The must have racing game for the XBox!

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 9 / 9

...

This game is cool and fun! The cars whip through the tracks at high speeds with oncoming and same direction traffic....with collisions around every turn. The player car has a good feel of physics while it's driving and is realistic...but has that good balance of not-to-realistic that can become frustrating in other racing games (ahem *cough*grandturismo3*cough*). The tracks themselves are varied and cool looking with all the Xbox flare you might expect like global lighting, shelf shading objects and nice enviornment mapping. The tracks have also lots of jumps in various spots that give you more time as a bonus...making it sometimes manditory that you hit those jumps! Being chased by the police is a must in the Test Drive series....at they're in this one alright. Bumping you, knocking you....anything to pull you over.

Overall, this game is way cool and a must have for racing fans and anyone with an Xbox.

This game is fun and entertaing, for a while that is.. Its graphics to start, arent the best, but they arent the worst. The car models are pretty good. But where in the hell is the car damage, XBOX should have car damage. The towns you drive through look pretty good, and the story behind is not as bad as i thought. But the races are good, but after a while, it gets repetitive, you drive through the same city 10 times, its just in diferant parts, and its not that hard to win. It goes along good, you get differant kinds of races like pink slips and linear and circut. The Bad thing is in pink slip is, if you lose, your outa the job, NO, pink slip meens u lose your car, you should just lose your car and not your carreer.

so hear are the pros and cons.

Pros-1.Not bad graphics
2. Very enternaing for a while.
3. Lots to do.
4. Awesome cars, for muscle car lovers.
5. Good underground story.
6. Love the charachters u race with in the underground.

Cons-1. No car damage

2.Gets repetitive.
3. Pink slips-take the car-not the career
4. In underground u race through the same city, its annoying.
5. NOt enough corses in cop chase.
6. Could be alot better

So, to conclusion, this game is a deffinant rent...

A very fun, realistic game where you are in control!

This game is very exciting. You can be the bad guy or you could be the cops, with three different police cars to choose from. In Project Gotham Racing, you can't be the cops. In Test Drive, if you do a circuit, linear or quick race, you can choose your car and the color. You can also customize your car with your own colors and shininess. If you buy Test Drive don't spend more money for a steering wheel, the car is very easy to control without it. The graphics are as good as can be. The cars look real, the scenarios look real, EVERYTHING LOOKS REAL! You can choose from four different scenarios: London, Tokyo, San Francisco and Monaco as you unlock them during the game. It is also very fun playing 2-player mode. You can't play with more than two people. The ONLY negative part about this game is that you can only choose between two cars in Underground mode. Buy it, it's a great game!

Total arcade action... if you like that sort of thing.

The things you love about Test Drive and hate about Test Drive run in a dead heat. The action is fast and furious, the streets flashing by in a 100 mph plus blur is a bit of a rush but ultimately there really isn't much to look at, no check that, there's a lot to look at but there really isn't much to see that we haven't already seen in say... Crazy Taxi. Frame rates are solid but the landscapes are anemic and flat, the cars don't fare much better, feeling a tad on the jagged side with muted paint jobs and reflections. The sound is horrible, with some effects missing altogether, when you pile into a lamp post at break neck speed, there is no sound of crumpled steel, just an odd silence. Which brings us to a another major disappointment, car damage, like the sounds of destruction, there is none, not so much as a scratch or paint chip, no twisted fenders or one single dented bumper, which in the end makes Test Drive feel unfinished to say the least. On the up side however Test Drives levels are large and teaming with traffic and peds, the sense of speed is very nice and the controls are comfortable and easy to acclimate yourself to and the Cop Chase mode is a hoot but in the end there are better and much prettier examples of driving games out there, simulation; Project Gothem, arcade; see Wreckless and for a little of both we'll just have to wait and see how Midtown Madness 3 fares. You wont love test drive but you wont hate it so if you're looking for something different to drive around on your X Box this weekend (that's arcade style crash 'em up fun) rent it and save your money for something useful... like say, a cute poster of a kitty.

horrible

This game is the horrible. The graphics are bland and boring.
1) Something feels wrong about the steering / turning physics, trying to power slide will kill all of your forward momentum.
2) The thing that ticks me off the most about this game is the AI of other drivers. They follow a line, which you cannot push them off. You can try to nudge them, but its like trying to push a house! If you are driving next to them, and their line crosses your path, they will ram right into you sending you flying into a wall.
3) The other thing that ticks me off to NO END is the cops. Cops in this game try to catch you, but the key word here is "YOU". Watch the other cars fly by the cop at 100mph, yet the cop ignores them until YOU pass him. The cop will continue to chase you forever. You can drive until the cop is off your radar, but rest assured he still knows where you are and is coming for you. One time I saw a computer car crash into a parked cop car, sent it flying 100 feet, but the cop car did nothing until I passed it.
4) I can't stand the music (which comes from real artist), its mostly rap. If that's your thing, fine, but it isn't mine.
5) Booting is a hassle, turn it on, walk the dog, take a nap, come back and maybe all of the ads for technology and publishers are over.
6) The opening FMV sequence is horribly compressed, looks like utter [garbage].

