This is way better than the NES Castlvania! The graphics are pretty good. In the games, I choose Carrie over Reinhardt. I think magic is easier to work with than the whip. Although Reinhardt is pretty good.
Castlevania 64 is a true gaming experience!

Konami decided to take another step on the Castlevania series and put it in 3-D instead of a side scroller/2-D, and they did an awesome job! The graphics are good, but fuzzy (but hey its N64!) Awesome bosses, and it took me a while to beat it. You can choose from 2 characters Reinhardt and Carrie. Both have their own weapon but they both have their down side too. Reinheardt has the old school Castlevania weapon, the whip and a secondary weapon the dagger. But he is NOT a good choice for long range attacks. Carrie is a good choice if you want to stay far away from an enemy because she can shoot a magcical weapon, an energy ball, and secondary weapon-the magical rings on her arms. She is not as popular as Reinhardt, but she is very good. If you want to have an old school weapon, choose Reinhardt. If you want to beat the game choose normal.(with easy you only go to level five) The only downside is that the Final Dracula is VERY,VERY HARD.
I actually enjoy this game!

OK the game is a bit short, but the time spent playing the game is fun. Back in early 1999, I thought this game had some of the finest home console graphic I had ever see. The N64 you can tell is working over time so don't let the little bit of blurry detail bother you. A great game none the less. Personally, I don't think any of the Castlevania games even the excellent PSX and GBA games have matched the magic of the orginal Castlevania on the NES.
Symphony is ten times better

This is the best game I have ever played on n64.I would even say it blows Zelda out of the water. It incorperates all the things from the old Castelvania but has 3d excitement , great monsters, daytime changes, mystery, a lotta' vampires, and a set of charcters.
Castlevania is a great game, but could have been perfect.

Ater reading reviews upon reviews for Castlevania I was a little offended by the comparison to SOTN for playstation. I thought games were only supposed to be compared to other games on that system. So I have decided to review Castlevania based on games only for the N64.
I can really recomend Castlevania to anyone who is a fan of a 3d action game. The graphics are top notch and the sound gives you an eary feeling when you play. The game lets you take control of either of two characters, with some different levels and bosses, adding to the replay value of the game. Each character comes with a slightly different adventure and you are sure to never get tired with all the secrets that accompany the game.
The things that keep this game from being perfect are probably things that could have been fixed if the game was not rushed to complete. At times jumping from platform to platform becomes a problem. You have to angle yourself just right or else you plumit to your death. Also the camera angles are not always the most usefull, at times they may affect the jumping problems. There are three different camera angles, but they don't all cover the required viewing abilities. One other problem would be areas where you die. On the fifth level you have to work your way through gears without jumping. The problem is you can force yourself into small areas, where you won't fit and die, but this is only a minor flaw, and shouldn't plague any gamer.
For the most part Castlevania is an excellent game, and I would recomend it to anyone who wants to jump into a 3-d realm of Castlevania. While it doesn't have the rolw playing features, the action is fast and furious, and will keep you on the edge of your seat.
Not exactly SOTN(PSX's Castlevania)-but then what is?

While I was firmly against this beloved classic series going 3D,there was no way I wasn't going to play it.I needed to know if there was any way this new version could compare to the previous 2D versions(most notably SOTN,probably the very best of them all).Sadly,it does not compare to them, but it does ...oh,I guess you would say "compliment" the better ones in the series. I probably would have given it a higher score had they implemented a "Lara" jump move. You know, hold that wonderful 'walk' button, take 2 steps back, run & jump...Voila!Works like a charm every time(And,while that series has its flaws,it is the best at 3D jumping yet).Implementing a better jump control, would have prevented the platforming portions of the game from being as frustrating. So frustrating that those of the less patient temperment, might find themselves incuring additional expenses replacing broken controllers. Maybe I've been jaded by spending the last few months playing "Metal Gear Solid" and "Zelda:Ocarina of Time",after all these are two of the best games at character control in recent memory, but jumping and camera control are the downfall of most 3D games of the Action,Adventure,or Platform variety and that's what keeps this from getting a 'Gold' star instead of a 'Silver' star. One moment your having a grand old time exploring and slaying the undead, the next minute your hurling expletives at the TV because you've just died for the 20th time in a row because of those unforgiving jump and camera controls. The bottom line...rent it first-save on controllers later!
EXCELLENT!
