If you use a "lefty" controller layout (move right thumbpad, aim left thumb pad), you're out of luck with this game - there is NO option for a lefty layout. Call of Duty Finest Hour has this option, same with both Halo games and Medal of Honor.
Because of this I found the game utterly unplayable. Activision was no help at all, will not accept returns, places blame on Treyarch and will not answer if an upgrade disc will be available in the future.
It took me a good long time to develop finesse with the controller, I'm not going to re-learn and screw up my gameplay on other titles, just to compensate for what is essentially a screw up on Activision's part.
So, if you use a lefty controller config - don't spend a dime on this game.
What is up with the other reviews this is CRAP!!!!

Call of duty 2 was the best shooting game I have ever played. But Big red One is a piece of crap I hate this game the crosshair aims for you making it hard to find this game realistic. And the graphics suck, And on top of all that it has the worst gameplay ever. If you want to buy a good game with awsome gameplay buy Call of Duty 2 not big red one.
Lack of ingame saves kill all the fun

Don't get me wrong, this is a great game, but the lack of ability to save the game midway just kills the game completely. Its as if all XBOX games are crippled with this problem (Tom Clancy Splinter Cell is another example). Instead of being able to move forward, you end up playing the same level over and over again. Its just too fustrating.
Here's how it works, every time you die in the game you start all over from the last check point. This system works fine for games like Halo since the checkpoints are very frequent. However for COD, the checkpoints are very far from each other.
Also, you cannot save the game in mid-level and switch off your XBOX. In this case, the game will not start from the last checkpoint, instead it will start from the start of the level itself. So, its almost compulsory that you end the level before you switch off the console.
I know this does not sound like a big deal, but trust me, as you go through the game the checkpoints are spaced further apart just to increase the level of difficulty and its just gets plain annoying more than anythign else.
Other than this problem, the game is pretty good.
Less of the same

I had high hopes for this game but it fell short of my expectations. My biggest complaint is its brevity. I finished this game in about 6-7 hours total on the normal difficulty level. That is just not enough game time for the cost of this game. The graphics and sound are great but the play is almost identical to the other COD titles. The AI is mediocre. I am a big fan of all WWII shooters but this title falls short. I will give credit to the voice overs. This feature did add a bit more of a human element to the game. I recommend renting this game before buying.
Am I missing something?

Or is this game just not very challenging at all? Don't get me wrong, I'm very impressed by the storyline, graphics, weapons, etc. But it just seems like it's a little too easy to finish this game. It just seems like it's really hard to die; there's so much available ammo, health packs, and direct hits from MG-42's, grenades, etc. don't really inflict that much damage on you. Does anyone else out there share these thoughts?
Good but too short

I rented this game one weekend. It was a great shooter as I expected. The voice overs and gameplay, not to mention the graphics and storyline were awesome. But I was disappointed that I beat it by the end of the day and had to go and rent another. If you're a fan of the COD or MOH series', its a good rent, but save your money and buy something that will take a little longer and have more replay value (I dont do online gaming)
Lots of Fun, but Too Short

I really enjoyed Call of Duty 2, but when I finished my final mission, I couldn't believe that was all there was. I really can't see myself going back in to play this over and over, as the missions are pretty linear and you don't have too many choices. The layouts guide you where to go for the most part and other than replaying it at a harder difficulty level, there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of replay value, at least from my perspective. Great graphics and a lot of fun, but I wanted more and it seems like the game might be just a bit overpriced for what you get.
Rent it first

So I played this game the other night and finished it the next day. The campaign itself is pretty varied. You fight in a lot of different places throughout which helps to keep it fresh. In some levels you will be driving a tank around the desert, in another you will be flying around in a B-24 Liberator manning the guns and dropping bombs. You can even call in artillery strikes at some points in the game. There is also a pretty wide range of weapons to use. Unfortunately the game does not nail down the feel of actually shooting the guns. The infantry combat can be pretty weak at times; it just seems to lack that visceral intensity that other Call of Duty games have. The AI in the game is actually pretty bad and makes the shooting even worse. Teammates can't seem to hit anything at all and like to get in the way a lot. They are constantly trying to shoot through walls to hit enemies as well. Overall the teammates are pretty useless besides just being extra targets for the enemy to shoot at. The graphics in the game are good. The fire and smoke effects (which you see a lot of) look pretty good. The characters, weapons, and vehicles look nice and have a decent amount of detail. While the levels are completely linear, they are actually designed pretty well and look good.
Overall the game can be pretty fun at times. Although it's clearly inferior to the original pc game, it's the best Call of Duty game on a current generation console by far. Since the campaign was pretty short and the multiplayer wasn't anything special, I would suggest this as a rental.
no exitement, nothing new, short!

I bought this game and thought that it would be pretty rad. I got into the 1st level and imediately was bored and unexited. I like games that capture me right away, and this didnt live up to that. I thought maby it would get better and found out that not only did it stay kinda monotoned but it was really short. The game difficulty dosnt seem to get any harder either. The last level is extreemly easy!! and it seemed like I had a lot of confidence walking through the levels, you never get that blinking red light last breath, low amo, with endless obsticles kind of adrenaline rush. If you want a GREAT game buy "BLACK" that game gets the heart pumping!
Ok... BUT

Not a lot to say here, BUT, I might as well voice my immediate reaction to the opening trailer of the game. As a Canadian, I was incredibly shocked, in disbelief, and incensed that we were given no mention - given our contribution to the war effort in WWII. That set me off on the wrong foot with this game. It was hard for me to enjoy it really. Plus, I found it a bit slow and tedious. If you're more into HALO and PC Counter-strike ... don't know if you'll like this so much.
OH blast, I just realized, this is Call of Duty 2. Hopefully they ammended such ommission in BRO.
