Great adventure game

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 10 / 11

This is a great adventure game, one that any fan of the genre should play and keep for his collection.

The atmosphere is great, reminds me of diablo 1 a little bit; perhaps because it was the same time period, or similar (or so I think). The sound is excellent, the story is just awesome and the gameplay is surprisingly good. The playing perspective is like Dungeon Siege, but remember - this is a quest, not a rpg like that one.

The fights are rare, they are at most necessary for the story; fighting is simple and minimal, you have hit and block and that's it - not that you'd need more - it's a quest after all.

One thing I found peculiar is that the rats are kind of big. I believe that this is intended though, to show that they were many rats in that period carrying the bubonic plague (also known as the Black Death which is mentioned in the game and is part of the story).

Now let's get to the part where you can hear what's wrong with the game :P

The game has too many loading screens, that even on a high-end system last at least 10 seconds. Here I should mention that you will despise them and get bored to death if you have a slower pc as they'll take a long time and you'll see them very often. Well that's the only thing "wrong", the next to follow could just not be so... enjoyable to certain players:

At first you might walk around not knowing where to go, until you learn the map and discover the locations - but you need to travel a lot anyway, so... get used to it :P

You also have to go hunting for herbs (plants, flowers) to make your potions - again, you have to know the map in order to know where to find them and that means you need to walk around the map a lot. Some people might not enjoy that... but it's sort of expected in this game. It would be weird not to walk and search for them.

There is a bit of reading involved - so if you're just looking for a game where you solve various puzzles - this is not the game for you. The story is in the texts. :)

The game has few bugs, minor at most and just like any fan of the genre would rate this game highly, so did I.

I have to say it but I didn't expect so much from such a small game though. Excellent!

Looks good, but slow and linear

Not bad, but not too fun in my opinion. Diablo look, 3rd person view. Very linear quest line, not many options. Very slow paced and a lot of leg work. Looks good and has interesting story, but I didnt complete chapter 2, it was just too tedius.

Interesting Plot, But...

In "Daemonica" you play Nicholas Farepoynt, a demon-hunter who has been summoned to Cavorn (a small town in medieval England) to help them solve the murder of a young girl. However when you arrive, you realize that even more people have been killed, and the townspeople seem to be going insane, one by one...

In order to figure out what's going on, you'll have to talk with the people of Cavorn - both living & dead, collect herbs to make various potions, explore every nook & cranny of this dark, dismal town, and occasionally fight for your very life.

Overall, I thought this game was both interesting & fun, plus the soundtrack was really good as well. However, there were several "downfalls" that really took away from my ability to fully enjoy this game. First, it takes a very long time for the various scenes to load - so you'll be running along & then all of the sudden a screen comes up that says "Loading...", and you have to wait close to 5 minutes for the loading to be complete. I also experienced a glitch where, for no apparent reason, the game would freeze up - and again it would take close to 5 minutes to unfreeze itself so that I could resume gameplay. It's these loading & freezing issues that led me to rate it as a "3" overall.

Even with these issues, if you enjoy playing adventure/mystery games I would still recommend "Daemonica" - just be prepared to deal with the more than occasional loading & freeze-up issues.

P.S. Be sure to save your game often - you never know when death is right around the corner - and, if you die, you have to go back & re-load your last saved game & start from there.

Good Story With Flawed Gameplay

The time is Mideval England. You are Nicholas Farepoynt, the beast hunter. You are Haresh-al Darem, the one who speaks to the dead. You are called to a town where several horrible crimes have been committed. No need to spoil the story, but it is a good one.

An essential part of the game is making potions. This is the flaw in the game. In order to make the potions, you must find herbs. There is a game map of the town and the surrounding area, so you are not lost. You must very carefully search the entire game area for herbs. That is the good news. The bad news is that not all of the herbs are present at the beginning of the game. New herbs are introduced on a random basis during the game. Of course, you do not know when herbs are introduced, where they are located, or what herbs are added. Thus, you must search for herbs again, and again, and again. You will actualy spend more than half of gameplay searching for herbs. This is really too tedious and slows gameplay unacceptably. There are exactly enough of two important herbs, and they are hard to find. You must find all instances of these herbs, or you will not be able to finish the game.

When the game starts you will see the number "30" in the upper right of the screen. This is your health status. During the game you must engage in a number of sword fights. Each time you are nicked, you lose 2-3 points. You can die. If you must take too many "healing potions," you will not have enough herbs to finish the game. Thus, you must replay each sword fight so that you lose only a few points. Also tedious.

The graphics are dark, realistic, and quite artistic. Background music is unobtrusive and appropriate. There is no voice acting, just a bit of voiceover.

The problem is the herbs. Otherwise, "Daemonica" is a three-star game.
