The greatest game

Chessmaster Version 10 is an awsome game. Any level of player from the beginner (me) to the advanced (my son) will enjoy it. It will challenge your brain to think and keep it young. That's good for all of us! It is fun, educational, and will delight you with the many ways it can be played. A powerhouse of a game.

Dont Buy It

The software write protection renders the game useless. I have an ultra lite laptop with no CD drive. I can't use this game on flights because of the "CD requirement".

You guys can stick this kind of game development...

Guess I got lucky

After seeing all of those 1-star reviews, I felt I had to share my experience. It loaded great on my laptop on the first try...and my laptop has a CD-RW drive. I've been playing it for days, and it's the only game that has pushed 'Civilization III: Conquests' off my monitor for that long in over a year...and it looks like it's gonna stay that way! 8^D I'm using it to teach my 7-year-old, and he loves it, too.

About needing the CD in the drive to run the game...I think that's been true of every PC game I've played for years, so CMX seems pretty typical in that regard.

The 4-stars for overall rating is because I think the documentation explaining the Analysis windows could have been more complete. It doesn't really explain what all of the different ratings mean, or how to interpret them to know exactly how I did in my game. I guess that's a question for the CMX forum at the Ubisoft site, huh?

Just one man's opinion.

Ok, but some major flaws.

This game is allright for teaching. Its ok for playing. But there are some flaws. For example, it won't let you copy and they are so obsessed about piracy that it won't let you make a back up copy. Well, note to UBISOFT, I doubt many people find this game worth pirating! I have noticed Josh Waitzkin has some tutorials. I also noticed how ChessMaster sucks up to Waitzkin by putting him among the Grandmasters, even though he is a (relatively) wimpy IM who quit playing chess once he realized he couldn't become an GM. I made Waitzkin and Anand play eachother, and in one game, Waitzkin won! How could a 2400 USCF beat the 2000-2002 FIDE world Champion and the current FIDE blitz Champion?

Overall, I'd say probably get Fritz. This is nothing great.

Don't believe software reviews by random users

I bougth this game on impulse the other day. As usual, when I got home I checked the reviews on Amazon. I was a bit discouraged, but I figured I'll give it a shot. I'm glad I did. I had absolutely no problems installing it, and setting it up. This shows you once again, that when buying a software you really want to check professional reviews, because some people are just technically challenged, and no matter how well a software is written, they will have problems.
As for the game: I don't play chess a lot, so I decided to do the tutorial, which is great. Great exercises, good tips, and the guy's voice is nice. There are plenty board setups with fun pieces, some of which are only available after you completed a certain number of winning games. The Fun corner is great for beginners. It has quick puzzle drills, you can play against low-level opponents, and also has a tutorial geared towards kids.
I'm glad I decided to keep this game. Hours of fun and challenging gameplay for an unbeatable price.

Good, but no match for Fritz

If you want some fun, you may get it. For a serious chess player, Fritz 9 is much better.

Very disappointed!

I also have had very frustating problems playing this game - even on a desktop. It is very inconvenient to have to hunt down and insert the CD everytime you want to play the game. Imagin if you had to do that with all your software!

unexpected surprise

This may be the best eighteen bucks I've ever spent on software. I had no difficulties installing or running this software on my Dell 5160 laptop - none. I hear a lot of whining because people can't copy it. The CD does have to be in your drive in order to use this product. That's okay, when you are running a tutorial, it loads a lot of audio files and I'd rather they stay on a removeable drive instead of clogging my somewhat small 50 gb hard disk.
For the past two months, I have been playing chess, taking Josh Waitzkin's chess academy and just enjoying this software. I'm not the only one who thinks this is a really good product - it has sold somewhere in the vicinity of five million copies.

Downloading patches for Chessmaster 10th Edition

This is to answer my own question below posted on 12/30/2005. I have found the site to download the fixes. It is http://www.ubi.com/US/Downloads/Info.aspx?dlId=698.

After you download and istall the 3 patches, you don't need to have the CD in you CD Rom to play the game.

I have play the game. It is very good. I would give it 5 Star +.

Magdalena Romanillos "Genius is creativity in the extreme", in your review for Chessmaster 10, you said "(although it is very easy to download a cd fix so you do not have to use the CD to play the game)", could you post the file name for the FIX and the process to download it? I went to ubi's web site and only found a patch for Chessmaster 9000.

pleased

The game is good for average and advanced players, the teaching acadamy is awesome. It's probably what makes the game.
