The Darkness Rules!

You play the role of Jackie Estacado, an up and coming mafioso in the New york Franchetti family. But on the night of your 21st birthbay your life changes forever, you are double crossed by your "uncle" paulie the violent don of the Franchetti family who is more interested in money than the old ways of the cosa nostra. You are on your way to exact your revenge when the power of an ancient sentient being called The Darkness awakens inside you and thats when things get really interesting...... The game is based on the graphic novel by top cow but it doesnt play out like a comic book game think of it almost as a Max Payne fps. Although the gameplay area is quiet big the gameplay is pretty linear the side missions aren't really worth completing. But apart from these shortcomings The Darkness is an absolute joy to play whether your eating victims hearts or impaling them with The Darkness Tenticle the game looks and sounds beautiful it has some of the best graphics i have seen on the ps3 so far, but its in 1080p full high definition that this game really comes into its own, blacks are deliciously dark and the picture is so sharp it could cut you.The gameplay takes a little bit of getting used to, the first couple of levels seem a little difficult as you dont have the power of the darkness yet, but as soon as you get it you are treated to a really cool cinematic and things tilt in you favour. But just because you have the power of The Darkness it does not mean you can just run around like a lunatic killing everyone, you must stay out of the light either by shooting light bulbs or destroying street lights with The Darkness tenticle, this can get a bit tiresome after destroying 54000 light bulbs!!!! overall The Darkness is a fun game to play and the story will keep you interested in the games and the guns in the game are pretty cool as you can dual wield most weapons, also you have really cool darness abilities like being able to summon Darklings your own personal demons to do your bidding or you can create a vortex to suck your enemies into it. I think The Darkness is the first great game of many to come on the PS3, Come into The Darkness......

Has potential, but falls short

The Darkness is a fairly typical story driven FPS with alot of intriguing elements added into it that make it a worthwhile play for someone who really digs the genre.
Other have mentioned the good parts of Darkness, being the setting, sense of immersion, etc., and while agreeing with most of these I will quickly highlight my problems with the game.
1.) Graphics - good but not fantastic, PS3 version has no excuse to not have superb anti-aliasing. Pure laziness on the developers part.
2.) Gameplay - Bad guys tend to be of the "stand in one place and shoot" variety. Bad guy AI is severely lacking, you won't see anyone take cover or flank or anything here, dissapointing coming from games like Resistance and S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
3.) Controls - Why, why why, no keyboard/mouse support? Any developer that releases an FPS on PS3 that does not have Keyboard/Mouse support is going to get griped at from me, plain and simple.

I have never written a review but felt compelled by my disappointment. This game is bad, very bad. The whole concept is ridiculous, you spend more time shooting lights than people. It was so boring I literally could not play it past the first few levels. Save your money, don't buy this game!

This is a good game for people that are tired of run of the mill FSP's. It has a good story told through cutscreens while loading which is pretty cool. Graphics are excellent and the gameplay is good also. I dont rate games based on who makes them, I rate them on how good they are. This is a game everyone with a PS3 should add to thier big name list.

the designers of the game decided that I MUST learn to shoot with my middle finger. I decided NOT to waste my time and to return the game. anyway, the plot and gameplay is idiotic.

Embrace the Darkness!!!

This was not a game I originally was dying to play, but after Lair was pushed back, I was really in the mood for a new game, so I decided to give this one a try. The graphics on the PS3 version are GORGEOUS!!! I was expecting this to be a fairly mindless killing spree, but was surprised to find a great story, and characters that I actually cared about. You are also given the option of taking on several mini-quests during the game, similar to those of Oblivion. While these don't really add to the story, they do reward you with some pretty neat bonus features. Some of the complaints about this game I've heard are 1. very offensive language. 2. Darkness powers not that great 3. game too short. All I can say is that the language is in keeping with the setting, since most of the people you are involved with are in the mob. Anyone who says the darkness powers are not that great do NOT know what they are talking about. They do take some time to master, but once you do, they are AWESOME!! While I did finish the game in a week, I thought the length was just right for the story. One thing I've not heard anyone mention, was something that I just happened across while walking through a subway station during the game. I noticed a music video playing on a TV that was in a shopping cart beside a homeless woman asleep on a bench. When I stopped to watch the video, I noticed that I could change the stations. From that point on, I noticed that many of the TV's you encounter offer this. You can watch actual cartoons, music videos, and even big clips from classic movies. While in the girlfriend's apartment to celebrate Jackie's birthday, if you simply stay, you can watch the 1st 30 minutes of To Kill a Mockingbird. I am currently playing back throught the game to try to catch a lot of the other TV programs I missed, that I noticed in the game credits at the end. If you are not offended by harsh language, and some pretty bloody violence, this game will NOT disappoint!!! Go out and buy it right now.

Save your money

I picked up this game along with Resistance when I first bought my PS3 after reading a few shining reviews in the gaming mags. According to these reviews, the real selling point of this game is the engrossing plot. Unfortunately, I was never able to enjoy the plot because of the rediculous gameplay. The whole "avoid the light" thing is interesting, but the real flaw here is the game is TOO real to life. There are dozens of street lamps on every map and you'll have to pause every 20 feet to shoot them all out to avoid losing power, nevermind that there are hordes of gangsters trying to cap you all the while. The "darkness powers" are supposed to make this whole process a little bit easier, but aren't really that effective. Don't even get me started on the uselessness of the darklings, who die almost instantly after touching any light whatsoever.

Ignoring all of the things that are supposed to make this game unique, it doesn't even stand up as a decent first person shooter (just to give you an idea, aiming is facilitated by a rediculous red dot in the middle of the screen). There's no effective way to manage your weapons, so when you run out of ammo with one gun the next one just pops randomly into your hands out of some invisible queue. The idea here was that they were trying to get rid of the "heads-up display" that can tend to block a lot of the action in first person shooters. Unfortunately, it just ended up being a big mess, and it's not like there are no menus involved at all here. Every time you get a new objective you must enter a menu to figure out what you're supposed to be doing. It's not that big of a deal, a lot of games do this, though I do find it somewhat annoying. The real problem with this setup is the fact that the font they used is so tiny it's almost unreadable on a standard definition TV. If you're like the mojority of PS3 owners out there who haven't yet made the switch to high-def, you'll be doing a lot of squinting.

The one good thing I can say about this game is the graphics are pretty good, but there are a lot of games out there with good graphics AND gameplay. As for the supposedly wonderful plot, it boils down to every lame mobster cliche in the book with some tacked on occult powers. If you must experience "The Darkness", just pick up the comics. On the other hand, if you want to spend 20 minutes sneaking into little Suzie's bedroom to unplug her nightlight so your minions won't be incinerated on the street below, by all means, play the game.
