Creepy characters, clunky controls

2 Rating: 2, Useful: 0 / 0

Despite the fact that the actors from the show lent their voices to the game, Alias is only mildly entertaining. The game box promises "relentless spy action" and "cinematic tension", yet does a great deal of falling short. Most of the missions are drawn-out and some of the action inconsistencies are frustrating (sometimes Sidney can jump across ledges, sometimes she can't) and attempting to solve some of the objectives will either leave you scratching your head or smashing your PS2 against the wall. Try not to get creeped out as Sidney's eyes shift back and forth like the ones in a haunted house ghost picture or how about Dixon and Marshall? The faces look pretty good, but the video game bodies don't match, giving them a bobble-head appearance. And what about that skimpy ending? Was that a rush job or what? One redeeming quality I found was the cut scene where Marshall gets slapped several times. That was good for a laugh.

At this point, the game is several years old and most likely vanished into oblivion, but for the occasional late-comer (such as I was), consider yourself warned. The game isn't totally bad, but it's far from great.

AMAZING GAME

I highly recommend this game to everyone. Yes, ALIAS was one of my favorite television shows, which added to my great experience with the game, but even an outsider would love it. The characters were great, and looked like the actors who play them in real life. The voices were also the voices of the actors, which was great. The actual game was challenging, but solvable, and very fun! The story was like just another episode of the show. In the game you get to hack into computers, tail Sark, steal weapons, free prisoners, and basically beat the bad guys. The graphics aren't top notch, but they are very good. You, as Sydney Bristow, get sent on many different missions, which are all different and exciting. You would think the game would end after some missions, but then HQ sends you on a few more. It's really great for the story to keep going like that, because I didn't want it to end! At one point Sydney even gets trapped and has to call HQ for help, where you get to play as Michael Vaughn for a little while. The dialogue is great and sounds like what they would say on the show...Especially with Marshall, the op-tech guy. He is hysterical as always...
Anyway, I could go on for hours about how great this game is...Again, I would like to say that I HIGHLY recommend this game, especially to the ALIAS fans out there. It's truly amazing.

Decent game, but it gets tough (impossible?) in that last level.

Alias scores again

I've read the reviews on this game about the "uncontrollable" controls and cameras and whatnot and I couldn't believe my eyes. I am an inexperienced gamer, and found the controls seemless and easy to use. As for the save points, they were plenty, and the game is pretty self-explanatory. It is at times as challenge, but that is why I, and I hope others, play a game is for a bit of challenge-- nothing too large.

The best part of this game is the voice-acting. Marshal Flinkman is a funny as ever, and the voices sound real. The characters look very real-life-- there are some obvious flaws in the FMVs, but for the most part it is pretty seamless.

For those who complain about the lack of "moves", I wonder if they read the strategy manuel. Using a combination of buttons, many moves can be used, and there is even a special "stealth attack" move that comes in very handy. There was obvious attention to detail with using the stealth control and various uses of seeing people. There is a stealth mode that allows for easy targeting of enemies, and a thermal vision mode as the well as the regular "seeing" mode. All of these work well and have specific purposes. You can have Sydney slink around walls, collect all manners of weapons (such as pool cues, shovels, night sticks, etc) to use against the guards and enemies. There are all kinds of operational gadgets used, and chances for interaction.

The weak spot in this game is simply the variety of getting around. Granted, it's a "stealth" game, but in almost every mission, the majority of it is slinking around the walls and taking out the guards. This is fun, and is interesting to an extent, but when it happens for EVERY mission it can become a bit tiresome. Also, there should be a little more story substance added to pump it up. The FMVs are few and far between, and Sydney just pops from one operation to another-- there ought to be soem more space and analyzing inbetween.

I had a blast playing this game, and I think that others would too. This is a replay game (I play it over and over). If you are a fan of Alias, you will love this game. If you don't watch the show, you'll still have a lot of fun playing it. All in all, 4 stars! It was a very satifying experience.

Just like the series

If your a fan of the series then you will like the game. It is a great chance to play Ms. Bristo. There were a few clitches in the game. I was also disapointed that there weren't more fighting movies. Overall the game was fun and a good way to pass the time.

