Some reviewers have complained that you cannot play this in windows xp, but you can. Goto "my computer"; click on "program files"; click on "myst".......this is after you have installed the game; right click on the game icon...... a picture of a book; click "properties"; click the "compatibilty" tab; check both boxes that say "run in 256 colors" and "run in 640 x 480 resolution"; click "apply"; then click on game icon and enjoy. The game is hard but fun if you have patience and like thinking games.

I bought Myst based on the reviews that I found. All of the reviewers seemed to like it and so did the people I knew who played it. Unfortunately, that just led to a huge disappointment when I played the game.
One of the main selling points of the game was the beautiful scenery. I will give it that, the scenery is indeed well-done. However, I was often annoyed by how much stuff they threw in that you couldn't do anything with. You wander around, find something that could be interesting and realize that it doesn't really do anything. The whole game felt like a demo for what computer graphics could be like instead of an actual game.
What's more, I found the game pretty boring. Nothing ever really happens plot-wise. Which doesn't have to be a bad thing, really, if there was something interesting to keep your mind off that fact. I spent the whole time I was playing the game fairly bored. I also admit to having to use a walkthrough to get past a couple of puzzles. And they weren't ones I felt stupid about afterwards either. The hints given in the game are awful. Many solutions to the puzzles come out of left field. And then I hit the piano puzzle which I found impossible to get past. After a few hours of failing miserably with that I gave up never to play the rest of the game. And after reading the rest of the walkthrough was not at all unhappy about that choice.
One of the best

This is without doubt one of the best computer games I ever played. The consept is totally different from any other game. The graphics are amazing. The story is incridible too. For the first time in computer gaming you actually FEEL you are the person in the game. Simply one of the best.

I like this game...i really do, but i just don't get it. I'll agree that the concept is wonderful, and the graphics are great, and the story is stellar...but geez, i just don't get a lot of it! I love books, and eat up logic puzzles and games, but i just don't like this game enough to try to wade my way through the absolutely too complex world that you're supposed to journey though to do...what? I think that's what urks me the most...i have no idea what i'm supposed to be doing half the time...and somehow that diminishes my enjoyment of the game. I'm not certain whether to recommend this game or not. If you can get a chance to play it without buying it, i'd go that route, then if you like it you can buy it, but if you don't you don't have to waste your money.

I was not really interested in video games but my husband talked to me about Myst and I tried it. I LOVED IT. It is smart and entertaining. It took us about 2 hours a day for a week to solve the puzzles. So it is not too long and not too easy either.
I really recommend it.
Why is this a classic?

This game continues to haunt my memories as an irritation because of it's length and puzzles, which usually amounted to no more than treading back and forth across the island of Myst. While the environments were increadibly beautiful, they fail to make up for the miserable gameplay, which has you go to one place at least 5 times to solve five different puzzles. The story is intruiging, yet the game's ending fails to please the player, since, you'll discover shortly after completing it, it could be completed in a matter of minutes.
A good game for 10 to 20 dollars, but you shouldn't spend more than that on this weekend game.

Although almost 5 years passed after this superb game was launched is still competing the new adventure games. The reason why is of course the atmosphere and the loneliness of the game that with the help of the mysterious soundtracks makes you feel that you are actually in the game. Finally some challenging puzzles are here in order to make your life difficult in your search for Atru's sons due to receive from him their punishment for what they have done.I better live you to find the rest by yourselves..!
An awesome mystery and puzzle solving game

This is such an innovative game! My brother played it before so it was easier for me, but I still loved it! Right now I've defeated 3 levels, and I'm addicted. BUY IT OR YOU ARE MISSING OUT! The sound is cool and the graphics are good too. If you are not very experienced at solving puzzles like these (when you explore places and find out about them and their history), then get a hint book, or my brother. Once you understand the patterns throughout the levels, it becomes even more addictive. I would recommend this game to everyone!

Ok, I have played Myst a good bit, so I can personally atest to the complexity of this game. I will half to admit, that I used the strategy guide a great deal to help me, because some parts were just impossible. First of all, you half to be extremely knowledgeable before you even attempt to play this game. There are things that i don't even understand, and im not dumb. But the most difficult thing is tying together little pieces of the game to figure out one piece of the puzzle. I really like this game, and have yet to beat it. The music is haunting almost, and makes you feel like you are there, walking in a realistic 3D enviorment surrounded by things that you have no idea what they are, but will tie into the game as it progresses. There are also 5 completly diffrent "Ages" : Myst island, The Selentic Age, The Stoneship age, The Mechanical Age, and The Channelwood Age. This is a very complex and difficult, and i would warn anybody who play it to be ready for a good challenge.
Surely worth a go

An easy game to crack on -- but it's the game that got me into computer gaming, me and, I suspect, many other people. The basic idea -- you arrive in isolation, with no information, and have to figure out EVERYTHING from square one -- is appealing. The graphics were great for the time and still look good. The music is pretty cool. The acting ain't bad.
Faults are the story -- the more you figure out the less interesting it is, the horrible ending, and some contrived puzzles. Some people find this game very difficult -- I remember I got stuck only once, and it was a matter of not looking carefully where I was going. In other words, it's far less difficult than it's reputation.
Not everyone's cup of tea, but a classic, really, and worth a look.
