But I loved it. The mob, the Yakuza, Mexican drug dealers, crooked cops, and Rastafarians all want your help, and you can't say no. Drive cars off bridges, watch the cops shoot pedestrians, and finally see the guy you've been working for when you complete the mission. Of course, parents of little kids will hate the game for all its worth, but they hate anything with violence or cussing. As for me, I see nothing offensive about the game. After a while you curse back at the computer when it curses you. But I can't give it five stars because of a few drawbacks. At times, all the cars dissapear when you are not done yet, forcing you to turn the game off. And once you beat it, you don't truly have a reason to play it again soon. And no death metal was included in the music track, which made it a little boring. But if you want months of entertainment, have no problem with grituitous violence and pointless swearing(you really should not, it's just a game), and want lush, vivid colors, get this. Just don't think it will last forever.
Givin' props to old school gaming!

Grand Theft Auto is road rage come alive. In this game, you can do everything you've ever wanted to do to that a*hole that cut you off, drove too slow, or pissed you off in some way. Well, not quite everything. I still haven't found a way to give people the finger.
What you can do is ram people from behind, pull people out of their cars and beat them up, steal their cars, run red lights, drive on the wrong side of the road, run over pedestrians on sidewalks, shoot people, run from cops and more! On top of that, there are missions throughout the city that you get to carry out for the mob. Running drugs, "whacking" the boss' enemies, blowing up police stations, and driving getaway cars: it's like The Sopranos for PlayStation.
There are many of those who have already played Grand Theft Auto 3 that say that the graphics or "too primitive" or that they "suck". Personally, I'm an old school gamer and my interest is less in flashy graphics and more in exciting and challenging gameplay. Some of the best games have very simple graphics: Galaga, Ms. PacMan, Ninja Gaiden, Shadow Dancer, and Rolling Thunder to name a few. It's the gameplay that makes or breaks the game, not the graphics.
That said, the gameplay in Grand Theft Auto is absolutely brilliant. In this age of boring, senseless games with "dazzling" 3D graphics and not an once of intrigue, it's a breath of fresh air to find a game whose creators had making a great game in mind rather than mind-numbing graphics. Rather than being a negative, Grand Theft Auto's graphics contribute to its being a throwback to the "good old days" of gaming.
Of course there's also the violence aspect of the game that many people take issue with. There's no doubt that this game is very violent. However, in terms of graphic violence, I don't think it is much more violent than other games that have been released before it or games that have come after. I think the real concern stems from the types of violence that the player is allowed to commit, namely crimes against innocents and cops. The idea is that since the player is rewarded points for these crimes, the game reinforces anti-social behaviour. Personally, I think that if someone has been so devalued in life that his life is influenced by video game points, then there are much larger issues at play than the actual video game. Most rational people can tell the difference between reality and fiction. People who cannot should not be playing video games.
All in all, Grand Theft Auto is hours and hours of guilt-free, reckless endangerment!

I just wanna review out something no ones said yet.
If you still ever play this game, it is a great game, it's 5 stars, provided your into this sort of thing.
But recently when i played the playstation version, i noticed they jibbed out and didnt include certain things that the PC version and better version had.
First off - There is no train. The PC version has a fully working train that you can hijack and even put into reverse.. sure, it may be useless to crash into another train, but it was entertaining. The PS version doesnt have a train.. but yet, it has the tracks for it, so go figure that one out.
Next, lack of vehicles. The PC version doesnt have spots where cars just disapeer and it feels like your walking around a ghost town.
And something no one can say wouldnt be better... you can edit the PC version, not only can you put whatever car you want into the game by downloading a simple quick device them importing a car you can download or make yourself, but you can also change everything in the game with simmilar tools. You can not just add cars, you can add missions, put more cars into things, edit the exsisting map, or hell, make your own city from scratch.
When I play this game, i like to ride around in Knight Rider, or maybe the General Lee, try and eulude cops driving lambourghinis... gouranga!
Convinced the PC versions better? Makes you feel like the PSX you played was lacking, huh?
extremely fun and addictive!!!!!!!

This game was extremely addictive. I was surprised at how HOOKED you get into the game. I could see why Newsweek mentioned it a lot when it came out on release! Controversial, it is! Great game, go buy it now! ;-)
Violence and mayhem... who could ask for anything more?

Okay... so this GTA is brutal, has no moral value and probably will corrupt the less stable. The plus side you ask? This game is fun! You can mow down pedestrians, can steal or blow up anything you wish (with weapons like pistols, machine guns, flamethrowers and missile launchers) and if you can "talk" a cop out of parting with his squad car, you have one fastest vehicles in the game to do it with!
The whole story of this game? Well, you work for the mob, and they need a LOT of things done. Everything from whacking the D.A. to planting car bombs to getting "the stuff" from a rival gang. Just be careful, one too many felonies and the police are hunting you down (and if you really tick them off, they set up road-blocks and can blow up your car if you take too many hits) This game is a little excessive in the language department, but it only adds to the realism (which there isn't a lot of... most police officers don't carry automatic weapons in real life). The downside is that the game itself has a tendancy to lock up and I've gotten a mysterious "red (not even blue) screen of death" in which it just says "fatal error" and gives the vector that is messed up (happens a lot if you use a cheat-code), and by the last mission (in which you need 5 million points)... you get a little tired of trying to collect points. The last bad thing is the graphics... which are okay. If you're a true graphics nit-picker, this game isn't really for you... but if your okay with a game that is a couple years old, this one is pretty cool.
Just not fun.

I dunno... I loved the concept, but the control kills it. I dont like having to push a gas button to walk! Thankfully they fixed this in GTA 3 & 4. Those games are incredible. Buy those asap!!
I am giving the game 3 stars for having to cojones to bring this kind of gaming to the world.
I Luv it

I expected something simalar to GTA III. I was wrong! I didn't like this game. The graphics and the controls stink. So does the view! I suggest that you get Vice city and GTA III before you get this!
The irreverent is about the best thing in this game.

I don't know about any other player, but I have a limited tolerance for an overhead-perspective game where the main objective is to drive around.
This game has a great deal of weaknesses. Limited variety, monotonous designs that are irritating to navigate through, not enough weapons (if you assign an assassination, how can you not point the player to a weapons cache?), and too many ways of failing. If a cop catches you you fail; if you die you fail; if you miss a deadline (and it's easy, given the amount of traffic you'll run into and the annoying street designs), you fail. At some point I just went, "Too bad" and started running down pedestrians, but that also got boring in a pinch.
One of the worst things? Controls. The forward/backward control scheme is absolutely horrendous, it's a pain in the neck trying to aim your guns, and there are a lot of times when your character does things you don't ask him to -- when using the bazooka, for example, very often the explosion would turn you around so that if you press walk, you might end up walking right into the fire because your character just turned all by himself.
GTA London was a little more fun for me, but also wore off extremely quickly. I had expected a game from the perspective of a criminal to have much more life in it than this. Perhaps an RPG (create your own gangster!) is a better way to go.
