What Child Is This?

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 4 / 6
Date: January 24, 2008

This is the second game to occupy my brand new 80G PS3, but the first I'm going to review. For the most part this is because I now have a better idea which problems were part of the first game and which problems were really due to the PS3. Happily the PS3 and Folklore got along wonderfully and since Folklore is now fresher in my mind it gets to go first.

Folklore has an unusual story line. Ellen, a young woman receives a note from her mother requesting that she come to the village of Doolin - since Ellen was raised as an orphan this is a bit of a surprise. And elsewhere, Keats, a writer for an occult magazine receives a call from the same village - from a woman who fears for her life. Both arrive only to witness the aftermath of a murder that recalls three deaths from 17 years ago and presages even more fatalities to come. Ellen searches for clues to her past with the help of Keats and the find entry to the Netherworld - a fairy world of many dimensions. It is in the Netherworld where they find help and hindrance as they battle their separate but intertwined routes through a galaxy of strange creatures.

All that sounds complicated and, to some degree it is. But Folklore is really a mission based RPG where the player fights various creatures, absorbs their 'ID's and then uses the absorbed creatures in more battles, where you absorb more IDs, etc., etc. Various tasks allow you to develop the creatures until both Ellen and Keats have a large menagerie of weapons. Killing some of the creatures, and all the mission end bosses involve combinations of IDs, which keeps fighting from being a complete hack and slash fest. All of this is very well animated, but keep in mind that, while there is some variation between Ellen and Keats creature collections there is a lot of repetition. This is perhaps Folklore's worst flaw, and it's by no means a show-stopper. This is an interesting game to play, regardless.

The artwork is excellent, done in a watercolor style that sets Folklore apart. The game uses a combination of full animation (in battle and some set scenes) and shifting illustrations much like a comic book. Sometimes conversations are voiced and sometimes people use balloon speak. Somehow this all works together seamlessly and the effect is quite memorable. As I said, this is an unusual game in many ways. If you would like a good battle oriented fantasy RPG with a solid plot, Folklore should be high on your list. Expect 40 to 80 hours of gameplay depending on how much effort you put into ID building.

Folklore is indisputably a fun game to play. My only complaint is that with the somber and minimalistic music in the background, the title could have really benefited from voicing over all of the speech sequences. I love the artistic presentation and the "comic-book style" with which the story is presented - but without either stronger music or more voices I find it difficult to get wrapped into the story. It's no Hemingway after all... I think video games are an excellent medium for telling stories, so it disappointed me to see this game not use all of the multimedia a game can offer to tell its story. It's still one I'd say you would want in your gaming library... just don't plan on beating it in one or two sittings - the endless reams of text with no emotional involvement will quickly put you to sleep.

Not Quite What I Expected

When the demo for Folklore became available for download a couple of months ago, I was quick to get it. I thought the demo was a LOT of fun, but the only thing I didn't like was all the text bubbles instead of actual voice acting. I knew this game had been created in Japan, so I thought that when the game came to the U.S. the text bubbles would be replaced with voice acting. This game is a lot of fun to play, but be warned that there is a LOT of text to read. Sometimes the text screens go on and on and on. I really think this slows the game down, and really got on my nerves after awhile. You may want to rent this before buying.

fun but weird

i have to say that this is a fun game and if your looking to waste a few hours and still become enthralled in a story, then this might be the game for you. my only complaint is the battle system its a bit weird and almost like a hack and slach with a couple tactics thrown in. being a fan of turn base i havent found a really really good rpg since dragon quest 8 so dont let me deter you.

Pan's Labyrinth meets Kingdom Hearts meets Pokemon...

...or at least, that's how I tried to describe it to people. The setting and feel of it are similar to Pan's Labyrinth, where the real world is cold and uninviting and the fairy world, even if it is a fairy world, is oftentimes even more dark, but still magical. Throw in KH and Pokemon for gameplay: KH for the more Action RPG style and Pokemon for the collecting folk and using their abilities. And then finally, throw in just some good, old-fashioned murder mystery and you've got Folklore. I played the demos of this game and was hooked and I wasn't disappointed at all. I just hope other people enjoy it as much as I do.

Well............

So I got this game the day it came out. The game starts out slow. Not much of a "wow" factor when it begins. Once the game progresses you get the ability to absorb the spirit of your fallen foe. Once that is done you are able to use its ability. From what I played so far, you get to upgrade those abilities. The awesome thing about this game is pulling the spirit off your foe's body. You actually pull back on the SIXAXIS controller just like if you were fishing. The bigger enemies are tricky because you have to time the pulling of thier spirits. Folklore is an okay game I guess, it's not really for everyone.

A corridor shooter not an RPG or Adventure Game

Other than the fact that it's not a FPS, it's still a corridor shooter. Folklore is old-school with better graphics, fun, pretty, but don't expect much repeat playing.

The game centers around two characters trying to figure out why a woman jumped off a cliff, one a reporter, another thought it was her mother. The mystery is not yours to solve, as you compelete each level in the game the story plays out, but that's annoying. There's little voice work and almost no animated cut scenes. This is not bad, but the cut scenes look like comic books, you read the bubbles. It's boring, tedious and pointless. The story and the adventure don't matter to eachother. See, all you do is walk through each level / area and fight until you destroy the main monster guy at the end. Then you take the other character and complete the same, exact area. Then you talk to everyone to update the story and go to the next area. Not much of an adventure, certainly not an RPG, more like, Halo.

Now, there's some nifty gimics. There are no weapons. When you kill you take a soul, you assign that soul to a button and use that monster as a weapon. There's a hundred monsters, (according to the box) so I'm presuming there's as many weapons. The boss-battles are very Zelda-ish in style. A large monster in teh middle of the screen, a speacial combiniation of things to kill it. This is okay, but borrowed and familular.

You can fight and power-up, boring, but usefull -- in that way it's like an RPG, and only in that way.

Folklore is fun, but painfully simple, it's beautiful, but pointless. Like sugar, it taste good, but it's all empty calories.

Not Bad, inventive, original, but lack luster.

Well, This game is pretty fun but doesn't do well in keeping me attached much less holding my attention for too long. But it is a pretty cool game. The gameplay is original and is fairly enjoyable but a bit slow at times. If you're a person who's into RPGs this game will seem like it takes forever to get to the meat of the story. I've been playing for months and i didn't take interest in the story until it came close to the end. Graphically it's also not bad. I'm very impressed by the presentation and the originality of the characters in the game, there has even been an instance which a contest winner had his character design put in the game. If you're like me, you'll probably notice this game had a lot of shift-of-focus in the story even for an RPG. None-the less, over all this game is not that great but also not bad.

Fun though often repetitive

I played the demo before buying this game and was impressed by the ambiance created by the graphics and outstanding sound. The full game, however, was somewhat disappointing. The levels are chopped down to bite-size rooms reminiscent of games made during the Pentium 2 generation and loading times are rather long even with the optional HD installation. The camera works well more often than not, but not always. The storyline is confusing, predictable and no too enthralling. I found the highlight to be the combat system and the use of the sixaxis motion sensor (this is the only PS3 game I have where it didn't feel tacked on).
