Kind of a "Champions of Norrath Lite"

This is basically a fun, uncomplicated hack-n-slash dungeon crawl. Most everything I play is an RPG because I love exploring new 'worlds' and seeing new things. This is basically a game where you immediately start killing things (spiders) and move quickly on from there. There's nothing wrong with that. In fact, it's kind of nice to have something that doesn't require a lot of thought. I'm also playing 'Zelda: Legend of the Minish Cap" on my Game Boy Advance SP right now, and this game is what I pick up when my day at work has been stressful and I'm not up for a long, involved puzzle-solving stint (I'm a 33 year old single mom who works full time - not a lot of free time). You aren't going to get involved with the characters like you may have with the first Lufia (for the Super Nintendo), or have a huge world to explore like 'Champions of Norrath' for the PS2 or 'Baldur's Gate' for the PC, but you do get to go questing almost immediately, and I've found that it's a pretty easy play, too. I've only died once...and that was because I didn't have the manual with me and didn't know how to access my health potions when I needed them (nothing like getting cornered by a dark sorceror and his goons and fumbling with one's inventory!). I think one of the best aspects of this game is that you can turn it off wherever you are and come back right there. When I save the game and then turn it off, upon powering up the PSP again, I see -exactly- the same scene before me. I don't have to go through a menu to load the game. I don't -think- this is because the game is put on stand-by, because if I'd been doing that I'm sure I'd have run down the battery by now (since I only get to play at night for an hour or so), but I can't say for sure. It does save a heck of a lot of time, though, and lets you maximize those moments waiting for your kids or at the doctor's office. I agree with another post that there will certainly be better RPGs for the PSP someday - but this is certainly something for RPG gamers to buy and play with in the meantime - especially if you're not into all the sports games they seem to have debuted with!

Overall, this game is pretty addictive. I played it for 5 hours straight but never got past the second level. It's a little hard for me, since I'm not a pro gamer myself. I just like this game a lot as an RPG. The graphics are awesome, and the sound effects great. I just wish they would use a little bit more detail on the character because when I'm playing the game I can't really get a good look at his face even with the zoom thing.

Untold Legends = Untold Fun for Some

When I first picked up this game, I was a bit worried since some users rated it as average or poor. Then after getting started with it on my PSP I feared for the worst. The prologue and sketches made me think the game was indeed a dud. To my surprise I couldn't have been more off target! Once I built my character (knight) and started gaining weapons, strength and powers - the game has done a full 360 degree turn. I absolutely love the gameplay. It is a perfect challenge without excess frustration. The "hack and slash" aspect is a total blast! There are some beautiful graphic elements when using magic spells, potions, etc. I would say that the very title of the game is a great analogy. The game offers some "legendary" fun, but will be "untold" by those who are too hasty to discover the strategy behind it. If you just got this one, give it some time to figure out the upgrading of charaters, work with weapons/magic and challenges. You'll find yourself lost in fantastic gameplay, always looking forward to play more!

Great Launch title RPG

Being that I am a big fan of the Bladur's Gate series I was very happy to hear this would be released alongside the PSP. Once you get past the initial wow factor of the PSP, still drooling myself, you'll begin to appreciate the level of detail in the game. The standard fair of weapons and armor is available, each of which can be augmented with crystals that you find within the game. The game also sports over 100 quests! That's alot of gameplay for a handheld game. Certainly larger than anything on the DS.

The game does not have any voiceover but the text and accompanying illustrations certainly add to experience. There is a bit of a load time between levels and as long as you have the time to play in the first place, it should not bother you too much. The sound effects are very effective in conveying dungeons and other surroundings.

I was amazed at the particle effects that add soo much to the very minute details through out the game. The inventory screen is quite uesable although I noticed a bit of pausing once my inventory was full and I was scrolling through my items. Other than that, you're shown a small 3-d representation of yor character and their current loadout. You can make out their haircolor and current armor and move around them to see what they're wearing or carrying.

All in all, for fans of Diablo, Baldurs Gate, and Neverwinter Nights a great game with hours and hours of gameplay.

Solid RPG

I rented this game mainly because I needed a new RPG to start playing. I was extremely suprised at how good this game was; but it does have a few problems. Here's my review.

Graphics: 6.5/10. Cool and interesting creatures, decent looking worlds, the graphics are okay, but nothing super spectacular for a PSP game. There is very, very, very little character customization. Alchemist, Druid, Berserker, or Knight, and then only about 4 different selections for your hair, and 3 for skin color, and there you are. There are also ocassional slowdowns in gameplay too when the music loops. A good thing, though, is that the loading times are reasonable at about 30 seconds.

Sound: 6/10. The sound is just, there. Each creature makes it's own little sound, but there are subtitles, and your character only will make slight grunts. The music can get very annoying, as well. The sound is not really good at all.

Control: 7/10. The only problem with the control really is just the slightly annoying camera angle. In my opinion, this game would have been better just if the camera was better because you could get a better look of what you are doing and where you are going. Also, doing the special abilities isn't the easiest thing either; you use the D-Pad to cycle around, and if you are one of those people who will take a long time to do so, you will probably die.

Fun: 7/10. Untold Legends: Brotherhood of the Blade is a fun little portable RPG with several places to visit, and it's all in good fun. But the biggest problem in this game ( it's really annoying ) is the weight. You will be finding yourself quite often having to go through your inventory and looking at things you want to drop for other things you want to pick up. That's the biggest problem with the game. What is cool, is that you can link up with a friend. ( I don't know for sure if you can play with more than one ) If you need to play a PSP RPG, this is one of your few choices, and I reccomend you try it out, even if it is pretty damn challenging.

