I purchased this game about a year ago, and I started up the game and I had no clue what was happening. But as soon as I saw how everything was working out and it simply became easier. This game takes alot of thought and this is a game youll be hooked on. I have played this game hours at a time. The graphics for this game a very nice and the Quicktime Animation enhance th experince all the better. I eventually beat the game (after cheating two or three times). Some of the puzzles were almost impossible where I just stood back and was like "huh?". But all of the secrets of Myst Island are explained in the Library (hint, hint!), but I would recommend buying the Masterpiece Editon if you really want this game.
Let the world and the story immerse you--I love this game!

Contrary to my usual reviewing style, there is little I can add that would be different from what previous reviewers have said. Plus, being that this is a game, I would not be doing well to give anything away to those who have not yet played/beaten Myst.
If you like(d) Myst, I strongly recommend that you purchase more games from the Myst franchise, as well as the three epic Myst novels. These in particular are all fantastic works, and they give background information that makes the Myst story come alive. I guarantee you will like the other Myst games and the novels.
My only suggestion is to seek this game in its later, remade incarnations (the one where it's included along with the second and third games in the series is the best value) because there is no real point in pursuing an old, original copy.
A side note: This game, at least in its original incarnation (this one, in other words), has very poor Vista compatibility. Upon installation, Quicktime kicks up some Dickens but allows the game to install and run. The game hangs on a regular basis, crashes frequently, and, as a result of the Quicktime issue, none of the movies work. This means that, unless you've played the game before, a vital part of the game play is missing. There are some eerie absences where those movies should be. Essentially, the original Myst game is no fun whatsoever on Vista. Later editions and rehashes are likely more compatible, and I have read as much. I include this information only for the benefit of those, like me, who have a legacy copy of the game from the original release.
All in all, there really isn't much to say. If you've played Myst, then you know. You just KNOW. And, if you haven't played it yet, what are you waiting for? Get ready to embark on one of the most engrossing and immersing journeys you'll ever face. Oh, and be prepared to become hopelessly obsessed with Myst--it really is "...the surrealistic adventure that will become your world."

"Myst" is the one that started it all. "Myst" is the game by which all other role-playing games are measured. No one had any idea when the game first came out in 1993 that it would eventually become the best-selling computer game of all time.
Rand and Robyn Miller, the brothers who created the wildly successful game, hit upon a winning idea. Place someone into an unknown world where the clues he or she uncovers reveals the story. And one of the biggest perks of all - you can't die.
"Myst" starts off by dumping you on a dock overlooking a vast ocean. You can hear water lapping along the dock, and a wind makes the hair on your neck stand up. And from there it only gets more interesting - you discover books that can link you to other worlds like this one, more commonly called Ages; you encounter all sorts of devices that, even though they don't appear to do much, are all part of the underlying thread tying the game together; and just by wandering around you immerse yourself in the world that is "Myst."
Occasionally, I meet people who are baffled at the success of "Myst." They don't understand how a game where you just walk around and solve stuff can be so appealing. There is little or no character interaction, they say. I've noticed that a lot of these same people are those who like those "shoot'em up and splatter their guts all over the wall" type of gamers. The reason "Myst" has been so successful is because it so pure - you don't have to worry about dying, you use your head to get your way through things, and each new Age you encounter is just bursting with intriguing things to discover. That and each world is beautiful. Not as jaw-dropping as "Riven" and not nearly as mesmerizing as "Myst III: Exile", but "Myst" has a subtle yet majestic beauty that makes it stand apart from other games.
If you have never played a computer game before, give "Myst" a try. You will be surprised at how addictive it can become. Did I mention that there is no possible way in which you can be killed? Seriously! How many games today offer that? There's a reason why it has been such a hit; millions and millions of people can't be wrong.

