Unlike most Castlevania games with the whip-wielding, Belmont clan, you get to play Alucard, the vampire son of Dracula. Who as a character, a fighter and a magician, is a heckuva lot more interesting!
Alucard has awesome magics that make the game fun as he can turn himself into a bat, a wolf and mist, allowing a kind of freedom of movement that isn't available in so many games.
The graphics are okay, the story is pretty good (and the joy there is that after you beat it the first time, you can skip cutscenes, unlike the FF series!), but the gameplay is awesome! Almost every enemy in the game has two things that you can find if you keep killing them, and some of them are extremely valuable and rare. After you beat the game the first time, you can go back and collect MORE items that weren't available in the first go-round. Also, the amount of map-coverage you pulled off will dictate your ending.
You also buy all kinds of things from the librarian (items also change after you win the first time) including spells, a map, weapons, etc... Some of these items are amazingly expensive, but some are just too cool to not save up for. Like Joseph's Cloak which allows you to change your cloak to any color you like, and the duplicator which allows any consumable item to never deplete.
Also, if you are feeling masochistic, you can play the game through as Richter. There are several areas where Richter can't get into, but his jumping uppercut (which can be done over and over again mid-air) will have him able to get through to fight Shaft, the evil priest. Richter collects nothing, and it makes the game feel like the first castlevania (you don't get to collect anything, except hearts and money). About all you really have is map coverage, but if you want a new angle, it has you covered!
I have never come across a game with so much replay value, and I've been playing video games since the early 80s. This game is a true treasure, and I have been hoping and praying they'd make a sequel, an expansion pack or SOMETHING!
I've had this game roughly two years, and it's STILL my all time PS game, and that includes PS2!
A masterpiece. . . as simple as that.

There is a reason hand-drawn sidescrollers are still being made: there is so much expression in these games that cannot yet be displayed in polygons, and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is no exception. The characters and backgrounds are very well-drawn, the tunes set the tone well, the controls are top notch, the storyline is great, and the animation is perfect.
In addition to be to being quite possibly the best side-scroller ever made, Symphony of the Night's music holds true to the title with well-orchestrated tunes that only a jaded misosymphonist -yes, I made that up- could hate.
As the story goes, Dracula rises once every century to terrorize the the innocents of Transylvania. This is where a Belmont usually comes in to thwart Dracula's evil plots and send him back to where he came from. When Dracula dies (albeit temporarily) his castle vanishes with him. This time, however, things are a little different.
Only four years after Richter Belmont defeated the Count, Dracula's castle rises again. Maria Rennard, Richter's cousin who helped him defeat Dracula, decides to investigate the castle after her cousin mysteriously disappears.
Over 400 years ago, Dracula was betrayed by his son, Alucard, who aided Trevor Belmont in Dracula's defeat along with Grant (a nimble thief) and Sypha (a vampire-hunting sorceress). Now Alucard, who had put himself into what was supposed to be an eternal sleep, has risen again to put an end to his father ... permanently!
As Alucard, you fight Dracula's evil minions while exploring the castle and the ground upon which it sits. The castle itself is made up of main halls, a church, a bell tower, a courtyard, and a library, among other things. Under ground are the abandoned mine and the catacombs. Things get even more interesting when or if you get to an upside-down version of the castle, where you face an evil grim reaper in earth "above" the castle, and eventually Vlad himself.
What I also like about the game is the way it somewhat portrays the real Vlad Tepes Dracule, with impaled victims in the background and an equally menacing portrait.
So is there anything wrong with this game? Ofcourse there is! While you will get the chance to play as Richter, you'll never be able to play as Maria unless you buy a Japanese Sega Saturn (or an American one with a mod-chip) and Nocturn in the Moonlight.
Konami also screwed Maria when they released Dracula X on Super Nintendo in America. Maria was playable in the Turbo PC-CD version in Japan.
This game is a must have...........

And definately the best Castlevania game. Alucard is my hero. I beat it way long ago but I still turn it on and play all the time! Never gets boring. Some of the other newer games for GBA have good ideas about making your characters super-customizable, though. I like that idea... if they were combined it would be a game so awesome, it'd be unbelievable.

This is an excellent installment to the Castlevania series. You might be thinking "hey it's 2-D I dont wanna play this old ****" but you'll be widely mistaken after taking first glanse at this game. In the game you are Alucard son of Dracula and a women named Lisa. You are around 600 years old and ashamed of your cursed blood line. So after teaming up with Trevor Belmont you enter an eternal slumber, but you are awakened when evil is afoot. Castlevania (Dracula's castle) is rumored to appear evrey 100 years but 5 years after Richter Belmont destroyed it, and Dracula, Richter dissapeared. With no idea where to look for him Maria went to look for Richter, and out of no where the castle appeared as if to show her the way. So Alucard goes to desrtroy the castle. He in the end destroys the Dark Priest Shaft saves Richter from possesion of Shaft and destroys Dracula. I enjoyed this game due to the excellent music, storyline and item versitilaty.

As the first Castlevania game I have got, this game set a good example and now I am collecting Castlevania games. As Alucard, half-vampire and half-human, you must fight your way throughout a giant castle. Although somewhat easy, it is one of the best games I have ever played for the Playstation. The graphics aren't too good for it is a 2D side-scrolling game. Usually, side-scrolling games aren't very good, but this is AWESOME! This game, Tekken 3, and Crash Bash are the best games I have probably ever played. In other words, unless you're cracked up, this game will be one of the best games you have ever played. Now, since I got lots of new games, I'm off to rate more games. Good night!
Best of the series.

This game, without a doubt, is by far the best game in the Castlevania series. Even if you previously havent played any of the other games it's still worth it. There's not much else to say besides it's a classic 2d game and perfectly dark. Alucard is a great main character....but that's not just the reason it's so good. Everything about it is great...from the 2d landscapes and backrounds...to the vast selection of weaponry and armor...and relics...all the way to the voiceovers. There are also tons of secret corridors that will take an eternity to find. Whether you like classic games or not you will probably like this...Forget those lamo N64 Castlevanias...this is where it's at...
Best 2-D game for the PSOne, hands down!!!!

Your'e Alucard who is a vampire instead of a whip-cracking Belmont. Since he is a vampire, you can gain many ability's which you have to find before you can use them. Plus with so many different weapons that there are in this game, you will never have to use the same one over.
Oh and the bosses are very well thought up, this is a must have for any Castlevania fan or adventure/action fan.
Awesome game, I would have given it a 10 out of 10 if possible.

A great addition to the Castlevania series. Not a difficult game to master. Plus, there's a tons of secrets that give the game great replayability value. You won't really find a game that is as well planned by the software designers as this one. A great addition to any PSone collection, this game greatly boosts the Castlevania reputation.

This game is great on its own merits. However, it is a breakaway from the traditional Castlevania level based format. Second of all, you are not one of the Belmonts, or a human at all (you are a half-vampire). Thirdly, you do not have a whip, you have a sword. Despite the breaking of many of the Castlevania traditions, this is a spectacular game. Great graphics, great music, great gameplay. As a consolation, there is a way to play as Richter Belmont after beating the game.
This is my second favorite of the Castlevania series, the best of all being Castlevania: Dracula X for the Turbo-Graphx 16 console. Do not play the Dracula X for Super Nintendo! It sucks!
