When my husband and I first played this game a few years ago, it was the most engrossing and delightful experience we'd ever had with a computer game. It was wonderful to play together, keep a journal, think and talk about it with each other as we went through the days puzzling it out.
The added bonus that I found with Myst, was that it woke me up to my environment. Playing this vivid, three dimensional (on all levels) game that demanded one listen to every sound, look in every corner, behind every door, etc. increased my sense awareness. Suddenly I was paying greater attention to and appreciating the amazingly vivid three dimensional world I live in every day. I think the Myst games are good for your spirit and your soul, which I can't say about any other computer game I've played.
An engrossing experience

When I first got this game, I immediately became obsessed with it. I spent hours each day trying to come up with solutions to all the puzzles. It was all worth it, though.
The basic story is fairly unique. You are dropped onto an island without a clue as to what is going on. Exploring the island, you find two men trapped inside books. They are brothers, and each claims that he is innocent and the other is guilty of killing their father and burning his books. Obviously someone is lying, and you have to figure out who by traveling to different ages through other hidden books and putting together the clues you find there. By the end, you must come to a decision about who is innocent and should be set free. However, before you can do that something happens that makes you rethink the entire scenario. I've probably said too much already, and I won't say anything more about the plot.
Myst's graphics were amazing when it first came out, but now look rather simple and cartoonish compared to Riven and Exile. This is why the game misses out on the full five stars.
Also notable is that Myst is the only game of the series that never ends. Once you have completed your mission and freed the right person, you are free to keep exploring as long as you want. Although it might be nice to see some more ages, there is simply not enough space on one disk, and the five ages that are available are very scenic and enjoyable. If you want a unique game that may even give you a new perspective on your own life, you could do a lot worse than Myst.
It's a Must-Have Fantasy Game

Myst is a game for patient people only! It takes a hours to complete a single puzzle! But Myst has enough wonder to keep you curious. The game has stunning 3-D graphics, great music, and fabulous sound effects. Myst is like a whole new world. If you are a fan of fantasy books like Harry Potter or The Hobbit, I urge you to get this game or any other Myst games.

Great game! Enjoyed many puzzling hours with my grandson, but beware! This edition only runs properly on Windows 95. If you have Windows 98 you will need to look for the Masterpiece Edition (...)

Ok, i have to admit, in the begining i was a bit frustrated with the whole not knowing what the point of the game was, but i soon learned that it was all part of game--in fact its meant to be a puzzle in itself. Not only is this game full of challenging puzzles (that cannot be solved by guessing, but only through careful examination of the environment, so for those of you who depend on trial and error this game might not be for you) but the entire game is a mystery to by solved.
If you're impatiant or dont like to pay close attention subtle clues or note taking (namely fans of action/shooting/blood and gore games) i would not recomend this game. But if you want to be challenged (and if you get stuck there are a number of online guides to help out) this game is great and has been made into a series for a reason. Its difficult but not as much as i have been led to believe because the the puzzles and clues connect to both each other and the end solution of the game.
The music is great and fits into the atmosphere and the scenery is wonderful (especially considering how old this game is). This plays out as a quite a story and if your one of those who really get into fantacy books/games i would recommend this for you as well.
Ingenious gameplay, beautiful graphics.

When I was younger, this game interested me to no end. The lack of action baffled me for the longest time, and I could not understand how people figured out the puzzles. I was age 9, and curious.
Years later, now much older and hopefully knowledged in puzzles, I retook the gaming experience. I finished this game with little problem, although I will say the puzzles were exactly that - puzzling. They were pretty difficult, but nonetheless enjoyable. It spurred me on to play the sequel to this, "Riven", and the sequel after that, "Myst II". They were both good as well, but that comes in another review.
The graphics and plot were very well created and of high quality. The backgrounds, although beautiful, don't allow you to free move around, much like the third one. That is my only complaint as to this game. The clues are very subtle as well, although I think that was the point - to make you think.
I would definitely recommend this to those of us who love puzzles and figuring them out with a scant amount of evidence to go on. It seems a little arbitrary sometimes, these clues, but they make sense as you think about them more. It is mostly just pattern recognizing as far as the gameplay goes. You definitely need time to play this game though, it takes awhile to figure things out.
Timeless

I am not much of a computer gamer, but this masterwork by the Miller brothers still holds a place on my harddrive(s) eleven years after its initial release. Furthermore, it is the best of the Myst saga (if I'm not mistaken, there's a FOURTH installment?! WOW).
Like a Meshuggah album, you will be frustrated at first, but patience is both demanded and rewarded. The only real gripe I have about the gameplay involves the tram at the end of the Selentic Age. Ugh!
This is the best-selling computer game of all time, and for good reason.
Best game ever made!

Thinking on buying this game? Do it! Do it now! This game is the best thing I've ever played, and will be for a very long time! If you're into anything visual, then this game has you written all over it. The graphics are great! If you have an older computer with an operating system such as 95-98 it should run really well. And if you really want to get into it then I'd recommend buying 'The Book of Atrus' wich is a novel to go with the game.

I played this game before I understood what a computer actually was... Needless to say I have few memories of ever playing it before the age of... well 15... However, just this summer I stumbled upon it; the saga of Myst. Due to an undescribable want to play (and finish) Myst, I ran it to my PC and installed my original copy. Then the story began...
After about 6 hours of hard work and unending determination I finished the first chapter in the Ages of Myst... Though that doesn't seem like all too much gameplay, I acknowledge my haste and unrelentless desire to complete the game. Of course for the past 10 years I owned Myst I never actually got to finish it. Victory is mine!
Nonetheless I enjoyed every waking minute of playing this game. I look forward to finding Rivin and Myst III; I know I have them somewhere...
In fact, I've been so swept by the gameplay and challenge that I just bought both Myst IV and Myst V from Amazon.
Don't let this puzzle adventure game slip by, in fact explore the whole series! With a combined total of 80 hours of gameplay, you'll be busy.
