Mediocre and insanely difficult

2 Rating: 2, Useful: 13 / 13

X-Men: Next Dimension is a somewhat enjoyable game. Any X-Men fan will be happy to play as over 24 different characters ripped straight from the comics, with powers intact.

All characters have multiple outfits and are highly detailed. The graphics overall in the game aren't outstanding, but they're decent enough. The special effects on the powers are the icing on the cake, standing out above everythign else in the game. The environment is interactive and players can be thrown through floors, cielings, windows and walls to new areas of the level.

That's about it for the great features though. Probably the most troubling aspect about this game is the fact that it has virtually NO SOUND EFFECTS whatsoever while you fight. You spend most of the time watching you characters throw punches and kicks at one another with only the music going, and occasionally you might hear a punch connect or a character groan in pain. Otherwise there is complete silence while you fight. I'm not sure how that slipped past the Quality Assurance testers unless they were all deaf. I thought it was just the XBox, since just about every XBox game seems to be plagued with sound problems, but it wasn't. The game just lacks sound effects.

Another troubling aspect is the difficulty...now i'm not one for easy games, in fact I hate games that are so easy you can blow through them in a 30 minutes sitting...but Next Dimension transcends the boundaries of high difficulty. I haven't played a fighting game this hard in a long, long time. And while a challenge is certainly welcome, there is a definite difference between challenge and insanity. The difficulty in this game, unfortunately, falls into the insanity category. While you probably won't have to cheat your way to victory, the only way to assure that you win is to spend HOURS in the practice mode with every character. Since you are forced to play as different characters as the game progresses in Story Mode, you must know how to use each character. And even then...the game can become so frustrating at times that its best that you turn it off and put it on the shelf for a few days. It can be fun at times, but most of the time succeeds at being terribly difficult.

The control is pretty bad...and the clunky junk that is the XBox controller does not help matters. Special moves are straightforward but difficult to perform because of the responsiveness of the controls. If you have a special kind of gamepad from a third party developer, use that instead. They typically have better D-pads.

Overall, the game just seems rushed, or incomplete. The lack of sound effects, the crazy difficulty and the lack of options and bad control just harm the game's fun factor. There is plenty to unlock, and there is a decent story tagged along on the game, but in the end this game is mediocre in every sense of the word. It will only appeal to die-hard X-Men fans, such as myself. If you are interested in the game, give it a rent. You might like it...its not a horrible game, it just could've been alot better.

I'm going to have to disagree with Cyberaug

I found this game very amusing. I believe you will too.
Cyberaug , it's not the A.I. that is hard. It's the fact that you [arent any good]. I let a little kid play the game on easy, and he managed to do quite well.
The graphics are great and so are the combos you can perform. There are so many different things you can do with each character including all their superpowers. The combos are relatively easy to perform along with the super combos. There is a "Move" option you can view when you pause the game that tells all the moves for the person you are using.
The game play is also interesting. Just like Dead or Alive 3 you can knock people through objects and different environments (Way more than dead or alive), and actually throw items with you hands or psychic ability. The detail to the environments are amazing. There are stages when you are fighting in a hologram place, and the surroundings change right before you. You could be fighting in a greek coliseum then it gets wavey, and your in the middle of the desert, then in a green paradise, etc. Also the way they have the matches are different. There is Arcarde mode when you are just one person. Like any other fighting game structure. Then in story mode there actually a story. Sort of like the movie or other games (not fighting). You can't fight with one person to beat story mode. You have a selection of 4 fighters that go to the place your fighting next. Say you're at the X-men mansion, and 4 x-men take of in the x-men jet to a location. You can only be those 4 x-men for that situation. Once you win there the forces attack somewhere else or someone gets kidnapped, and must call on another group to get there in time.
I can honestly say that I like this game better than Dead or Alive 3, because there is just so much more to it. So many things that go on, and the fact that there is a story to it, and not just travel to a place and fight this person, etc. You actually have to team up with Magneto and his gang of supervillians to fight an even greater enemay. So at some points you Actually fight as magneto and his gang.
The game gets alot better with time as you play it, and learn the moves and combos and unlock items like the xmen original uniforms (like the yellow one wolverine wears, it takes place after the movie and there are wearing the movie clothes). X-men is like a song that you don't like at first, but when you hear it a few more times it becomes one of you favorites. So keep playing it even if you don't like it at first. You will be suprise how addicting it gets.

X-Men kicks Mortal Kombat !

Wow ! Hard to believe how different all of our opinions are on this game. I wanted a good fighting game. I bought this game and Mortal Kombat. I have been a big fan of Mortal Kombat since it first came out, what 10 years ago ? Anyway, the graphics of the X-men game are much better than Mortal Kombat and the controls are much more intuitive. You do not have to be an expert at video games to beat the story here or to unlock characters. Pay attention though, when you are battling certain Sentinels you only have 50 seconds to defeat them no matter how much more health you may have than them. Finally, the story is pretty cool for anyone who likes the X-men comic book. I stopped reading the series 10 years ago, but I enjoyed the game and found it fit in with memories I had of the comic. The only warnong I would say is that this is a pure fighting game. If you are looking for puzzles or strategy, you will not like this game.

Weak-Men

X-men The Next Dimension for the Xbox is a fighting game where you get to fight with your favorite X-man character. The major ones included are: Cyclops, Jean, Wolverine, Night Crawler, Storm and many more which can be unlocked when you beat the games. Your characters can do basic punch, kick, combo moves and
use their special powers. You can play by yourself or with a friend in versus mode. I hated this game because the controls were sluggish, the animation looked choppy and weird. The sound is the worst ever in a fighting game! The hits sound like Tiny slap sounds. All of the combo attacks suck, they feel very generic. I'm an X-men fan, but this game is horrible. Save your money and buy Dead or Alive (the bomb).

