A Fun Shooter.

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 6 / 6

Constantine is a third person shooter based on the DC Comic series HELLBLAZER: John Constantine and the movie Constantine .The game has voice acting done by Keanu Reeves. Its like watching a movie and playing along also.Basicly your job is to kill demons and find certain holy artifacts ,locate keys for opening locked doors and find hidden areas using true sight,etc.etc. And sometimes you'll need to travel into the HELL realm to find items or complete a level. Its a Good verse Evil storyline, although Constantine is niether. The controls are descent, Constantine while unarmed walks a little buttery but I did notice he's walks smoother while armed with a weapon. The way Constantine walks reminds me of Hitman games sort of.Constantine jumps automaticly when needed and climbs areas when needed as well, mostly your just on foot at a slow joggers pace. You have the ability to get closer view third person by clicking right analog stick or first person view in the "true sight" by pressing X button.Depending on your controller figuration it may differ.Basicly there's three modes of view.... Third person,Third person closer, and finally First person in "true sight" mode.True sight mode is Constantine's ability to see demons inside of normal looking people, the ability to locate hidden areas marked by a special marker and you can see in the dark, simular to Riddick's sight in Cronicles Of Riddick Butcher Bay.You also have special magic abilites to perform special attacks against demons, like "Storm Crow" which is a lightning attack ,"Hunger" which launches a plague of flies on targeted demon,"Exorcism" which forces demons called bile-riz out of there's human hosts,"Protection" which protects Constantine from all attacks for a short period of time,"Confusion" which bestows Constantines appearance on the targeted demon for a limited time causing surrounding demons to attack the transformed demon,"Gargoyle" which transforms surrounding demons into stone which then can be shattered by a projectile,"Demon Leech" which causes demons to get damage from there own attacks and the only spell that can hurt Balthazar, all these spells use a certain amount of magical power which is replenished by defeated demons, you get certain magical spells as you progress in the game also you can find them in hidden areas located by your "true sight".Constantine has the ability to travel between hell and the regular world by finding a puddle or pool of water and casting a "Gateway" spell ,he then can travel into the HELL realm ,the hell realm is filled with flames and there's a constant hurricane like wind with beat upold cars flying over your head and big fireballs falling from the sky .It looks like a beat up city where everything is in a reddish color. There are demons spawning into both realms to try to kill you .The "Title" credits of the game are really kool ,a Flying demon called a "Seplative" Flies in and picks you up for a ride nicely done. The graphics are nice nothing really stands out but I do have an "S" cable so keep that in mind. The Hell Realm is pretty kool looking lots of heavy wind and flying embers in the air. There's a couple puzzle type things to solve, but not very many in the game If I remember correctly I think there's a total of Three. This game is mostly a shooter with faith based type weapons and you get these certain weapons as you advance in the game that resemble a Shotgun which shoots blessed shells and if you shoot into a wall you'll notice the shells come out in the form of a cross, a Flamethrower that has liquid dragon fire, a Crossbow that fires reusable iron tipped bodkins, my fav the Nailgun that fires reusable 6 inch nails ,and double fisted magnum type guns that fire stones from the road to Damscus. Also Constantine has the ability to perform Unarmed Melee attacks in which the demon flies back Matrix style after being killed in a Unarmed Melee attack, the melee's are simple one button attacks. You get health and magic upgrades if you can find hidden areas by using your "true sight" and Also you can get upgrades for your weapons such as exploding rounds and flame arrows. The "Behemoth" Boss can get tough sometimes, you fight him 3 times in the game, but just check your notes It'll give you tips on killing the bosses.Constantine is not a very hard game.I played it on MEDIUM mode and finished the game in 3 days. There EASY,MEDIUM,and, HARD mode.Constantine is a short game with only 14 levels that arent very big.I wish the game was longer. The game just ended thats was it ...no big ending scene,But I have to say there is alot of movies that connect the levels. All in all Constantine is a solid marriage between storyline CG movies and good gameplay,But its a little too short, they couldv'e added a few more levels ,before you know it your done. And there's no big replay value once you beat it.But you do get bonus cards while playing the game you find little hidden cards while exploring levels then after playing that level you can go to menu screen and see bonus items like COMIC covers and cutscene CG movies ,interviews with cast etc.CHEATS: Infinite Ammo: While Playing Press back button to 'Journal Screen' then press,L-R-L-X-Y-X-X-Y-Y-X-Y-X-X-Y-Y.if code entered correctly screen will flash..Infinite Spell Energy: At Journal screen press, L-R-R-L-L-R-R-L-Y-Y...screen will flash if entered correctly .GOOD LUCK.

