I paid way too much for this game when it first came out. I should have opted for Anarchy Online at Fry's where I instead purchased the tedious Arcanum. Steamworks really appeal to me, as does fantasy roleplaying and gaming in general but this game was a true disappointment. I created several characters and generally anything aside from a warrior is going to get trounced right off the bat. Perhaps I'm just not that skilled with magick-users and such but sheesh! I really hoped for a good experience with this game but even in (especially in) multi-player it's time-consuming and bug-ridden. Oh, well - live and learn! It might be worth its current price but don't expect to much from it and be prepared to endure alot of headache searching for items to survive with. Overall, unfortunately, its a waste of your cash.
Give them time

If you are tired of waiting for this game to be released and starting to wonder if it is worth it, don't worry. Sierra, along with Valve, published Half-Life much later than expected. Half-Life is STILL the top 3D-shooter game since it's release in 1999. Give them time, they will give you want you want - and a whole lot more!
My very favorite game of all time

And I play a significant number of games. Arcanum's got charm to spare, and a great leveling-up system. The combat system is...not the best, but it's more than made up for by everything else.
Could do worse, a lot worse

Yes, yes, yes, the graphics aren't the greatest and the load times are long, and there are bugs even with the patch(I was credited with completing certain quests without even hearing of them), but this game tells a fine tale, showcases a rich world, and provides a rich system of gaming to delve into.
In case you didn't know, this is a world where an old school fantasy world is coming into the Industrial Age. This is a world of mystic plate armor and revolvers, dwarves with shotguns, and elven mages summoning demons next to a train. The various quests available illuminate the problems that arise when new ways clash with old. The things you do in the game can range from questing for a magic sword that is the only weapon capable of killing a demon to arguing for the unionization of orc factory workers.
Problems? Interface is awkward. There's no keyboard button to initiate combat. Instead, you've got to click on a button on screen. Usually by the time you do that, that angry half-ogre with the mystic great sword has already closed the distance. This makes ranged weapons less than desirable, since hand to hand weapons are far more potent and it's easy to get into melee range in just one turn (two, if you're really far out).
Also, despite the openness of character development, there are some odd omissions. For example, while you have the option to create a variety of technological items, you don't seem to be able to create magical items. Those have to be found or bought. Plus, I don't see why certain races don't allow you to play as female characters. The manual tries to give explanations for why female dwarves and half-ogres aren't around, but I think that's just a cop-out.
As for an earlier review that talks about not being able to do something about the abuse of women, I think I know one of the scenarios that's being talked about, but I don't know what the complaint is. This is a game where you're pretty much allowed to slay everything that walks, so you are able to cathartically pulverize those awful pixelated characters.
Great for anyone surious about role playing games.

The graphics for this game isn't that awful. At least it's better than most rpg's I've played on PC. If you like fallout the series I suggest getting it.
Great rpg game

It has been YEARS since I had played a game so immersive. It is clear that a lot of thought and detail went into this game. I have been playing for 10 days and based on what I've heard, have barely scratched the surface of this game. By the way, it's true that the graphics are not great - if I want graphics I'll play Max Payne - the graphics are more than sufficient.
Excellent game

The graphics are a bit dated but thats not why you're going to buy this game it's the story. The story is EXCELLENT this is no hack and slash gain levels game. I would and have recommended getting this game to everyone I know who's into rpg's and yes it is out, after a fashion =>.
Might be delayed, but the release is closer...

Some games are just really worth waiting for. Arcanum is one of them. There is no other game that quite matches the nearly limitless capabilities of this game. The replay value is great - there are so many options. You can be a diplomat (don't need to kill anyone), magick user, technologist, or magick+tech. The animations are smooth, and the combat can be really fast-paced in real time OR in turnbased. There are even different styles of combat - turn based, fast turn based, or real time, like the Baldur's Gate games.
The game focuses on magick versus tech (if you've not read the Daily Radar review yet...). This is pretty different from many RPGs where you kill like crazy or you adhere to D&D rules. Arcanum uses a point system for character development - not unlike the Fallout games. This gives you much flexibility in developing your character. There is so much more in the game that if I tried to tell you right now, it could take years. And I've not even gotten the full game yet.
So yeah, maybe Sierra DID delay the game. But that shouldn't deter RPG lovers - especially those who loved Fallout. Thankfully, Sierra moved up the release date...