Christmas morining, 1993. I was nine years old. I can still remember that day like it were yestserday. i woke up, ran down stairs, and looked in amazement at what santa had brought me. I woke up everyone in the house and forced them out of bed. A few minutes later i had my big brother, parents, and grandparents gathered around the christmas tree. Then i tore my way throught the wrapped gifts. After a few a came up on one that i wasnt expecting. MYST. i stared at it, not knowing exactly what it was, then i found out it was a computer game. After we finished unwrapping gifts, and ate breakfast, my dad loaded the game on to the family computer. I was fascinated. I felt as is a was grabbed from my chair and ripped into the game! I played for hours on end. I even believed that sleep was a rude intrusion of playing time. I admit, I had to go get a strategy guide, but i only used it when I felt that I was in dire need of it.Beat the game after awile. Then what? I got so cuaght up in it, that after i was done, it felt like something was missing.
Then, in 1996 Riven came out. I bought it and fell in love all over again. These two games are with out a dought, my personal favorite games of all time. The story is so deep, that you begin to feel atrus's pain. The scenery is so beautiful, that you will feel like you are there. I cant tell you if you would like the game, i know people who hated the game. if you would like a game where you can sit down, walk around and look at beautifull scenery, or solve a mystery, then by all means get this game. But if you want something alittle more exiting, stay away from this.
If you do buy this game, please dont go online and read the walkthrough, it ruins the experience, and the adventure. Take your time, dont rush it, its better if it takes you a few weeks than if you better in a couple of hours.
You may want to delay buying myst, becuase in november, they are going to put out a new version of myst called realmyst. It will be in real-time 3d, instead of just being pictures. that means you can walk around in the environment in 3d, instead of it being like a slide show. There will also be changes in weather, and it will change from day to night. There will be animals roaming around, and the clounds will move and trees will sway. There will also be a whole new age (world) to explore, with new puzzles. You won't be disappointed if you wait. Also look out for MystIII:Exile, coming out in the 1st quarter of 2001

This is the first PC game I ever bought. With it's awesome graphics and compelling story, it's easy to see why this is the top selling game of all-time. In it's time, this game and The 7th Guest changed the way gaming was to be. Most point and click games you see today are following these 2 trend setting games, but it's very hard for them to match up to what these games accomplished. It has some very tough puzzles and about the only lacking was there isn't much going on when you click on an area except for sound which is a key for most of the puzzles you will be solving. If you like point and click games with puzzles to solve, this is the game for you. A thoroughly enjoyable game that I have played close to a dozen times.
It's a Memory Maker.

If I could erase one memory from my mind, it would be this game. Why? Because I'd love to play it again from scratch.
This game is for adventurers who love solving mysteries without a time limit. No one hunts you down. No monsters or armed killers hide in the shadows. There is no annoying background music, only beautiful sound effects and water lapping up on the shoreline. The graphics are breathtaking.
The puzzles made sense (unlike later Myst games). You solve them by gathering clues scattered throughout the different Ages. Even when I had no idea where to proceed next, I found the landscape and buildings intriguing. Sometimes I simply "strolled" the island just to absorb its beauty and tranquility.
When I least expected it, I'd run into a clue or a secret passageway. It was thrilling. To finally solve a puzzle was ecstasy.
This game has a Zip feature that allows you to race through areas of the island you've already explored. Myst is never boring.
Every sound you hear could be a clue to something else. This game is loaded with gizmos and gadgets to click on. Some are clues. Some are not. All are fascinating.
The memory of Myst will stay with you forever.
A must-play classic.

This game is incredible. I first played this game when it debuted in 1993, and I was blown away by the stunning graphics. Now, in 2000, the graphics look dull and primitive, but the gameplay is still ahead of its time. It isn't incredibly difficult (compared to its sequel Riven) but it's very MYSTerious, thought provoking, and just plain entertaining (and sometimes frustrating) to play. Myst isn't considered a classic for no reason.
Duh! The classic!

It's been a while since I've played this game but I just finished Exile (Myst III) and was reminded of how much I love Myst. This game is a surreal experience; the graphics and music are exceptionally soul-stirring and the story draws you straight in. The puzzles are pretty hard, but they're very clever and I managed to beat it with only a little help from family members watching me play (this was several years ago and I was still young). The puzzles may seem contrived, but it all makes sense since they're part of an eccentric guy's imagination. If you have never played this, I can't even begin to describe how much you are missing out. May want to check out the Masterpiece edition instead, or maybe RealMyst (though frankly, the purist in me objects to it).

This game is exellent. However I recommend buying the updated version "realMYST". This version you can't pan around to gage your surroundings. They are both the same game, but the graphics in the updated realMYST is a vast improvement over this version.
Excellent!

One of the best adventure games ever! Shame it's for older computers and it makes me miss mine. If the gaming companies ever remake Myst for XP I'd buy it again in a heartbeat.
