Horrible... Simply Horrible!

Ugh!... First of all, the graphics are really dated and have no business being in a ($) game. Second the combat system is really bad in both turn-bases and real-time. The voice acting and NPC interaction is very poor.

The only good point about the game is that it supposedly has a lot of depth. But, you'll never experience this depth since the game is so bland that you'll stop playing it after a couple of hours.

Last point. This game is NOTHING like Fallout and in no way is it better. To even compare it to Fallout is a crime. Arcanum is quickly headed to the bargin bin of hell.

impatient people suck

be patient, every great game takes time to make, if they had released it last year it probably wouldnt be half as good as it will be when they do release it. Ya, waiting sucks, but if it means significant improvement on the game, GREAT!

Excellent Potential. Story needs a little work...

This game BIG, people..I mean REAL BIG. Character creation is as detailed as you could possibly want it (perhaps a little too detailed) and the game itself is no different.
My one and only complaint about the game is perhaps that there is more talk and less action than in most games out there. You do have to spend an awful amount of time running around talking to people to advance the storyline and/or to try to improve yourself with quests and by learning skills. The game follows a Might & Magic kind of advancement style for skills in that you have to go FIND people in the towns who will teach you (for a fee, of course) how to better your skills.

Pretty Good

I enjoyed playing this game. It allowed a lot of freedom in character development, the plot was good, and there was a vast world to cover. The game system was great, creating characters allowed more freedom than any other game I've played, and, unlike almost all other games, being evil wasn't to hard of a path to follow. This game exceeded my expectations by a lot, and I would highly recommend it to anyone who likes RPGs.

I gave it four stars because of a few things: (1) Long range was handled awfully, and a good bowman could go through all of their 100 arrows in about 15 seconds. (2) Magic looked the least glamorous of any option, with small red, green, and purple puffs or vague glows surrounding a character. A lot more time could've been spent on graphics. (3) There was no pause button. What's up with that?

Those are the negatives. However, dealing with them is very simple, and you get used to it quickly. Buy the game, and you will enjoy it.

One of my favorite RPGs

I love Arcanum's depth. The story line is complex and open enough that you can roam about without killing the storyline (most of the time). The music and setting is a welcome change. The charcter backgrounds help round out characters nicely. Magic characters are a lot easier to use than tech characters; they sure have a lot less stuff to carry. The tech tree is a bit difficult to get used to. The Arcanum Guide is definately worth buying. It can be a bit awkward to pick items up at times, and it's possible to drop something important, and not realize you lost it until much later (when it is too late to recover the item). Arcanum is a "save often" game. I would love to see a follow on game using an engine similar to that of Neverwinter Nights. And I would like to have a lot more female races available. Overall, Arcanum is hours of fun. I've had the game for years, and still enjoy playing.

Arcanum kicks...

I personally think that the concept of the choice magick and technology is a very cool idea.I mean lets face it some of us like to torch things with a flame thrower rather than worrying about running out of stamina while trying to heal yourself because your mage-like character was to weak to defeat a mutant monkey or something.I have played the demo of arcanum and cant wait for the game to come out. From my experience i know that i suck with magick and can only rely on strength and technology thats why this game is so great.YOU CAN CHOOSE WHAT YOU WANT.Plus theres also unlimited character creation so your character can be whatever you want it to be.Overall I think Arcanum:of Steamworks and Magick Obscura is going to kick....

It was released too early, like so many games

It may not happen to others, but I get a total screen freeze
about every 10 minutes. I have a high-end game machine. I have the patch in, it doesn't help.
My other games don't have this problem. Sierra's tech support (the maker of Arcanum) are not helpful. If you like a pretty good RPG - it could have been a great one - buy it. Otherwise, keep your money.

Great game

The game runs on my machine(600 PIII) with no problems. I have added the available patches. This game is different from many RPG's. It takes place in a world with great detail, combining technology and magic. I am about 1/2 way through the main plot, which is very well conceived. If installed on a properly setup machine(latest DirectX and drivers), it should run fine. It will look and sound great. I therefore highly recommend this game. You will be entertained.

Arcanum is awesome!

This is an awesome game. For those of you who are worried about bugs, there are patches out that will fix them. I played it through twice & then used the World Editor. While the original World Ed isn't that easy for beginners (and I'm a computer programmer), the follow-up has a very logical design and is easy to figure out. Unless you're skilled at scripting, about all you're going to make is a hack n' slash dungeon, but the people on the Arcanum forums are very helpful, and will give you tips if you ask nicely.

The music is excellent, and I don't know why people think the graphics are dated, they aren't bad! But if you want a game with an engaging storyline (unlike some recent computer RPGs), where you can completely develop your character from the beginning and you're not restricted to certain skills, and has a fantasy world that has the most depth I've ever seen in a computer game, Arcanum is for you.

Full of Annoying Bugs

This game had so much promise. The other reviewers are right--the developers spent a lot of time on the details and history of the game. Your character can be endlessly customized and you get the sense that there is a lot of depth to the world. There are tons of quests and a lot of quirky details in the game.

However, the bugs make the game a very annoying experience. I have a Pentium 3 1 gigahertz computer, a 16 meg video card (good enough for most games out there), and 384 megs of ram--way more powerful than the minimum specs. I also downloaded the latest patch. Despite all that, I spend most of my time crawling through the terrain. For whatever reason--even when nothing is happening in the game--my character starts moving in slow motion. I don't know why--cause the graphics seem to predate IceWindDale. The game isn't accessing the hard drive and there shouldn't be any hard number-crunching going on, but periodically the game slows to a crawl. Half the time things are fine--then bam!--my character can hardly move.

The cities are nightmares of slowdown. Even moving down the street can be a chore. The game would be so much fun if I didn't have to constantly pause for a couple of minutes while my character tries to walk past a building or vainly attempts a conversation with a key npc.

I will return to the game when they patch it properly. However, I wouldn't recommend playing it now--and I certainly wouldn't recommend paying more than ($) for the way it is now.
