There's a lot of hype surrounding the Resident Evil series of games. They're on most systems, there are books, and even a movie. The story is a good one, but I found the game to not be so great. Graphics are alright, the sound is bad though. And game play is horrible. Trying to move around is difficult and can be confusing, especially when you're under attack and things are chaotic. The characters move unlike most games. You don't go in the direction of the D-pad, rather you turn with right and left direction and move with a button. It was poorly designed. But since the Playstation 2 is out, and better games as well as more Resident Evil, there's no reason to pick up this game anymore. The 2-disc set here is one adventure with a male character and another with a female. The game is involved, just not as much fun as it shoud be

A solid sequel but sort of betrays the tone of the franchise

The premise of the Resident Evil franchise has always been fairly straight-forward: you assume the role of a woefully unequipped character thrown into a location infested with flesh-eating zombies and other assorted baddies in an escape mission from the depths of Hell. It is the subject of B-rated horror flicks and the series delivers in predictable fashion. Resident Evil is a game that people will either love or love to hate. I'm part of the former so my review will be slightly biased--I thought the game was really cool and addictive but the following points are why I could only give it 3 stars.

Following a brief opening sequence where you wander through the back alleys of Raccoon City, fending off one zombie horde after another, you enter into the seemingly safe refuge of an historic police station. This huge labyrinthine complex is reminiscent of the original mansion that mesmerized gamers in RE1. Inside, are the same puzzles that abounded in RE1. Some are genuinely unique, but most are overly simple and quite often out of place. Much of the first half of the game involves tedious errand running--a point further confounded by the RE inventory management system (i.e. magic box). At first, when the complex is filled with the walking undead, the idea of moving about is rather frightening. But once you start cleaning the place out, it gets rather boring, esp. when you have to watch another cut scene of the same old door. The fact of the matter is, unlike the original RE where everything seemed justified within the context of a haunted mansion, much of the ambience in the RPD building seems out of place (two locations I should mention are the precinct library and the art hallway that leads to the rear east exit). Although there is one surprise in the game that could justify the interior design of the venue, I feel that the forced attempt to make a gothic police building ruined what could have been a genuinely creepy gaming experience.

Once you're freed from the RPD building you make your way out through the sewers. Depending on which storyline you pick (Leon or Claire) you will swap characters with different people you encounter in the game. Claire's story is the only story that is directly related to the original RE so I will focus on her half. Regardless of the game you play, once you beat the scenario you can switch disks and see the game through the eyes of the other character. It is in the second part of the story that things started going off on a tangent.

In Claire's story you will enlist the help of a young girl, Sherry Birkin, daughter of an Umbrella scientist William Birkin. Birkin is the creator of the G-Virus, superior in every way to the T-Virus. There are sequences in which Sherry will follow you through the Raccoon City sewers. The experience is truly awesome but I couldn't help feeling that you weren't playing Resident Evil anymore so much as you were playing Aliens with Ripley at the helm. Even the nature of the G-Virus mutants resembles face-huggers and xenomorphs more than the humanoid or reptilian creatures we have come to expect. This futuristic vibe is exacerbated later on when you get to the game's final area: a top-secret Umbrella Lab. Again, you're not in Kansas anymore. Some gamers might like the new direction, however, I couldn't help but feel the departure was too stylistically out of sync with the RE concept. Thankfully, RE3: Nemesis returns us to the genre's origins.

Overall, the game is a solid sequel with better videos (gone are the corny live-action videos) and better voice acting. Graphically, quality is not very much improved and the sound quality is also the same caliber. Game play is exactly the same; the camera angles, thankfully, are not as annoying as the original but still make running around to new areas rather creepy. The only modification to the combat system is that Claire or Leon will actually limp as their injuries get more severe. The bottom line: Resident Evil 2 is a fun game but for veterans of the original, it will seem very abrupt and will leave players feeling like they want something more (I beat it the first time with Claire in 5 hours at one sitting).

Not so much fun after awhile.