Pros:
+X-men characters
+good graphics
+versus a friend

Cons:
-sluggish controls
-terrible sound effects
-generic music
-choppy animations
-fighting techniques suck
-retarded A.I.

Poor fighting game

I was really looking forward to an X-Men fighting game. Unfortunately it is a very poor game. While the graphics are good the rest is bad. Sure there are lots of characters but the stiff movements look and play bad. The AI is outrageous on this game, even on easy - the computer can do tons of damage while you struggle just to hit. And many of your hits never do damage. It is a very frustrating game. It is on par with old fighting games - very old ones. Even the 3D is limited. Very sad for X-Box. If you think you are interested in this game, do your self a favor and RENT it first - don't waste[your money] to find out how bad it is.

Better than you've been led to believe

X-Men: Next Dimension is most likely the first game I have played that was based on the X-Men comic that did not disappoint me. Being old enough to remember most of the incarnations that the X-men have had on various consoles and the PC (X-Men: Ravages of Apocalypse for example or X-Men for the original Nintendo system), I had fairly low expectations. Moreover, I've never really been drawn to playing fighting games because of the low replay value.

X-Men: Next Dimension (X:ND) was a pleasant surprise however. A solid 3D fighting game with equally solid graphics, it is a frequently played addition to my collection of Xbox titles. Let me say up front that this is no Dead or Alive 3 in respects to graphics. It does, however, have strong graphics with excellent effects for the powers.

The powers... here is what makes this one stand out from the pack of fighting games available. True to the comic each hero or villain has an array of moves and abilities available to them in stages, not entirely unlike Tao Feng's chi system. Your available power builds as you fight, enabling progressively more powerful abilities. It should be noted that while activating these powers involves a combo move unique to that character, these moves typically involve intuitive key combinations and not the long strings of button mashing found in many fighting games.

The story mode in X:ND is written by experienced X-Men comic writers. It is superior to the "stories" that string together many fighting games (a minor issue I have with DOA3), and is compelling enough to make you play it through to its conclusion. I did so in about 5 hours and thought only about an hour had passed. There are the standard versus, survival and practice modes as well as other features and add ins.

On the down side, I do wish that the game was more reasonable about unlocking the special characters. While some aren't terribly difficult to unlock (Bastion, Bishop and Psylocke come to mind), there are others that are nearly impossible without cheating. Additionally, I'm a bit spoiled by DOA3 - I'd have loved to see the X-Men rendered with that level of excellence. Perhaps, if there should be a sequel, we'll get those refinements.

All said and done, this one does not provide the disappointment you might have seen referred to by other avid gamers in this forum. Give it a rental if you are hesitant, and I think you'll see that this one is worth the very reasonable Amazon.com price.

I understand a lot of people didn't like this game, but I did. When it first came out I bought it and loved it. Me and my friends played it all the time. We couldn't get enough of it. Now three years later after trading in my GC version I've bought it again for the Xbox. I must admit it still looks pretty good and the controls are far better than the GC version. I also like the addition of Pyro. Now I must state the obvious set backs of this game; for one the fighting is fun but not nearly as in depth as games like DOA or Soul Calibur. Two the graphics are a bit dated. Three the game isn't much fun by yourself after extended play. And finally there are some small glitchs. In conclusion this is a decent fighter and awsome X-men game. Ah this game brings back so many memories...

I played this game and I thought it was DA BOMB!! I am a big fan of X-men from reading the comics and when i played this and saw many familiar characters. If you like these kinds of fighting games with immersive story styles you will love this game. All the moves are easy to master and SOME of the locked characters are easy to unlock. I played the Xmen mutant academy for the playstation and thought it was much similiar to this. I highly recommend this game for allX-Men fans.

D rated game.

This is barely passable to be rated as a game.Theres good reasons why games and comic books should not mix and this is one of them.
In the game for some characters the player can't do some of the moves as good as the CPU, and the moves do not respond to the D-pad on time.
And there are several glitches in the game as well for instance; As I was in practice mode in some arenas the player or opponent can fall threw walls or in some areas where there are big holes in the floor where you can actually walk on them and not fall, or get trapped in a wall. And as if that was not bad enough they did a pore job on the blocking move, it too dose not respond on time. They have where you can reconfigure your controls on the game (Yeah, a lot of good that dose.) But you still don't have the blocking move to where you don't have to strain the hell out of your fingers just to do one stupid move.
And as for the affects, its a joke and I'll give you an example; In the game Blood Roar Extreme, the lighting in the game looks far more real as to X-men Storm's lighting balls, they look more like balls of yarn. And there fighting stances are just flat out bad. Some players can float just over there heads witch doesn't make sense because not only that, you can't really hit them anymore and it gives your enemy an open shot at you.

To sum it all up, X-men next dimension was just another sloped together, slapped a label on, copied, and ready to make a buck off of it. They don't care about making a good quality product. Just as long as they get your money. And did I mention that you can't save your progress in the game?

Worst Comic Book Game EVER!

This game is pure crap. The graphics are not outstanding by any stretch of the imagination, the controls are awkward, and the difficulty setting is frustrating. There are times your opponent starts pounding on you, and you arn't even able to get a hit in before the match is over. The game CAN be beat, but it's not worth the time you'll need to invest to do so. I was really hoping for this game to be more, but it isn't.
