Nice looking game - not for adults though

My wife bought me this game as a kind of nostalgia gag gift. I remember playing Hot Wheels 'Crash' on the PC about 6 years ago and despite its intended audience being kids I got a real kick out of a genuine fun simple game.

Hot Wheel Stunt Track Challenge falls into that mode too; fun for kids, fun for adults as well. The game is fairly simply structured; you're on a gameshow and have to complete races/challenges in several different 'worlds' such as dinosaur land, spiderland, volcano world etc. Generally each challenge is either a straight-forward race against computer opponents or something a little off the wall such as knocking balls into pockets (billiards, with you as the white ball) or climbing to the top of a spiral and landing on a scorboard below.

The thing is - the control is a little difficult for young-uns. It has all the buttons assigned for racing, including boost and handbrake and it could prove frustrating for the extra little ones to cope with all the necessary controls. Since you HAVE to come 3rd or better to go to the next challenge it's obvious some races will have to be played through by a games-playing adult first. I would think the frustration factor for under 8s would be quite high with this game - unless your child is quite games savvy.

So adults will complete the game entirely in under and hour and very young kids might not quite be able to handle it, leaving only a small age window that ideally this game is suited for.

It does look incredible though, amazing frame rates and vibrant color and whilst the car handling is obviously not Gran Turismo or Project Gotham, the game offers a lot of fun even for the oldest gaming child at heart... such as me!

Ehhh....Has it's moments....

Granted it's Hot Wheels and you get to race with cool cars, but I'm a bit disheartened to notice the fact that the Hot Wheels games, as of late, have gotten progressively dumber since the release of Velocity X (THE BEST Hot Wheels game ever MADE!!)

It's apparent from moment one that this game has been designed for kids (yeah yeah...I know games ARE designed for kids) I mean LITTLE kids, like 3 and up. DISNEYLAND has nothing on the wall-to-wall screamingly bright color in this game!! Plus, many of the challenges are a bit TOO cartoony (knocking buck teeth out of T-Rex's mouth, the giant bugs, driving down the spine of a giant dinosaur skeleton, playing "pool" on the deck of a pirate ship, etc.)...though I admit some of them WERE pretty fun (like pirate pool)...However, it left me feeling rather embarassed for playing them...Like somebody walking in on me watching, singing and dancing along to Barney by myself (AN EXAMPLE ONLY!!) Also I HATED that there were NO FREESTYLE STUNTS!!! That's half the fun right there! The aerial movements were about as fixed as a roller coaster on it's track.

It wasn't ALL bad though....
The "game-show" format of the game was entertaining (giving you a more "interactive" feel), as was tinkering in the "garage" customizing the look of the cars (although some of the "decals" looked more like goofy vending maching stickers).....You can now perform wheelies, that is kind of a cool addition. They added a long camera angle when making the big jumps (with a whistling breeze sound effect in the bkg.), adding a touch of thrill and suspense. I also liked how they improved the "turbo boost", making you feel like you're REALLY blasting off!!

But all in all, this game just doesn't "blow my skirt up" like Velocity X. And judging by the current Hot Wheel offerings, there may never be a game quite like that ever again...*sigh*
However, if you have a small child who's into Hot Wheels and/or racing, this game will knock his socks off, IMO.