'there's no one to trust and no way out'

"Behind every pretty face there's a secret but behind Sydney Bristow's there's a conspiracy, deception, suspicion, espionage and there's no one to trust and no way out."
I can imagine there was much conspiring at Acclaim H.Q once the brass saw this terrible game.
The deception is attempting to sell this game on game play.
My suspicion is that Acclaim H.Q realised they had a dud and did all they could to sell it on the back of Jennifer Garner.
And why not you may ask. Thats where the espionage shows it's evil face. Jennifer Garner and the other cast deliver an extrodinary and entertaining effort. But deep within the Acclaim staffer's ranks i suspect a lone programmer and an unwitting texture artist set about a dastardly plan to make this game bland, and boring. Ensuring the controls were unresponsive, the camera angles infuriating, and the save points too few and far between. Whilst being brazen enough to introduce a button smashing fight system, I believe that Acclaim H.Q may have felt that 'there's no one to trust and no way out' other than to release a game that could have been so much better, and was certainly promised to be great. If you are a true fan, wait for this game to hit the weekly shelf at your local Blockbuster...and then hire it. You won't be missing anything.

Alias TV fans should get Metal Gear and Splinter Cell fans 2

Sydney and most of the other characters in the show are in the game. In many ways, this game resembles Metal Gear quite a bit. The stealth, and necessary fights, the traps, etc. Of course, Metal Gear outclasses Alias but miles and miles. But Metal Gear fans will still find this game quite entertaining. The story is exciting. It is less stealth than Metal Gear. Well, the storyline in this Alias is basically 100% realistic in our world whereas Metal Gear is a bit reality plus fantasy. I certainly feel like a CIA agent playing this game.

That said, the movement and camera adjustments are not satisfactory. Sometimes, you could not get Syndey to look to direction because the graphics would not allow it. Most importantly, however, Sydney do not fight very well. The motions during the fight are slightly constrained by what I assume to be lacklustre design and effort; not very smooth graphics in combat mode.

Nevertheless, I mean, you couldn't really expect Metal Gear or Splinter Cell quality in every single stealth game. So I think all in all, Alias is a game worth the money. Something to do, to have fun. But don't expect life-shattering experiences.

Alias the Game satisfies me while I wait for new episodes

This game is like being immersed in an episode of the great Alias tv show. With the show in hiatus until the new season, this game really fills a need for all the excitement and fun of the show. I love the characters, the action, the graphics and thrill of being Sid! This game is a wonderful treat for a fan.

3 stars because of the Characters only

I rated this game on the Characters and story only. It was very good to look at and the actors playing the characters make it worth checking out, but I thought the camera and gameplaying aspects are horrible if you aren't an experienced gamer. There is some hints, but geez the crazy camera and hard to handle controls had me throwing this game down after about an hour.

Alias is a good game but not as good as I hoped

I expected to be playing this game in October 2003 and now having played it I'm left wondering, what took them so long. The aspects of the game that have been inputted by the cast and crew are great; the voices, the music, the storyline (even if the end is a bit poor).
However some of the features added by Acclaim are not up to standard. The sound effects are awful (especially the female enemies), Anna Espinosa and Sark have the same fighting sound effects as all the other enemies, if you die you go back to the main menu, it doesn't save the options, some of the characters look a little dodgy, especially Vaughn, who also fights like a girl (because he has the same moves as Syd) and the AI is dodgy at times (the amount of times a person calls for back-up and receives none as well as losing interest if Syd moves out of room or even to the other side of one).
But it's not all bad, some of the weapons are cool (I like broom and the spoon thing that never breaks). The controls are good even though some people may find the fighting a little random; this is probably because the same combination will give different moves depending on you location (near a wall or behind a character). Most people will probably find that Sydney can't jump but what she can do is flip forward, side ways and backwards. The costumes are good some taken from the show; one of the best costumes is used the least in the Tattoo parlour. The attention to detail of some of the background characters is poor (check out the Sark's drivers date in the casino) and the environments are a little bland.
The PS2 version is graphically inferior to the Xbox version as you might expect and it takes so long to load (maybe I've just got too used to my Xbox)
The fact that the well-known red wig used on the front cover that is not even in the game tells us that Acclaim are relying hugely on the success of the show to sell the game. That's the only reason I bought it. So a must for fans but if you're not a fan either start watching Alias or give this one a miss.
