I can't see why the average rating (at the time of writing) is 2.5/5 stars.
I found this to be an excellent game, very similar to Need For Speed: Most Wanted, but less linear, and less time spent in police chases (which is great).
Lots of awesome cars to choose from, tons of great races, even decent cutscenes. Also, no problems installing or running it, and I did it on my XP-Mac, which is highly unstable, so that says a lot.
This is just a great game.
coulda been better... much

OK, so the game was definitely a step down from previous games. I agree that the police pursuits provided no adrenaline rush/intensity to the game at all. I'd have to say Hot Pursuit 2 was much better in that category. The racing aspect was nothing to gloat over, very similar to the previous games. For everything the game was supposed to have over previous games in the NFS series, I can't really say I was overly impressed. For all the variety it claimed to have it seemed very restrictive compared to Underground 1 + 2. I can't compare it to Most Wanted as I have yet to get it. The other thing I hold against this game, which could just be a personal issue with my laptop although it was brand new, was that when I got to a certain point in the game it would say that it stopped working (the game) and closed itself. I have yet to experience that problem with any other game/application that has been installed on it so I'm assuming it's a game issue but that aside I'm not overly excited by the features that were included in this game.

Great graphics, lots of action. Customization of cars endless. All around high end game. Only think i wasn't aware of is that it all takes place at night. In which after i've been playing the game i realize thats what this version is all about.

I hadn't played a computer racing game since POD of Ubisoft came out in 1997. I ran it on a 12 megabyte Voodoo 2, and anyone who knows what I'm talking about knows that any racing game to come has a lot to live up to. I was looking for a POD replacement, something futuristic like it was. Not a today-car in the cities of today driving "simulator." Sterile word, simulator--I wanted an experience. Then I realized I was in an electronics store in the year 2008. Look around, people talking on picture phones! It is the future. Need for Speed would probably deliver after all. I'd recommend a good graphics card, and doing some Googling on widescreen support, if it applies to you. The graphics are pretty fantastic, and the feel of the speeds you reach, heart-pounding. Little things like motion blur, broken windows, exhaust flames, skid marks, sparks flying, overheating--everything short of running out of gas are covered. As well as this, each car handles differently, if not accurately to its make, which I cannot say, because I would not know; wish I did. Cars are customizable, if that's giving a spoiler... Ha ha! I haven't yet played the game. Well, I've raced on a variety of tracks with several cars, but there's a plot to be reckoned with eventually. I'm practicing up on my power slides. It's pretty easy to crash and fall behind, but I really enjoy the focus driving well gives. I find myself leaning into the monitor and more poised over the keyboard. In my part of the United States, there is what's called "black ice" covering most of the roadways, at the moment. I'd be driving like an idiot out there, too. If Mario Cart is what you like, then disagree with me, here. But, I wouldn't be writing this if I, an experienced gamer, wasn't very much taken by the game. And, if there's one thing I hate seeing in driving games it's having to operate a gun at the same time. No guns in the game, in case that's a selling point for anyone else. There's this silly public service message about safe driving in the intro that's entertaining, too.
Awesome game......can't stop playing it

This game kept my attention, but that is about all I can say. The driving is quite unrealistic. The Audi R8 is faster than a Koenigsegg, and a dump truck has a quicker acceleration than a Porsche Carrera GT. The last boss race was so incredibly difficult that I had to play it on the highest resolution and best quality, slowing my laptop down so much that I could play the game frame by frame. If you are a NFS fan, then go ahead and get it, but I think I am a Test Drive Unlimited fan, and this did not satisfy my needs.