Underrated Survival-Horror Gem!

I've seen several lukewarm reviews for this game on a couple Web sites like IGN.com and I almost decided not to buy it, but I went ahead and took the plunge anyway and I was really glad I did! I've read some of the Constantine comics, enough to know who the character is, and I liked the movie all right. Not the best film I'd ever seen, but fun atmosphere. (Keanu's acting is always a little flat but the movie was really more about the effects and creepy occult stuff to me.) Anyway some of what I really love about this game is that it feels a lot like classic survival-horror stuff like Resident Evil and it has a significantly different plot from the movie, though the major characters are the same. (Makes me wonder if perhaps the videogame designers were working from an early version of the script.) Either way, I really dig this game. Great art direction and level design, lots of nice explanations in the journal give you back stories on the demons and artifacts, and the music is pretty great too. Cutscenes are nicely rendered, though the characters move a little stiffly (but even that makes me think warm nostalgic thoughts about Resident Evil games past.) The Easter Egg hunts you go on to find the hidden bonus cards are addictive and the extras aren't bad, though I really wish it had included an actual readable e-comic on the disc or more interviews. The comic scans are OK but nothing to write home about. All in all, though, it's a great survival-horror game and lots of fun, though I agree it's a little short. (Personally I extended the gameplay by playing through again on the most difficult setting, which made things a little more challenging.)