7.2/10

Untold Legends was the first game I ever played for the Sony PSP, and frankly, it didn't make for a good first impression. Being an adventure game, I expected a deep, intriguing story line with many interesting characters and a really sinister bad guy. Unfortunately, what I got did not satisfy my craving for a juicy handheld adventure.

U.L starts off letting you choose 1 of 4 characters, a feminine Alchemist, a wild looking Berserker, a well-armored Knight, and a hippie like Druid. Each one specializes in one certain category. Then you distribute a few points among 4 categories. Next you wind up in an inn and fight your first battles. As you progress through the game you are challenged with various simple and straightforward quests, level up, acquire new skills, and find and sell weapons.

Gameplay is very straightforward and boring. Quests are tasteless and uneventful. They usually involve you just running from point A to point B on a mission of "great importance" while fighting legends of bland and basic enemies. Boss battles are nothing special. You can usually kill them in the same time it takes you to kill a few small enemies, and the bosses don't even seem like they should be bosses. They're not big bad bruisers or those enemies you can't help to think are cool. (I.e: Sephiroth: Kingdom Hearts) After you complete a quest you usually get a special piece of equipment that you either already have or is worse than what you have on. To me, there was no real motivation to complete quests. There was no awesome, all-powerful weapon to earn or any secret character to unlock, or even any big mystery to solve. You're basically finishing the game so you can say you did. That might be enough for some gamers, but I prefer to get something out of the games I play.

This aside, the technical aspects of this game are solid. Graphics and character design are done well, and the level design and weapons are very detailed. The only problem I see from a technical standpoint is frequent loading. Every time you enter a new area, you sit through roughly a 15-second load. It becomes very annoying when you accidentally go into wrong areas and have to wait. This isn't something that would totally kill a game, but it is an inconvenience.

I wouldn't strongly suggest this game, more cons than pros I think. I think we are going to have to wait a little for the PSP to produce some strong RPG's because this one doesn't cut it for me.

Repetitive repetitive repetitive, but what can i say it is a good title for the PSP and won a place in my videogame lirary, I love rpgs and this is a fine game to get. I didn't like the graphics and the sound, but it is kind of fun but it gets BORING (spell it right) after a while, but you get new weapons and armor which is cool with over 20 hours of gameplay this is one you will like to take with you on long journeys.

Diablo for PSP

This game is pretty much Diablo for the PSP. Which is saying a lot. The graphics are detailed and easy to follow. There are plenty of levels and lots of different monsters to chop. As you get into higher levels, you have to think more and ginsu less. The controls are mostly intuitive, and are close enough to just start playing at first and RTFM later when things get tricky. This game makes me start thinking of my PSP as a PS2/XBox replacement rather than a GameBoy competitor. Why hassle with the consoles when I can play this on the bus, on the pot, on a plane. etc. The XBox360 and PS3 will have to offer *significantly* better/different games for them to make me decide to get one of them rather than more PSP games.

I haven't put it down yet....

...and I think I am close to being done. If Sony allowed "infrastructure" connections, this would be a much better game. I don't ride a schoolbus with a bunch of kids who all play this game (I have not ridden a bus for over 30 years) so the wi-fi feature is useless to me.

So far, every maze in the game can be negotiated with a "follow the right wall" feature. The controls are fairly simple - the only one that is impossible to use is "block" which requires a two finger chord (right and circle). I would argue that it should be swapped with weapons change (right and X) at least as an option.

The good news is that as a druid, I've never had to block, even once, to win a fight - there are few places I have not been able to get through by pumping heal potions - and those simply have to be approached slowly.

Druids get pets (I have no idea if the other classes get pets). At low levels, they get a tumbleweed that will simply annoy and occupy the mob, while at high levels they get a tempest that will actually fight and will take out annoyance mobs automatically. There are some deathtraps - you can get swarmed by so many hard hitting mobs that you won't survive - there is a place where the "rhinos" swarm you, in particular - once you get five of them on you, you might as well not waste your potions - you can try a spell, but you'd have to be stupidly lucky to get an "instant death" on two of them. It is always a matter of tactics - many of those situations can be approached with arrows.

I was worried that this would be a game where shooting skill would men life or death - but if you spend some time leveling, you can pretty much take any boss with the right tactics - for some it is shooting at a distance and for others it is engagement. But arrows aim semiautomatically (better if you have higher dex, I think). It is not a game where you set your actions by turns, but it is a game where your shooting skill probably won't matter.

I'm having fun playing this game - while it is a bit repetitive, I'm having fun watching the story unfold and I'm wondering how it will turn out.

Diablo II/Baulder's Gate Clone

Do you really like Diablo II or Baulder's Gate Dark Alliance? I mean like as in, its your favorite game, the first thing you put into your system, and you simply can't stop playing it? Then you'd love this game. Otherwise, skip it.

Untold Legends is simply a very standard Diablo II clone that offers absolutely nothing new to the genre. The game starts off with a very plain scrolling text intro, where you discover your character is chosen to protect a newly elected dignitary from harm. Not five minutes into your new position then, big surprise, total chaos insues. So strap on your sword (or other weapon of choice), press the 'X' button a lot, and drink a health potion whenever you don't feel like waiting around to heal.

There's nothing in this game that has not been done better in other games that have come before it. From the vanilla plot, to the standard armor, weapons, item customization, and bad guys. The only instances where the game showed any real glimer of originallity where in a few of the 'boss' fights, where one had to use a bit more intelligence then smashing 'X' as fast as possible. Had this not been a launch title I'd expect it wouldn't have gotten any attention at all.

If you're really into the Dungeon Crawler style of game, my advice is to wait until late summer when the PSP has come into its own with more releases, and pick it up in the bargin bin.
