This is still the best 2D castlevania ever, it's story is great and so is the gameplay! but when playstation games go into the greatest hits, they have to sell for $19.99, and amazon is selling it for 47 bucks. so if you want the game, buy it at some other website.

Castlevania is a darkly digital adventure into the Gothic world of the Dracula legend.
There's the ubiquitous Vampire Hunter, this one's name is "Richter Belmont", a 23 - year old mortal hunting the Lord of The Undead, estimated to be over 400 years old.
Richter's 17-year old girlfriend, "Maria Renard" goes looking for him, & is, of course, captured by Count Vlad Tepes Dracula {sic}; so she ends up presenting an additional problem / obstacle for Richter.
These magnificent creatures so easily beaten by inexperienced & pathetic mortals? Please.
Obviously, the philosphical theme is that of the "Good vs. Evil" simplicity, but remember, it is just a game, after all. There are some idealistic disturbances, such as werewolves being slaughtered, & of course, there's no real choice of actually being Dracula Himself, or a demon, for that matter, but the player does get an opportunity to battle, & even kill them.
Alucard, Dracula's confused & ingrate son, is an option, however, he has the same type of mentality besetting 'Nick Knight'; that is to say, unappreciative of the magnificent being he is, & the Dark Gift bestowal.
'Death' {Thanatos} makes a special appearance, giving Alucard a dire warning, & ends up making off with his weapons... he he he.....
After some brief scathing philosophical arguementation, in which the Dracula character makes a rather good point, the battle begins, amidst the triumphant & haunting strains of an organ.
Castlevania comes off as being a 'cross' between a movie & a videogame.
Castlevania contains magnificent scenery, & some pretty damned good music.
One major warning: Watch out for Demons!
Best castlevania ever!

Yup, I first played this game bout 6 or so years ago and didn't like it, being myself a die-hard Castlevania Fan. But then, back on spring break this year, rented it just to see...
I figured out my mistake after just 5 minutes of playing.
What can I say? Everybody has already covered how wonderful SOTN is. I just can't say no more, I love this game. I liked the plot, the music (oh, man, the music is just to die for), the sprites are so darn well made, the game has this special atmosphere that grabs you and puts you there, in Castle Dracula. I could just spend tons and tons of lines writing about how magnificent this game is.
The only downside that I see in SOTN was the voice acting, but hey, nothing and nobody's perfect. The game has excellent replay value, so you will keep coming back for more Castlevania action. Hey, I even take it on my laptop for those long trips away from my PSX!.
Oh, can't wait to play Lament of Innocence. I heard it's Castlevania 64 (which stunk) in steroids. Might as well give it a try.
ONE OF THE BEST PSX GAMES

This game is one of the best games I've ever played on Playstation. Once I started playing it, I just couldn't set it down. This game has hidden magic attacks, more than a dozen swords with special attacks, you can transform into creatures, it has hundreds of items and armor, and you can play in an amazingly HUGE castle. But once you think you've beaten it, you've only seen half of the game. it has a few different endings in the game. The game is great but its not for little kids. The game has blood, gore, and violence in it. Its its for kids age 13 or older.
You owe it to yourself to get this

You've no doubt heard all of the glowing reviews of this game. So here's another: the gameplay, graphics, and sound are all top-notch and leagues above all those other 3D games. There is no excuse for not owning this, even if you didn't like other Castlevania games. People should get a Playstation for this game it's so good. It's just too bad that most people will right it off because it's "old-fashioned". Even worse, it hasn't sold well, so a true, 2D sequel isn't too likely to happen.

Castlevania SOTN is definately the best in the series, the Change from Whip Slinging Belmonts to the Spell casting Alucard was a great one! Sounds and music are excellent, 2-d side scrolling is the best of its kind. Voice acting is great, controls are solid, everything about this game rocks. A must buy for any Castlevania Fan and any fan of Great games!!!
An Almost Perfect RPG! 4.5/5 Stars!

Castlevania... undoubtedly one the best of its genre.
The storyline is fairly simple. You are Alucard, a righteous vampire who has sworn to fight against your immortal father, Count Dracula. Since his death, you have been in an eternal slumber. One mysterious night, you awake from your slumber sensing a great evil. You then stumble on Castlevania, the castle of Count Dracula. Meanwhile, Richter Belmont supreme vampire hunter and slayer of Count Dracula, mysteriously disappears at the same time. So off you go, venturing through the vast castle.
The graphics seem a bit outdated at first; it still uses the 2d arcade view. However, once your start playing... and playing... and playing, you will soon forget all about it. As you jump around, slashing wildly at zombies and throwing fireballs at grotesque monsters all the while gathering experience and magical items, you lose track of time and everything else around you. It's just too good to stop. Even getting killed every now and then doesn't worry you.
However, rest assured, it won't last too long and turn you into a hermit. The game although excellent in its gameplay, is rather short. The first time I played it, I finished it in 8 hours; and I like to take things slow. But of course, you would want to explore every nook and cranny in this huge game packed with secrets, wouldn't you? Even then, the total play time would take less than 20 hours. This seems to be the only flaw with the game - most people will tire of it in less than a week.
Value conscious gamers might want to have a careful think about buying this. Still, the game is above average. Great gamplay complemented with a superb soundtrack. (my favourite track is Moonlight Nocturne.)In my opinion, it was worth my dollars.
Any RPG fans should have no excuse not getting this, except maybe if they've been hit real hard on the head.