Some minor flaws are negated by an overall fun game

The game is based on the Constantine movie, which I thoroughly enjoyed despite some sketchy plot points (that aren't present in the game because of a more straightforward and in some ways better storyline) and I even found myself liking Keanu's performance, despite taking some of the loathesome personality away from the character. Anyway, here's my game review.
The story is pretty good, and like I said, really scores for a much more understandable and straightforward interpretation of the new Constantine world first created in the movie. Don't get me wrong, it's not a perfect story, and you should read a couple of reviews for the game or the movie to the gist of the plot so that you know what's going on, which makes for a motivating game experience. I'll give you a little backstory, most of which is not included in the game: John Constantine is a gruff, selfish chain-smoker who was born with True Sight, the ability to see demons and angels in the "half-breed" human forms (and in the game, he has infrared vision that can see supernatural marks) which eventually drove him to insanity and suicide. Since suicide is a form of murder, John went to Hell...where he stayed for all of two minutes before he somehow escaped back to Earth. However, when John returned to Earth, I'm guessing he knew that his second death would net him an eternity in Hell, as the hole out would be "boarded up", so to speak. So he uses his second chance to hunt down and "deport" demons back to Hell, hoping to win enough favor with God to be accepted into Heaven upon his second death. While this element of his story is not vital to the game, it's still worth knowing if you want a reason for why this guy risks his life to kill every rogue demon he can. Before we go any further, the "Hollywood Christianity" doctrine that underlies the game and movie is that God and the devil made a wager for the souls of all mankind; they could only use half-breeds angels and demons to influence or tempt humans to good or bad. The first few minutes of the second level (the first prologue level netting you your Witch's Curse pistols) you find a rogue band of demons tearing through a parking lot behind a building. It is made clear by John's exclamations that demons on earth (in other words, direct contact with the human world and not just an influence) is a direct violation of the pact between God and the devil. Throughout the game you will seek to uncover Hell's true intentions and take down legions of demons in order to save all of mankind.
Along the way, you will acquire new weapons ("Primary and Secondary Artifacts"), spells, and power-ups. Though these will be outlined in your game manual (if you got one with the game), I'll give you some tips and stuff for in-game situations. The first guns you get are powerful, medium firing rate pistols known as Witch's Curse(s). These tend to be some of the more fun guns to shoot, but they tend to run out of ammo after a certain point in the game, and it takes a while to get any more, so conserve the use of this gun only when you need some a mode of attack that is neither slow nor weak, but squarely in the middle. Now I'm not sure the exact order that you get the rest of the weapons in, so I'll just continue with the Holy Shotgun. Ok, it's the stupidest name possible, but it is a good gun. Though inherently slow, it does better damage per shot than any weapon (except maybe the Flamethrower) and is good for blasting things back to give yourself some room. The next weapon is the Purger, a crossbow. This weapon should only be used against the flying demons you'll face, called Seplavites. The Purger can kill Seplavites in one hit, but is next to useless against other demons, as it has an extremely low fire rate which translates to a lot of misses, and it takes way too many hits to kill a demon with it. One of my favorites is the Dragon's Breath Flamethrower. It fires a steady stream of flames, gradually annihilating anything in its line of fire, and the ammo is depleted proportionate to how long you hold the fire button. This weapon shouldn't be used much because ammo is sparse and you need to save them for the Behemoth Demons, whose only weakness is their three tiny heads. Their heads being small, they're extremely hard to hit with other weapons like the Crucifier, Witch's Curse pistols, the Holy Shotgun, etc., so use the Flamethrower, which can hit all three at once with its broad range of fire and doesn't waste all the other weapons' ammo on misses (and even the large required amount of hits to down a Behemoth). It's perfectl suited for this demon, so conserve your ammo (there's not much ammo for the Flamethrower) for fights with this demon. The last gun we'll look at is the most unique: the Crucifier. It's basically a machine gun: super fast and accurate. You can recover the ammo (they're nails) by running over it and picking it off (using your True Sight ability, you can see the nails). This weapon has various upgrades, like Flaming Nails and Exploding Nails (which are absolutely killer against the first of two bosses you fight on the last level) others, but they seem to come and go, almost like they kicked in when they wanted to.
Your secondary Artifacts, which can be toggled with the white button, come in this order. You start out with a couple Holy Water Bombs, which are grenades that when thrown, burn off a half-breed demon's human skin and makes them much more vulnerable. It also pisses them off and they start shooting black energy at you which isnt' terribly harmful, but is still potent. Then you get your most useful secondary item, the reusable (if you haven't lost it inside of a prison cell or a pit in Hell or something) Amityville Screech Beetle, which when thrown near enough to a demon, which stun for about five seconds. This is most useful against the Impaler demons, huge hulking brutes whose only weakness is a green spot on their back. Stun them with the Beetle and then go behind them, get a good aim with any weapon except maybe a Flamethrower and fire; it will instantly kill them. The last and most powerful secondary Artifact is the Moses Shroud, which is like a cloth, which when you light it in fire will explode and kill all the demons in sight. It only works one time for all three or so you get throughout the game, so use them wisely. I've never tried it against any bosses, so you may want to see how that works.
As for your third mode of attack, spells, you get probably your best one first. It's fast, it kicks butt, and it doesn't use all that much force energy. It's Storm Crow, which is basically calling down lightning on most every demon in sight. It's good for annihilating a horde of demons closing in. The Exorcism spell can only be used on possessed (dead) humans and rips the demon from its human shell, where it crawls on the floor, merely a legless demon who crawls around everywhere. You can then stomp it to death with the A button or blast with a projectile blast. This spell makes it way easier to kill a possessor because it takes like 5 or 6 hits in rapid succession to kill a possessed human, whereas it takes 1 or 2 when they have been exorcised. The other spell I got was Demon Leech, which I only used against a boss whose only weakness was the Leech spell. Somehow, I checked every corner I found for spells, power-ups, etc. and yet I missed like 3 of 6 or so spells, so unfortunately I can't tell you how the more complex and interesting spells work cause I haven't played with them yet (hope to buy it soon and get those spells). The spells are initiated by hitting Y after you've switched to the spell you want using the right and left D-Pad controls and hitting the button sequence correctly within the time limit. You get it off in time, the spell goes and fun ensues.
Although I've already gone over some of it, the gameplay isn't terribly varied or orignal, but it does have a ton of button options, unlike most other games I've seen. You can blow past enemies with your guns, stun, weaken, or annnihilate them with secondary artifacts, use spells, punch demons out with your holy brass knuckles, or just bash them over the head with any of your equipped weapons. You can use True Sight to find clues and see in the prevalent darkness, and hit A to move stuff out of your way or to navigate through an area. There are even some extra stuff in the controls, like clicking a thumbstick (at least for one control scheme) makes John do a 180 degree turn in the blink of an eye, which is useful for a quick relatiation against backstabbing enemies. There are two control schemes, Occult and Demonic, and I don't remember which one I picked, but the one that assigned your True Sight ability to the X button is much easier and better. There are three difficulty levels: Easy, Medium (or is it Normal?) and Hard. I beat Medium in about 20 hours or so. I would advise doing that one or Hard, because Easy is welll...easy as crap.
The graphics and atmosphere are spectular, in a spooky, gruesome, dark and freaky way. The cutscene graphics were very, very good and John looks even better in gameplay than cutscenes. There are tons of amounts of darkness in this game, making you feel somewhat vulnerable the whole way through. Poltergeist events such as basketballs bouncing idly by, and manhole covers exploding in front of you are just some of the creepy things that add to the atmosphere of the unknown. The level designs are generally very good, with lots of puzzles and obstacles laid out in them.
The voice-acting was dominated by Keanu Reeves impressionists, who got off some good lines, but most of which were Keanu's in the first place. The impersonators sound a bit over the top sometimes, but no biggie there. As for the rest of sound, the music seemed to consist a light tympony (percussion) sequence whenever enemies appeared and maybe a horn or two to indicate peril, so I didn't really notice the soundtrack. The sound effects were pretty good, a sort of explosive sound for Witch's Curse, a chucking kind of sound for your Shotgun, a rattatatat for your Crucifier, etc. and the environmental sounds that seemed to just, well, sound were creepy and mood inducing.
I would advise at least a rental to see if this game is for you. Good four-star game that didn't get a five star mainly because of somewhat lackluster approach to fighting (gets repetitive sometimes). However, the multiple things you can do: fight, solve multiple and varied puzzles, move stuff to avoid obstacles make this an overall fun experience. Rock on, John!

