This game was not very good. I pretty much beat it on almost all the difficulties, but once you're done that's it. If you keep playing it, there is no point to it. The replay value of this game plunged on me, and once I beat it, I never played it again. Plus, it is very easy, so in a matter of hours, you will beat it and let it collect dust in your closet.
I was extremely disappointed at the racism shown to Russians in this game. The game is about blowing the heads off Russian soldiers invading New York City, raising the American flag, and leaving. Every level is like that, except some are in the snow and some are in the city.
What really pissed me off was the length of the game. Any idiot can beat this game in a matter of 2 hours on normal difficulty. NOT EVEN THE EASY DIFFICULTY!!!!! There are not many guns. Here are a list of the weapons you have:

-Your trusty Wrench to bash the heads off Russians.(always equipped)
-C4 Charges
-AK-47
-Submachine gun
-Heavy Machine Gun
-Sniper Rifle
-Rocket Launcher
-Shotgun
-Revolver
-9mm 17 ammo clip pistol
-Grenades
-Moltov Cocktails

The sound really isn't too good, either, and the Russians scream non-sense at you and your men right before they turn you into swiss cheese.
I would not recommend this game to most people unless you don't have anything else to spend your money on I guess.

everything a mission based action game should be, and more..

this game is hot.

it's multi-platform, but if youre a gamecube owner looking for a killer app., this is the one. it's a breath of fresh air if you think the gamecube has too many "childish" games out on the market, and here's why:

Freedom Fighters is set in an alternative universe where the USSR wins the Cold War, and the United States loses its title as the worlds biggest, baddest country. eventually, Russia spreads its power all over the globe, and decides to conquer America, which is one of the only countries left to resist the Regime.

you play as Chris Stone, some random plumber in Brooklyn who heads off on a local job. as it turns out, the Soviets begin invasion of your country at the same time, and you get tied up in a rebel faction that just won't let the enemy take New York City over that easily. cool, right? keep reading.

the game is broken up into a series of missions. you USUALLY have the ability to do 2 or 3 missions in any order you please. each mission you do directly affects the other. for example:

one stage has a helipad guarded by russians. if you take out the helipad, copters wont be able to fly in and drop off a never-ending supply of reinforcements in OTHER stages, thus facilitating your future missions.

objectives are simple: fight your way to occupied spots on the mission map, and tear down the Soviet flag and replace it with the American flag. you may think "ah, repetitive!" but its really not, especially if youre a fan of the genre. often, stages are challenging and using your squad intelligently can be a real blast.

speaking of squads, this is how they work: you start the game off with no one, but as you do things (like blowing up helipads, setting free POW's and such) you get "charisma" points. earning more charisma increases the amount of troops you can recruit to help you fight your urban war out on the streets. you'll find recruits at the beginning of most stages, or hiding in alleys, or abandoned buildings. simply press the A button when near them and Chris will go "LET'S ROLL" or some really cool bad-ass catch phrase, and the soldier will join. you can have up to 12 guys with you at a time.

you can tell your men to defend a certain area (done with the X button), lock onto a specific target or patrol an area (with the Y button) or fall in (with the A button). the C-stick gives you a full 360 degree rotation around your character, Chris, and shooting is done with the R button. what's really awesome about Freedom Fighters is that you can climb onto LOTS of stuff--low walls, garbage bins, cars...the list goes on. whatever seems plausible, you most likely can climb. and your guys follow you!! very rarely will you find your men stuck, or ignoring your commands. one last thing. some missions may have water you can swim in, but your recruits will not follow. they'll find a way around the water and meet up with you when you tell them to fall in.

enemy AI is great in this game. the Russians seem to use the same commands you do, and you'll see a commander ordering his men to flank you, move in on your position, stand their ground, or retreat. some men hide behind mounted machine guns, and lob grenades. there are also snipers who hide out in abandoned buildings, as well as Hind helicopters and tanks that patrol certain areas of stages. vehicles like these can only be taken out with HEAVY DUTY weaponry.

in terms of weapons you recieve in the game, the list is pretty decent:

wrench (youre a plumber, hehe)
molotov cocktails
C4
grenades
9 mm pistol
colt 45 (or a gun very similar)
Ak-47
SMG rifle (fast shooting rifle)
sniper rifle
shotgun
rocket launcher
heavy machine gun

youll find stages littered with ammo and medi-kits as well. normal difficulty offers plenty of healing items, so you dont have to worry about being slaughtered. im not exactly saying Freedom Fighters is an easy game, but if you know what youre doing, it will be challenging yet enjoyable at the same time. REMEMBER! Strategy is the key!

here are some downsides to the game:

-the fact that you can't use any vehicles. stages are filled with taxi cabs, civilian cars, police cars, russian cargo trucks, etc. NONE of these can be used, but you can blow them up and use them for cover. armored cars will drive by in some stages and drop off enemy troops. these plow through you and kill you instantly if youre in the way, and once again, cannot be jacked.

-multiplayer is kinda lacking. you get 3 stages, 2 of which kinda suck. you choose either soviet or american sides, and the point to multiplayer is to hoist your flag, and KEEP it hoisted for the amount of time chosen. (can range from 5 minutes to 30 minutes) capture bunkers, and recruit men (who will continue to spawn) 2 out of the 3 stages are kind of chaotically designed. they are cluttered and often the result is frantic gunfire with little strategy involved.