I loved this game when i first played it. It has many puzzles and frustrating stuff that you have to get away from because of how hard they are. It took me 10 hours to beat the game just because the puzzle solving is very hard on normal mode. You can play an arrange game where you have unlimited ammo for a sub machine gun which is cheating but is part of the game when you first turn it on. This game is fun and challanging the first few plays with whatever character, (You can be Claire Redfield or Leon Kennedy.) but it will be a bore when you finish it.

Overhyped

There's a significant graphical overhaul since episode 1, but this fails to improve on or even to equal the original in any other respect. As a game in its own right, its pretty entertaining, if slightly short, but as a sequel to one of the most innovative and ingenious games of all time, its a disappointment of the highest order.

Highly Addicting Horror Game

Is it a movie or a video game? Try both and they suceed fairly well. So well, that it will keep you in front of the TV screen for hours on end, trying to reach the end. Breaks will be brief, only as long as it takes the paramedics to restart your heart after a particularly terrifying scene.

The opening computer generated opening is well done and tense, creating an atmosphere of horror as the dead literally rise up to attack you. Hollywood should take note. From there music, camera angles, and surprise manipulate the player as do cinematic cut scenes that allow you to know the character you play and care what occurs to them.

With only a thin sheen of realism (would there really be such strange puzzles?) the game involves the players in a storyline that is told through his or her actions, cut scenes, and printed information. The pacing is tense with surprises all abound right up to the ending.

What makes this game work so well is its attempt at depth. Not only can you play as two different characters with somewhat different storylines, beating these games open up alternative versions or "B" games. These B games are even better as you are stalked by a mysterious and indestructible Mr. X. Never knowing when he may appear allows you to replay the game again (with some differences) and not get bored.

All told, the game is highly satisfying. Though there are minor quibbles with inventory (a discard command to set down an item would work SO well) and a too difficult final battle in the B game, they do not detract from the game. Told as a movie, with moving scenes, it sets a new standard for gaming excellence.

It takes some time to get used to the coltrols but once you do you are treated to hours of gaming enjoyment. The story will engulf you, the suspence will startle you and when you finish the first disc you get to play again on disc two with just enough changes to keep the game intresting. You may actually enjoy the second disc more than the first because you will be used to the environment. If you are not an experienced gamer it would be a good idea to pick up a game guide to help you out along the way. Overall Resident Evil 2 may be the best adult/older teen game for playstation.

It may be almost 2 years old,but it is still the king of all horrore games out there."Silent Hill"......It ain't nothen."Doom".....This game looks like Barney compared to RE2.You will have to (not easily )battle through all kinds of mutants, like Rabid Rotweillers, gut wrenching zombies, gaint Tarantulas and even Evil little crows who peck you're eyes out.No one said it would be easy, but you do have a full inventory of huge fire-power.You will blast away the Evil around you useing powerful(but very fun)weapons like A cross-Bow,Grenade Launchers,Sub-machine Guns ,and many more enjoyable differant ways to splatter those pesty monstars. Two Words GET IT if you dont have a Playstation, then get the N64 version.Just take my advice,OK.

It's gross, it's gory, it's scary, it's GREAT!

This was a really good game. I can honestly say that it was one of the best games I have ever played. The best parts about this game were - the zombies were realistic the main monsters (William and Mr. X)were awesome! The weapons were outstanding!

The only part that turned me off was the fact that you don't get a lot of space in your inventory to carry a lot of items. All I can say is that this game is a "must have" for people who don't have it yet! You won't regret it, I promise!

OK. It may lack overall spookiness, and the city doesn't seem as maze-like as the mansion in the first one, but man, it still rocks. Graphics have been pumped up, and the background scenes are simply superb. The FMV is amazing too. The new weapons and characters are also great. Thankfully, they improved the voice acting, and the characters conversations are more beliveable. The zombies are still blood-chilling, and they look different. Some are cops, S.T.A.R.S. troops, and civilians(well, they were, anyway). The best part is the way you have to beat the game using one character, save it, then use that saved file for the other character to get the whole story. Nifty! Anyway, if you liked R.E., buy this. If the first 10 seconds of the intro film doesn't grab you, maybe you are a zombie yourself.
