Slow paced but understandable for a Mystery-based game

This game is a step away from the action titles I'm accustomed to playing on my new PS3. However, that is not a detriment. This game requires a game-playing style used for games like Final Fantasy. It is not necessarily about skill but finesse with strategic elements like beating some folks with a certain type of folk. (Again, a very final fantasy type idea)
What makes this game really great is how it is different from an rpg even though it is very definitely similar to one. The player still controls the character. The character can block attacks instead of simply just taking it. There is always full movement for the character, and the game is still action-oriented enough so the mystery solving parts of the game do not require the player to journey to an unknown region with naught but a map. (My biggest gripe about games like Zelda: Phantom Hourglass)

So, enjoy this game by taking it in. Enjoy the beautiful visuals. Enjoy the interesting and dynamic storytelling methods. Enjoy "leveling up" your folks. Enjoy using your sixaxxis controller to capture folks (it is really cool!). Most of all, try to figure out what the hell is going on. That'll make the experience the most enjoyable.

Give it a chance.

I would have to say I am an old school RPG game fan and not seeing many of those I picked this game due to the great reviews.
I played it for an hour and put it away for 2 weeks. So not wanting to have wasted the money I gave it a chance and played past the Prologue. After that the game took on a different feel and its a bit enjoyable except for the comic book scenes (rather than real voice the dialogue is done through a single picture with word bubbles...next picture, more word bubbles.)
All in all old school meets new school.Either get used to it or stick to RPG card games, least thats how I see it.

Folklore from a novice player

This game has two characters to choose from. The plot is the same, it revolves around murders that occurred 17 years ago and seem to be happening again. The great thing about this game is the character plot is not the same. If you choose Ellen (the easier version) you travel down one path. If you choose the reporter (the harder version)it takes you down a completely different path. You can play both players. You battle the same bosses, but your interactions with people are different and your clues are different and your 'IDs' (ie, the animals you fight with are different) thus your strategy on how to beat the bosses are different. As there is alway two sides to a story, one character follows one side and the other character follows the other side. I am only on the 3rd chapter out of five. At this point the characters have choosen sides and are at cross roads with each other. In the beginning they started out helping each other. Anyway, this has been a unique and fun game so far.

Absolutely Stunning!!!

Graphics are superb, CG's are excellent. Watch a pic, it just looks awesome.
Controls are easy and responsive, you'll need to use six axis motions to capture folk after its `beaten', tutorial/demo provided in-game for ease of use.
Sound is excellent, really brings a fantasy, creepy, horror feeling to life. Don't worry its not scary, horror, nightmare giving music, actually makes the game feel like a tim burton movie. Wonder if he had a hand in this?
Story is wonderful. You play as 2 characters each trying to solve the mystery of Doolin but for different reasons. They both tackle the mystery from different angles so its not really repetitive. Characters are well developed and intriguing just like the story.
Takes an average of about 12 hours to beat. It's a great game.

Great graphics but....

This game is beautiful but I find the walking around and fighting things for 2 hours without much purpose is boring and only 10% so far has voiceover work while the other 90% is reading in comic book style. I feel that this is nextgen not ps1 and there is no excuse for this kind of shortcutting on a $60 dollar game don't let the term RPG fool you this is single party hack and slash with magic instead of a sword.

Stunning visuals!

The visuals in this game are stunning. It makes you to pause the gameplay for a while and admire the environment. The gameplay itself is a bit slow paced, but it depends on whether you want to release all the karmas or whether you want to collect all the special items. It's a neat game with very smooth graphics. I played it on an HDTV capable of giving maximum output. The storyline itself may seem somewhat boring. The enemies are not hard to beat, but they tend to be repetitive.

Overall, if you want a lot of hours of gameplay, want to see awesome visuals, excellent music, and a cool game, this is for you. Slasher fans will not like this game. The replay value is also more because you can play the game with multiple characters. A good game to show-off your PS3 to your friends. I found this game to have a lot of similarities with the Final Fantasy series in which you defeat the enemies using magic powers, attacks, and the like.

It's a slow game, but gets addictive as you go along. Definitely a must buy for the PS3.

It's No Final Fantasy

I was expecting more of this game. Like one of the other reviewers mentions there is about 90% of the story presented in a kind of comic book style in the cut scenes, which is really disappointing for a PS3 game. Were they too cheap to animate and hire voice actors for all the cut scenes?? I did play the game through to the end (hence the 3 stars), so I got my money's worth from it but I won't ever play it again. If you are a RPG player then I think you will find this game a little weak. It's no where near the standard of a Final Fantasy game (not even close)!

I bought this because it looked really good. And that it does. The graphics and visuals are amazing, as is the general concept; a doorway into parallel universes with various, interesting new species. That's where the fun ended for me.

While my husband enjoyed this game, I found it to be annoyingly redundant. He kind of likes redundant stuff, I loathe it. It seemed like you just had to do the same thing over and over.

The plot itself was okay, but could have been better. But overall, this is better left to the kiddies, and I wouldn't recommend it for the avid roleplayer.
