Such a Disappointment

1 Rating: 1, Useful: 7 / 11

I cannot with good conscience recommend this game to any potential shopper.

As a true and decades long fan of the Heroes of Might and Magic series, I must admit to being so very disappointed with this game out of the box. I enjoy the strategy and tactics that HOMM has always offered, but HOMM 5 is too limited in scope to rise to the challenge.

As a casual player, I just want to play Heroes without a time constraint or shifting objectives which is what the vast majority of the game out of the box is all about. I have never really enjoyed playing the previous campaigns, and that is in essence all that is included in this game. The six individual scenarios are scaled down campaigns that have shifting objectives or else you can lose without even combating any opponent.

The potential for HOMM 5 remains. It can be a successful game even in my eyes. But Ubisoft (distributor) and Nival (game producer) are incredibly slow and unresponsive in setting up promised patches and increasing the limited variety of gameplay.

Unplayable

This is a great game, but lag/slow jerkiness makes it essentially unplayable--and I have WELL above the minimum requirements in regard to my system.

Impressive, but I am not impressed. My system either meets or exceeds the minimum requirements on the box, but I had to turn off the music and sound just to make it playable. 5 minutes to load a saved game. About the same to exit to the desktop.

I have played Heroes I thru III and saw steady improvement. V is awesome for its 3-D graphics, but unless you have a really high end PC, yoo had better be patient. Lack of single player maps or a map editor is a real drawback. even the first patch does not include the map editor, but it is over 50 MB just for bugs, real or perceived. the patch will also not download in multiple sessions with Download Manager. It all has to come in one session.

it's too bad this one got through Beta testing the way it is. it feels more like UBISoft shipped the Beta version.

Hard to enjoy

Darn, another great attempt to build from the beauty of HOMM 3, which was the best of the classic turn based adventure games. While I loved the colorful landscapes and 3D animation, I expereinced similar difficulty with the interface described by others. The game would lag significantly, especially when zooming. Also, sometimes, I couldn't get a path on open terrain (e.g. in an underground cavern), based on the view. Clicking on open ground wasn't enough, I would have to spin the camera angle until it would allow me to finally set the path. . . really frustrating. All of the animations and graphics are great, but these other issues take away from the enjoyment of the game.

Heroes 5 - Dumbed Down, Made Pretty

Note: This review is for the single player game. Multi player might be a whole other story.

I gave this game only 3 stars even though I played the entire campaign.

The Good:
* Gorgeous graphics.
* Interesting story line
* Good finish - more often than not, games don't have an appropriate ending for whatever reason. Heroes 5 has an adequate ending.
* Interesting characters - the campaign shows the story from different view points.

The Bad:
* There are basically no strategy elements to this game. Run through, build all you can build - that's all there is to know about strategy. You can play through in your sleep on "normal" difficulty level without having to think too much. I think there was one challenging battle in the entire campaign.
* No feedback for tactics, eg what to do on the battlefield. There are a lot of spells that improve your creatures. But what improved and how much? No idea, because the creature stats don't show spell effects. That's bad and makes tactics guesswork.
* Removed caravans instead of improving them. The old Warlords 2 game had a way better caravan system than any of the heroes games. I want to be able to set up supply lines to get the armies to where I need them. In a way though it's not necessary - see the first point.

The Ugly:
* The cut-scenes are terrible. The characters' movements have nothing to do with what they are saying. Just plain awful. I endured them only because I wanted to follow the story line.
* Boring situations - I don't want to spoil but at one point you have to send your heroes all over the map to collect more armies to defeat one enemy. The thing is, you have all the time you want for this, so it's not a challenge at all. The more you wait the better off you are. It's just boring - wait long enough until you have enough cash and armies produced, then send out heroes to collect them.

3 stars - a thoroughly mixed bag.

Great!

Most of the negative reviews I've seen note compatibility problems. I have had none. About the only issues I've had is that I tried to install the US 1.1 Patch, not realizing I had bought a Euro version. However, all I had to do was locate the Euro patch and it installed fine. BTW, my computer was high-end about 3 years ago, but I run everything at the highest level and have NO slow-down.

Now for my review:
(1) At first the 3-D switch bothered me, but it's grown on me. Overall I think it's an improvement over previous incarnations. However, I think this will vary by taste.
(2) I don't like how it's hard to see the beautiful details of your units during battle. You have to move the camera back so far to see everything that you miss those details. This is a minor complaint, but...
(3) The game is very much like previous HOMM games, with an overall improvement in graphics and GUI.

I am quite happy with my purchase.

Heroes 5 is defintaly a fun game but it is really hard, i was on the last level for the first campiangn (sorry about the spelling) and i was at the last level and i could never beat it i thought about selling the game but i downloaded patch 1.1 it has a easy mode but it was still kinda hard but i beat the level :) The graphics would be a 4 out of 5 because it does have great graphics but when characters talk most of the time you never see there mouth move. The music is really good, and i hope this helped people out. Overall this game is really good (YAY!!! i'm on the second campiang on the second last level!!!! :)YAY)

The grandkids have really enjoyed playing the game. However, the game as we received it would not install. We had to download an update to it before we could get it to install. Once, the update was installed we have not had any more problems with the game.

If you're a fan of the older Heroes this probably isn't for you.

As a HUGE fan of Heroes I, II, III and even IV, Heroes V came as a big disapointment to me. For one there is no autosave which was great with the others. The game had great graphics with the factions but I wasn't too thrilled about the creature graphics. I have a big problem about creatures that aren't proportionate. It's ridiculous to have arms and legs that are twice as large as you torso or hands that are bigger than your body. I know this is fantasy but come on. There were also very few maps; hardly enough maps to put out on a game. Overall, I hate the game. If the other Heroes had played like this I would have never have liked them and I've been playing them for 10 years.

Disappointed

Now that the game is running I like it.
I had to upgrade my computer to make it work, very disappointing!
Game seems to be missing some elements that they say are coming on the first patch.
I recommend waiting!
