Flawed But Excellent

Like many games in the "Backyard" series this is very enjoyable but flawed. The main problem is the stats. The list of top ten players doesn't track blocks. Rebounding is so difficult that your team and players will never appear in the top ten. The end-of-season awards for top player on team and in the league don't work at all. And please see the reviewer below, of all the Backyard games, this appears to require the most computer power. If your computer is not very powerful, the game will play in slow motion--very frustrating. Finally, there are only two pro players; hopefully, future versions will include more.

There are many positive points that we've come to expect from manufacturer "Humongous Entertainment," including trick plays, offensive and defensive strategies (Offense: Crash, Normal, or Fastbreak; Defense: Tight, Normal, or Loose), decisions about which players to pick and at what positions, when to sub, etc. Except for the lack of rebounding and outside shooting (especially in the most difficult level), game play is fairly realistic.

My player recommendations include the always-speedy Pete Wheeler, defensive specialist and inside shooter Keisha Phillips, all-around threat Lisa Leslie, Reese Worthington (great ball-handling and speed)and outside shooters Kenny Kawaguchi and Pablo Sanchez. Our current team features Pete, Lisa, Reese, and two players whose skill distribution and build are determined by the player. The skill points of these latter players increase after one season; they become among your very best players. The game requires quick responses; I recommend it for older grade school kids (maybe around 3rd through sixth grades) and adults who enjoy this series of sports games. Others may enjoy the somewhat easier-to-play Backyard Baseball or Football.

I bought this for my 10-year old nephew Ryan and he loves it. The first time he played it for 4 hours non-stop, I had to beg him to get away from the computer to eat. I also recommend Backyard Soccer and Backyard Football, he also likes those alot.

I don't have the Backyard Basketball yet, but my 5 year old son has the soccer, baseball and football versions. He loves them and they weren't difficult for him to figure out. The software allows him to add more difficulty to the way he plays it as he gets older and understands more about the way real sports games are played. It keeps him entertained and thinking for a long time, which is a good sign in children's software.

It was almost better than backyard baseball

This is easily the best backyard game. I've been playing the backyard games since the original Backyard Baseball! So I know. Pete Wheeler is funnier than ever (I still get a kick out of him everytime he says "One Time It Rained.") Dmitri Petrovich finally found a sport he rules at (Pick him, He can shoot a three pointer from anywere). And its easy to win! IT RULES ON THIN ICE!

My oldest son has been playing baseball every since his little hands could hold a bat. If you ask him what he wants to be when he grows up, his answer is always "a baseball player" so it was no surprise to me that when he saw the software for Backyard Baseball that he would want to buy it.

As much as I LOVE baseball myself, I really had no interest in learning the video game. After time however, I found myself asking questions and coming to an understanding that there was more to meet the eye than just your average virtual baseball game.

The first concept about this game that is really cute is there are 2 different stages and different levels. You can play t-ball or your standard little league baseball game. I thought that was a great addition to have both versions in one game because my little one can play this game as well and understand the concept since he too is in the t-ball league.

The second thing about this that makes it appealing to children is the different baseball fields the games take place in. Sometimes it's your typical baseball field, other times they're playing in a make shift baseball field out in a lot, a school baseball diamond, there are several and they're all very unique.

The third thing that I personally like is the kids that are in the game that play the baseball players are all racially diverse. There is even a player who is in a wheelchair but has one heck of a throwing arm! ;)

My husband really likes the fact that the game allows you to not only PLAY the game, but to also be the coach of the teams you select. Your child will actually pick the players on your team based on the players stats, and create a play list. You have a baseball schedule and everything and my son printed his out and played the games according the schedule like any other baseball game. His learning knowledge of how a team is put together was taught in a way we never could have explained.

After you play your team scheduled games, there is a little league series complete with a trophy for your child to print out!

I strongly recommend this game for every little baseball player or baseball player to be. My God-daughter also has this game and she loves it, so it's not just for boys. So give this one a try, I can guarantee you'll score a homerun for the person you buy this for!!! ;)
