Worth a look for longtime fans

3 Rating: 3, Useful: 8 / 9

Chances are that if you are a long time gamer, you'd have heard of the Raiden series. A scrolling shoot 'em up kind of like the classic Capcom arcade shooter 1942, the Raiden games have always offered simplistic fun, and Raiden 3 is no different. Raiden 3 doesn't really do much to change up the gameplay elements of the series, and for new fans it is easily accessible. The game is pretty challenging, and the two-player co-op mode is undoubtedly the best way to play the game. However, the generic gameplay can get boring really quickly, and there really isn't much here in terms of replay value or total game length either. Not to mention that there is basically nothing here that you haven't seen before in other games in the Raiden series, or other scrolling shooter games before or after it either. All that being said, Raiden 3 isn't a bad game one bit, and it's definitely worth a look for longtime fans of the series or genre, but there's just not enough here to warrant any more than just a quick checking out.

Review of Raiden III for PS2

If you grew up playing the Raiden series in the early 90s (1990 - 1995) while in high school or college, then this is a must have. It's a beautiful 3D rendition of the original arcade. When I say 3D, I don't mean games like Rogue Warrior, War Hawk, etc. This version of Raiden still maintains the spirit of a 2d vertical side scroller shooter, but the background is rendered in 3D, instead of the traditional static sprite blitting that happens with the original arcade. But then again, the original arcade hardware was using dual 8MHz - 16MHz 6800 processors, while the PS2 is using multiple RS4000 RISCS based processors with a Vertex Emotion engine core. You get the picture...
A nice to have for this would have been the inclusion some of the original Raiden arcade series like FX and DX. But alas it does not have it, unless it was included as special easter rabbit and you need some secret code to get at it.
Anyways buy this if you liked the original arcade Raiden series. You should probably get this is you enjoy vertical side scroller shooters even if you have never played Raiden. Think R-Type, rotated 90 degrees counter clockwise, and you can image what a vertical side scroller is.

Chow baby.

Disgraceful To It's Name

Raiden 3? Sorry, but this game needs to change its name to something else. Raiden is much more than this. For you raiden lovers out there that have enjoyed raiden since the beginning, this one is a big let down in my opinion.

I bought it for $6.50 total including shipping and was very anxious to get it and try it out. To my dismay, after playing it a mere hour, I was bored out of my mind, to the point where I don't even want to play it anymore. So what is it lacking? EVERYTHING THAT MADE RAIDEN...RAIDEN.

1. What happened to the plasma gun?!?!? That was my favorite type of gun ever. It was awesome to look at especially when it curves and twirls itself around the screen zapping ur enemies to oblivion! Now you're stuck with 3 types of main weapons...a laser that can move only left and right, one that can't, and the default vulcan shot aka spread shot.

Notes to the ppl that made this: If you can't do something right don't do it at all, all you've done is disgrace the RAIDEN name. Like Disney trying to make part 2s and 3s for their classic disney movies. If you are a TRUE raiden fan, you'd understand.

2. We all know its a 2D plane shooter, but Raiden was much more. Raiden 3 lacked the suspense and the awesome feel of things blowing up. Everything felt dry and lacking. In older versions, when the masters came in, you KNEW they were the masters because of how suspenseful it became and how everything was set up. Now, they just zoom in just like any other fighter and the only thing that makes you realize that they are the masters is because there's more bullets coming out from them and they last longer. Fighting the masters isn't fun anymore.

3. I hope the makers realize that game designing/graphics has far improved itself. If they were going to release raiden 3 on PS2, at least utilize its full potential better. Raiden 3 does not deserve to be on the ps2 because it doesn't even need a ps2 to run the kind of graphics that it has.

4. Ever heard of trying to be unique? I know the developers wanted to stay with raiden, but not only did they fail in that, they didn't add anything new to it. Sure the 3d envorinment was nice, but the game play is MUCH MUCH MORE IMPORTANT. Give us some more DIFFERENT types of weapons to play with? Some more enemies to destroy? What raiden lacks is strategy because most of the enemies you just shoot and no matter what angle you shoot them, you'll get them. Huge potential, but unfortunately it died at the hands of a bunch of ppl that don't really know what Raiden is really about. At LEAST make the weapons look a lot cooler, not just sort of cooler.

If you bought this game for anymore than $10...I think you got ripped off. I bought it for $6.50 and I felt like getting ripped off.

The makers concentrated on the wrong aspects of the game. It's like TRANSFORMERS. The graphics were sure awesome but the acting was horrific. Oh well, ppl are sure gullible. If doomsday comes, I would say "good riddens".

aaah the good ol' days.