-not much replay value. personally i love the game and its concept, and i will continue to play it over and over. if youre a person who beats a game and is done with it, perhaps just rent this.

-a bit short. i highly suggest playing Freedom Fighters in short bursts. its possible to play it straight through, in about, 2-3 days, but it won't be as enjoyable. do 1 campaign a day. that way, you'll enjoy using your squad strategically, and you won't simply rush through the stage gung-ho. the beauty of this game is using the squad. had Freedom Fighters been lacking this feature, it'd still be good, but not AS good.

-the game didn't come with a soundtrack CD. the music is powerful and awesome! think of Metal Gear Solid music, with a russian spin. KIND OF.

how do i sum it all up? if you like what you read, definitley get this game, or at least rent it. Freedom Fighters is squad-based action ALMOST perfected. sleeper hit of 2003.

Man, this is the second time I have revised my review. But let me tell you, I want you to know what I think now...

The game is much better as you get to the cold parts of the game. The graphics are inredible. Every environment seems to look different, and there is plenty of objects to utilize. Also, the environment just feels perfect. Especially at night, where you get to see the beautiful lighting effects. And mabye a little bump-mapping action.

When I started I was a little frustrated with the controls. Once at the end, I noticed I was a master. I mastered grenades and cocktails. I also mastered the ease of switching between things. I can use a medkit in a second flat.

As I said before, the game gets better. As you go with it you will expeirience different environments and some new weapons. Namely the awesome unmounted machine gun, which is the funnest weapon around. Mostly because at the last level you can plow through enemies on your own. The second half of the game levels usually have one or 2 guys dropping heavy machine guns. The otehr weapons are: AK assault rifle, Shotgun, Beretta(?), Revolver, grenade, mounted machinegun, sniper rifle, c4(kinda), monkey wrench(booya), and the molotov cocktails(which become really great on those armored guys later). The best weapon of all is the rocket launcher. There are much more explosions going on when you have it.

The characters are alright. I don't know where bozboy(spelling?) came from. Still, they talk, and have actual personalities of some kind. The end though doesn't mention what happens to a few characters, and it kinda fades out when the person is talking.(i don't want to say names)...

The game took me longer than I expected. I was doing one mission a day. Sometimes 2. After 2 weeks I am done. Still, the game was fun while it lasted. Besides, I doubt I would want to shoot guys for 50 more levels.

I had fun with it. The multiplayer looks kinda stupid, especially with 3 maps to choose from.

Oooo, and recruits. Recruits get less and less useful. They good for drawing fire though. My recruits usually are fun to play with because they will get defensive even when you say follow(meaning they have common sence). For everything that the game does, I still get the feeling that it isn't the game it could of been. More guns, more ammo(sometimes) and a little more explosions(even though there are quite a few. The news station level is the funest probably. So just enjoy the game if you buy it.
Recommended that you wait till this ones about 30 dollars or so. Mabye 45 bucks if your desperate for some action, but 40 is pushing it.

Now this game is from the same makers as hit man so i will break it out for you.

Graphics,
Okey to current graphics but they get the job done.

Audio,
Ok overall but it does get a little boring

Gameplay,
This is a multi-platform so the console versions are the same. But the PC version is a little different because it does not have auto aim.

Good
- Simiple controlles and easy to get into
- Its for every thing
- Commanding your team is easy
- you have a chocie of how much you put into the game
- good price
Bad
- It is a little short
- Audio is boring
- The A.I. is bad
- no vehicles
- more freedom in the game would be nice

Overall I give it a
8.2

Immature.

The game is basically flawless except for the fact that you can only play as a pro-democrat (except for multiplayer mode), Chris Stone, who bashes the Communists. This game is way too one-sided. The Democrats are portrayed as the ones suffering from injustice and cruel treatment by the Communists. I remember a part where one of the characters describes that her family has been abducted by the Communists for no reason. Freedom Fighters speaks nothing good of the Communists and it is basically a game that glorifies America and its democratic regime. To make things worse, you have no choice but be a pro-democrat. As for realism, this game is far from it. America being invaded by the Communists? *chuckle* go figure that out... This is game is only suitable for anti-Communists freak who wanna condemn the Russians. Personally, I am sick of all these baseless and frivolous idea that the Communists are the evil ones while the Democrats are the peace-lovers. Gimme a break... I am totally disappointed with Freedom Fighters, which only serves as a lame propaganda. Recommended for those who love to console themselves.

Well I got this game for $20 and it was worth it. The game doesn't really have that much innovative features, but it rocks anyway. The graphics are pretty good. The only reason I didn't give this game 5 stars is that you can't control vehicals. Imangine gunning down bad guys in a helicopter while you issue your soldiers commands. Oh, for you guys not likeing this game for having Soviets as the bad guys give us a break! They put nukes in Cuba that were pointed at us for crying out loud!!!

this game could have been better but still was decent. the fact of only limited wepons dissapointed me. I mean, they could have at least included m16's and real frag grenades. its not like the average citizen can't go to the gun shop for a 22 or shotgun. next time the makers should use common sense!

Excellent fun!

This game is quite fun and easy to play once you learn the controls. The squad based tactics work well, although the AI is not as smart as you would like. Basically if you want a job done right you better do it yourself. There is a good variety of gameplay and the level design is well done. If you like combat games I think this is one of the best for the Gamecube.
