This game was different, with it's victorian touch with a Baldur's Gate feel, yet at the same time a mixure between
technology and magic. I liked this game alot at first, but it lost my interest as the game carried on... But who can compare to
Baldur's Gate, or Icewind Dale? All together, it's a fun game...
I would suggest this to us who're fantasy fans that ran out of black isle games and wouldn't mind a hint of different..

Started out slow, but turns into a great RPG experience

I was never a fan in the past of fantasy/technology mix games - they never seemed to me to come off right. This changes all that. Not only do they go together well in this game, the story really makes them fit, showing the conflict between magick and technology. The game started out slowly, but became a great experience. A lot of games talk about how many varied ways you can play the game, but this game truly has that. I played a pure magick, technology hating character the first time, and though I loved it, I saw how many other ways to play it that there were, and I haven't even TOUCHED the game editor or user created modules. This is a MUST HAVE for any computer RPG fan.

It even can be better prg than Fallout 2

Largest world that I have ever seen
Talk, sneak, fight and many other options to solve any quest in game
Story is good
Open world
Good npc system
You can play it again and again and still you found things that you have never done before.

Game mechanics isn't best in world, but if you can live with it, then this is one of best games in world history.

Great rpg. Has one of the best skill system evere, where you choose between magic and thecknology. It look a bit out dated graphical, but if your a fan of turned based rpgs this is a sure wonner.

Still great after all these years!

I'm hooked. patches are available and the game keeps me entertained. This one still has one of the greatest character builds around.

I LOVE this game!

I love this game! I was so glad to find it since I lost my original a while ago and they don't sell it in stores anymore. Even better it works with Vista Home Premium! I was worried I wouldn't be able to run it with all of Vista's issues but I have played the game 3/4 of the way through without a glitch.

Eventhough this game is one of my all time, favorite games. The picture that they use(d if changed) to show the game is honestly False. And I Bought the game thinking that I would get the jewelcase and everything that came with the game, when it was new (the picture thet makes it look like the game come in a box). But that was not the case (think the normal plastic game case that's used when they try to get out the last cents out of the game).

So as i said, this is a great game that deserved a purchase when Troika existed and it still deserves a buy now. I just hope, that the original creators atleast get royalties, for mine and yours purchase.

I let others tell a more indepth and (more grammaticaly correct) objective review.

My very favorite game of all time

And I play a significant number of games. Arcanum's got charm to spare, and a great leveling-up system. The combat system is...not the best, but it's more than made up for by everything else.

Could do worse, a lot worse

Yes, yes, yes, the graphics aren't the greatest and the load times are long, and there are bugs even with the patch(I was credited with completing certain quests without even hearing of them), but this game tells a fine tale, showcases a rich world, and provides a rich system of gaming to delve into.
In case you didn't know, this is a world where an old school fantasy world is coming into the Industrial Age. This is a world of mystic plate armor and revolvers, dwarves with shotguns, and elven mages summoning demons next to a train. The various quests available illuminate the problems that arise when new ways clash with old. The things you do in the game can range from questing for a magic sword that is the only weapon capable of killing a demon to arguing for the unionization of orc factory workers.
Problems? Interface is awkward. There's no keyboard button to initiate combat. Instead, you've got to click on a button on screen. Usually by the time you do that, that angry half-ogre with the mystic great sword has already closed the distance. This makes ranged weapons less than desirable, since hand to hand weapons are far more potent and it's easy to get into melee range in just one turn (two, if you're really far out).
Also, despite the openness of character development, there are some odd omissions. For example, while you have the option to create a variety of technological items, you don't seem to be able to create magical items. Those have to be found or bought. Plus, I don't see why certain races don't allow you to play as female characters. The manual tries to give explanations for why female dwarves and half-ogres aren't around, but I think that's just a cop-out.
As for an earlier review that talks about not being able to do something about the abuse of women, I think I know one of the scenarios that's being talked about, but I don't know what the complaint is. This is a game where you're pretty much allowed to slay everything that walks, so you are able to cathartically pulverize those awful pixelated characters.
