won't let you go back to the menus. Second, the graphics are so cool but some of the players faces don't look like themselves and reggie bush's face, oh my gosh!, but he's fast with the cool highlight stick, also there are no referees or the chain people on the field and there is no net behind the field goal post and when you kick the ball and it is good it goes through like there is a net, now that is weird! But I recommend this game if you don't have this year's madden on a another platform or your new to video games and you like pro football. Well its just another year for us madden fans, but we are definitely hoping that madden 08 is going to way better.

Frustrating at times and fun at times

I bought the PS3 and Madden a few weeks ago. I figured I would get Madden since it was a long running series, and was sure to be a solid game. There are some things about it which are fun and some which are frustrating. (I haven't played a Madden game in years, so most of the features listed below are new to me.)

Things I like -

- Superstar mode
- Graphics - (except for the barren sidelines and the scoreboards which are the same blocky, ugly graphics for every stadium.
- Training camp practices - These run a lot quicker than regular games since you don't have to keep hitting buttons to skip through cutscenes of defenders standing around, etc. Would have been nice if there were an option to have games play the same as practices. Just give me the details without flashing to the scoreboard and showing the yardsticks, let me pick a new play and keep playing. Instead, it seems like most of the game is spent in-between plays while the radio announcer and the scoreboard suck up processor speed while restating the obvious. Training camp is much more fluid because you choose a play, run the play, receive a limited text description of the outcome of the play, and then start over again.

Things I dislike -

- Having to set up your "influence" over and over during a game. I made a "superstar" halfback, and every time my team's offense goes onto the field I have to set up "influence" again. Wouldn't be so bad if it didn't take 10-15 seconds of jerky graphics just to get to the influence sliders. This is especially annoying when I was playing in rookie difficulty, and had more influence than I could spend on the available options. Would have been nice if the game could have just assumed I would want to max out both my stamina and toughness.

- Point after touchdowns - Why does the CPU opponent have to wait 5-10 seconds before attempting a PAT? It's pretty much the shortest kick any kicker ever has to attempt.

- Field Goals - Why does the CPU routinely miss field goals? In superstar mode you can allow the CPU to control your team when your superstar is not on the field. Bad idea if you ever want to make a field goal. The CPU seems to miss any field goal outside of the 30 yard range. Unless you've got the ball inside the 5 yard line, don't count on those 3 points - even then, I wouldn't put any money on the kick. On the other hand, player controlled field goals are fun and seem to have a reasonable amount of difficulty.

- I really, really, really dislike the radio announcer. This is a frickin John Madden franchise. I want to hear John Madden do the commentary, and would love to have Al Michaels doing the play by play. The only Madden voice overs we actually hear are during play selection, and they are helpful tips, but I was hoping to hear Al Michaels get excited about a running back breaking free, followed by Madden talking about the big guys up front opening a hole, etc. If they are going to relegate Madden to little tips during play selection, then I'd rather they just call it EA NFL 07. At the very least, I would like them to find someone with a better voice to do the radio announcer voice.

As others have said, the game doesn't feel entirely finished. I'm willing to forgive EA a bit for that though since I expect that their decision to release the game was not only for money, but also to get the Madden franchise up and running on the PS3. Unfortunately, it's up and hobbling, not up and running.

Madden 07 Aweful!!

I have never experienced such a betrayal by an individual title in all of my gaming experiences from back in the Atari days. I owned a PS2 and owned the Madden 07 title for that console, (5 stars by the way) but this has been most disappointing of all experiences.
Madden and the usual announcers are not there. Instead you get some crazy guy that sounds like a radio announcer. The game play is totally different, the franchise mode has lost over half of the cool functions of the game. Oh, did I mention that it has the same title as the PS2 version, but doesn't even come close to the quality of game play? The only thing that gives the game any credit is the graphics, and they look as if someone slapped it together in the 720 format hoping that the increase in definition would make up for the shortcomings. DO NOT purchase this title if you have owned previous Madden titles. I have owned them all for the series and this one is dead last in terms of game play and overall enjoyment.

I really am dissappointed in the in the drastic changes made in madden 2007 on the ps3. Its frustrating navigating the layout not even to mention the new way to substitute players the audibles are different hot routes are different, button layouts were switched. Oh well guess i'll just be happy and satisfied with my old ps2 version for now.