Not bad, be fair now..

I think people are being unfair to this game. Ok, maybe it's not anything unique but still a fun couple of days. I personally finished the game in 2days, unfortunately the game does not have any replay value. There's only the main campaign to play. If they had put a survival mode, or just plain old fun 'kill all demons' mode, it'd be a lot fun to play. Graphics are good, sound effects are ok. I had thought hard and long before buying this game but I'm glad I bought it in the end but keep in mind this game is not 'halo' material, you will not see milestone advancements in this game, just think of it as a 2-3days good time.

BORING

This has to be one of the most boring, pointless games ever created. The graphics are almost as poorly done as the basic mechanics of the game. You wander aimlessly around in a world of blocky graphics and stupid lurching monsters, looking for ridiculous clues and puddles of water, yes I said puddles of water. You have a special sight ability which makes the graphics even fuzzier and blocky than without it. I have no idea why they would bother with a camera angle that either has you at truly third person or a few inches closer so you can look over the main character's shoulder. What is the point of that? In fact, what is the point of this game...oh, that's right, they released a movie so of course, there should be a game. If you are looking for a good horror/survival game, skip this title and get Bloodrayne 2. Trust me, rent this game before you spend your money...it's not even worth the rental fee.

Not Worth The Money I Paid

I honestly thought that this would be a fun game to play, but much like Gamer Gamer, I found this to be a really boring game.
The graphics were extremely blocky, the movement I felt, should be more fluid. The game itself was hard to navigate, and using True Sight made it even harder to navigate.
All in all, the game was extremely frustrating, boring, and not at all engrossing. I eventually traded it in for BloodRayne 2, which I think was a much better investment.
Don't waste your money on a game so poorly done as this one.

Dont waste your money. There is good reason why this game isn't that popular. The controls are extremely poor, the camera angles are horrible, and the monsters aren't as scary as they should be. I gave up playing this game after about an hour - not because it was hard, but because it was THAT boring. I bought it new, and gave it away the next day. Gaming should be fun, so don't bother.
