"The White Wolf of Icicle Creek" is Her Interactive's best game yet. Being an avid Nancy Drew gamer, I've played more than half of the 16 games so far. For seven games in a row, I'd already had a favorite one. But this beats it by far.

Some of the recent Nancy Drew games have been short, which was a big concern of mine when I bought this. The thing is, I finished this game in two sittings. But those were two very, very long sittings. It will probably take you three days, tops, if you're new to the game. It took me two.

The plot was great. Nancy Drew came to the lodge to learn about guests' accidents. There was a lone wolf roaming around that seemed to appear whenever something bad happened.

I also liked the characters. The caretaker, Ollie, reminded me of two characters from two other Nancy Drew games (If you have played Treasure in the Royal Tower and Secret of Shadow Ranch, you'll know almost IMMEDIATELY of who I'm thinking of.) Some of the characters were very dull and I never thought about them except when I was talking to them. Others were very detailed and interesting, however. Most of them were phone contacts only, but it still amused me to talk to them.

In comparison to ALL of the previous games, the graphics of this were the best. The best. There were times, especially when walking around and seeing the wolf, when my mouth actually dropped open because of the beauty.

There are some things, however, that I didn't enjoy about the game:

Most of the action could only happen between 7 AM and 5 PM, because other than that, the sun was down. Because it was the winter, hypothermia and staying warm were big factors in the game. Nancy would not go outside if it was after 5 PM or before 7 AM. There was some events that happened in the lodge, yes, but too many times I went and set the alarm clock to progress later on.

There were a lot of actionless parts, where I was walking around and around, wasting time or looking for something that would deepen the plot. The in-game hints were, for the most part were very unhelpful. Tino Balducci (the person that Nancy had to consult for advice) either gave advice that everyone would know or didn't give advice to the current problem at all. For instance, in a previous game, I was walking around with nothing to do. When I called for a hint, they suggested that I do an action (take a break, maybe use the elevator. .) which then triggered the next step in the game. I had to walk around blindly and hope I ran into something in order for the game to progress.

Overall, though, the negative aspects make only a tiny dent in the game. In fact, I still give it at 10/10. Although I JUST finished the game, I just might go back and start it over. I haven't done that with a Nancy Drew game in awhile.

If you enjoy Nancy Drew games, or games with a similar style, you will love it. If you loved to be scared at every moment, you might start to become off guard and relaxed because there is little constant danger. And when that moment arrives, the moment when you've let down your guard, BAM! You'll find yourself with your back against the chair, laughing sheepishly for screaming outloud.

Get this game. It's worth more than it costs, which is something you can't say about a lot of games.

Careful! This game won't work on older computers. No returns.

This is probably a very good game, but I wouldn't know it because . . .

while all the other Nancy Drew games work fine on my computer, this one won't play. It turns out that I have the wrong kind of driver. One of my computers won't do anything; the other one has a totally scrambled picture. I can't return the game since it's opened (except for the exact same game, which won't help).

You should check the tech support page of herinteractive.com (Post titled "Driver Card" ) and follow the instructions to see if it will work on your computer before you buy it. Considering that I just threw $18 down the toilet, I thought I would warn others who don't have the newest computer. For me, the game stinks.

I hope you can get the game to work on your computer. It looks like fun.

I anxiously await the arrival of each new game. White Wolf was entertaining and somewhat challenging. Much better than Kapu Cave. I can always count on Her Interactive to keep me entertained.

Great game!

I own all but one of the previous Nancy Drew games, and I love this one just as much as the others. In fact, I think it may be my favorite so far. Having to go back to the lodge to cook meals at set times is kind of annoying, but that also makes the game more realistic, so I can't complain too much. Besides that, I found that after a while I was able to cook the meals much more quickly.

I loved the interaction with the characters, especially the one who helps you get out of a couple dangerous situations and helps you in a lot of other ways too. (You'll have to play the game to find out who I'm talking about!)

Overall, this is a really great game, so I highly recommend it for anyone who loves Nancy Drew games. I noticed that some people gave this game bad reviews on here because they couldn't play it on their computers. I didn't have any trouble with it, but make sure you check the computer requirements before you buy it to make sure it will work on your computer. If you're new to Nancy Drew games or have had trouble figuring them out in the past, I would recommend playing this at the Junior Detective level first, because there are times when things are a bit hard to figure out. But remember that you can always go to the HerInteractive website and find hints on the message board, too. Have fun!

This game is the first in the series, that will NOT work with Older Windows

I have played every Nancy Drew game, until this one, which after buying it, will NOT work on Windows ME. The Her Interactive website basically says that they are no longer supporting any of the Older Windows, only XP and Vista. This is very sad, as I will no longer buy the games. Beware to anyone who expects this one to work, as the rest did.

Now THIS is the Nancy Drew we know and love!

I'm extremely pleased with this game! There was an actual mystery to investigate (unlike Danger by Design. What was the point of that again?), and this game actually made you think without getting really irritated (unlike Creature of Kapu Cave. Frass jars anyone?). I must admit though, the cooking portion of the game was irritating at times, but it WAS necessary to the game. You are undercover as a maid and a cook. This is a realistic game. People won't lie to a maid as much as they will lie to a detective, and that's the point HerInteractive is trying to make. Eventually, you no longer have to make meals, and you can continue your investigation un-interupted. Cooking actually gives you something to do if you're not sure what to do next.
I only had to use online help a couple times, and I probably could have figured out most of it. The story of this game is incredible, and you feel for the characters/wolf. Someone mentioned the ending being too long. I agree that it should have been slightly shorter, but then again if this were a real chase, you might be chasing for hours. There's no way of knowing. It was NOT, however 30 minutes long. It took me about 2 and a half minutes at most. The characters in this game were very amusing, and it was interesting to learn more about them as the game progressed.
There really is no downfall to this game. I will mention that this game was similar to a combination of a couple of other great ND games, Shadow Ranch, Scarlet Hand, Deception Island, Royal Tower, and Blue Moon Canyon but this game has a different story and it is just as classic as the other Nancy Drew games. Also, I am aware that this game will not work on older systems. That is very disappointing to me, because I had a ME and I know how it feels to have a system that won't operate with certain CDs. To these people I sincerely appologize. This game will work with Vista, and XP as well.
Whether you're just starting out with Nancy or an old friend, I highly recommend this game to you!