Things I DO like:
1) The attempt at a story line.
2) PONG. You get to play PONG while it loads the levels.
3) Wide screen support (which is why I originally bought this game)
4) Loading and saving games seem very quick. Apposed to other xbox titles.

Best Game Ever

I don't know what these other guys are saying. This game rocked. So what your car doesn't get all beat up when you roll it into a bus! This game has more guts than any other racing game out there. The single and multiplayer modes are much different from previous racing games and much more fun: head-to-head races, drag races, cop chases, laps... The single player can be frustrating at times, but that just adds to the excitement. The cars are beautiful and keep you hooked on the game in order to win better and cooler machines.
Just stop reading this and buy the game, you can thank me later...

Nothing special

As far as driving games go, Test Drive offers nothing particularly compelling. It sets itself apart from other driving games in that it attempts to wrap a story around the races. Seeing where this story goes makes for interesting gameplay, but that's about it.

The driving itself is pretty fun, with courses ranging from twisting urban environment to rurual settings where you can really open it up. You have a variety of cars at your fingertips, ranging from classic muscle cars to modern Italian supercars.

The biggest downside to the game is that there is no damage model whatsoever. If you get into a head on at full speed you'll see some impressive physics as the other car goes flying, but no cars sustain any damage. All you loose is time.

Test Drive is worth a rent, but there are better driving games out there for the XBox (such as Burnout and Project Gotham).

Difficult to play

I still remember the very first Test Drive game, for DOS. It had EGA graphics and all you had to do was press the up, left and right arrows, and it was TONS of fun.

Later versions of Test Drive for PC added better graphics and better physics, but otherwise remained the same. This Xbox version is more or less on the same track (no pun intended). The graphics is good but not much better than the PS2 version. The gameplay is basically the same -- let's race and outrun the cops! -- although there's a mode ("underground") with a storyline and another where you play the cop and tag the six racers to "arrest" them. There are four cities to choose from, and a seemingly large number of tracks.

What frustrates me about this game is, in the basic racing mode, you have to be #1 to win the race and unlock the goodies. And this is very difficult to achieve, because the AI competitors are unforgivingly fast (even though at times they seem a little "stupid" as they crash into walls and other cars -- eventually they always beat you). Plus, it's very easy for you to crash into walls and other cars -- the car physics model is somewhere between arcade and serious simulation -- and if you do this once in a race, there's pretty much no way you can finish 1st; so you'll need start the race over.

The designers could have made the game more accessibly by simply allowing a 2nd or 3rd finish, even if that earned fewer goodies. I played the same tracks over and over again, and after two hours, I simply came to *hate* this game. It's sad how un-fun the Test Drive series has become.

So, in short, PS2-level graphics and difficult gameplay make this game at most a rental title... unless you are a diehard racing sim fan.

Good But not the best

In ways this game can be fun but in other ways in can be as frustrating as hell!.
First, in underground mode you can only race as two cars?!.

Drag races get pretty boring after a while.

Cop chases are great but why do you always have play as the cop,
why not be able to run from cops?!!.

Most of the music is good but some [disappoints].

And finally graphics are great, as usual with XBOX.
So rent it before you buy it.

game is worth more as a frisbee.

When i bought this game i thought it would be like gotham racing but with more of a variety, but i was wrong, it has less variety. No damage on the cars and the lighting sucks. Almost every level i have been to(which is as far as the 4th level on underground mode because i just gave up cause it was to damn long and hard.) is in the night which is anouying. Also you cant get a lead on the computer they are always right there. The cops are also anouying especailly when they pull you over right near the end of the level. Also the computer can knock you into oblivion but you cant even knock them off course, and characters are anouying, they say the same thing every time. This game isnt even worth renting and definantly do not! i repeat, do not buy test drive! Its an exspensive frisbee. In fact i am turning it into funco land.