Very Frustrating!

I love Nancy Drew games, but this one was the worst. During the whole game I thought it was okay, but that snowmobile chase made it the worst game ever. I still have yet to beat it! Plus, it's rather hard to beat it when your computer screen keeps flickering and blinking. I think it was doing that because I have a HP Vista laptop. Even though the game is suppose to run on Vista, it wasn't running properly on mine. Hopefully the next ND games will run better on Vista & will have a better ending than that dumb snowmobile chase.

Not worth the frustration

I have played every Nancy Drew game and was completely irritated by this game. Some of the activities involved no thinking but took an extremely long time to finish while allowing for no quick way to complete. This game takes an extreme amount of patience to the point that it is not even fun anymore. Many of the clues were disjointed and difficult to obtain plausible conclusions. It is by far my least favorite, even liking the Kapu Cave and Danger and Design better even though they were not exactly my favorite either. I am shocked at the number of positive reviews of this game and I am hoping that none of the rest are set up with mind numbing tasks and repetitive errands like this one was.

Beware of Her Interactive

I should preface my remarks by saying that I have not bought nor played this game. However, I have bought every game prior, and the last few have been progressively worse. As many will confirm, the earlier Nancy Drew games were incredible. They were great adventures/mysteries. The last few games -- I thought I would give HI once more chance, but would wind up feeling I had wasted my money. The games were boring, pointless, uninteresting and dumbed down. I think this happened when Dream Catcher parted with their company -- for reasons which are unknown.

The poor quality of the games would not be much to gripe about. Clearly the company needs time to get back on firm footing again and to find its voice and style. They have been "readjusting" for several games now -- all at the expense of customers who shell out hard earned cash only to be disappointed.

My many concern with this company is its poor customer service and lack of integrity. Consider the boards on Her Interactive. Post a negative review on a game -- and you will likely find yourself abused in insulting, condescending terms by Her Interactive's own moderators. They will also ban your account of filter your posts -- allowing themselves to review the posts of anyone who might write something negative or honest -- and deciding for themselves whether they will post your review or not.

To me, this reflects lack of integrity and dishonesty -- and is more than just about protecting market share. If the game is flawed or if people have different opinions, let them speak their minds. What is the point otherwise of a review board? People have their own preferenes -- and may like some games or dislike others for reasons unique to them. The company has an obligation to allow people to discover this for themselves. What is the value of a review board if only positive reviews/reviewers are allowed?

Instead, they try to silence critics. They will even go onto different boards and attack people and intimidate them, and I suspect the snotty comment against Northern Girl for commenting on tech problems was a HI employee. That is exactly the type of conscending and rude comment HI staffers make against anyone who offers anything but glowing praise of a game.

Notice that limited help is given for tech support issues -- and that refunds are not granted for games which are not compatible with one's computer system. HI was negligent in not publishing all of the specs its games require for effective operation -- and incredibly dishonest about not allowing refunds or replacements when games inevitably don't work. They withhold information -- to drum up sales and then refuse to honor refunds when their misleading/withholding information creates problems for their trust patrons.

It's further interesting that once positive reviews came out about ICE on the boards -- the company site put a link to the reviews on its front page. Then, as soon as people began complaining about tech issues, poor quality of games, and other matters -- suddenly the message board is "updating" and ensuring that no more posts will be allowed -- or will "accidentally" be erased until this process is complete (How ironic this is happening after the release of the game and peak selling period!). When I saw that, I rolled my eyes and thought "yeah, right, 'updating'." That's exactly how cynical I am about HI.

While I have always enjoyed Nancy Drew games -- minus the few most recent releases, I told myself I would take a wait and see approach for this last game. If the reviews were stellar, I'd try it out and give HI one more chance. A few were -- but then more are coming out about HI's tech problems, poor public relations, that the game freezes in portions -- or that it is so poorly set up that people are erasing over old games by accident and having to start again, or that the clues are presented as such that no one can determine who the culprit is until the end. What is that about? Shouldn't the player be able to discern who the culprit is based on evidenec and their own ingenuity? Instead the game engages in an elaborate shell game/smoke and mirrors, throwing in misleading clues, etc. so you can't determine anything until it happens at the end. Others have had problems with the final scene -- in some cases, a chase which runs into hours -- due to technical glitches...or games which simply never end.

Her Interactive is just a vast wasteland now as far as I am concerned. I wont' buy this game, even if there are some amusing/interesting parts, as there are just too many problems with the games. While some of these could be overlooked, the company's poor treatment of its patrons does not inspire my loyalty or concern. In fact, it does quite the opposite.

Cannot rate...doesn't work on my computer

I have never had a problem with any of the other Nancy Drew Mystery games (I own them all) except for this one. I can load the game unto my computer, hear voices and sound effects, see some text at the bottom of the screen, but everything else remains black. No video. I am VERY disappointed.
