A surprisingly fun excursion into gaming obscurity!

Whip Rush is one of the many R-Type clones released for home consoles, but like most R-Type clones, Whip Rush isn't half bad, in fact it's a pretty fun little game. If anything I personally feel Whip Rush is more of a clone of a Turbo Grafix 16 game called Psychosis which was quite possibly one of the best R-Type clones ever made due to its originality, artistic merits and its weapons, the latter being the one thing that Whip Rush rips off.

You see, you can pick up this shield-like weapon that you can reposition on your ship at will which in most cases will re-direct your fire (total Psychosis rip-off). You can also have these shields fire vertically or horizontally in order to destroy enemies in tight spots. You certainly get a little variety of weapons to choose, though all of the weapons come in one-second long pick-ups that quickly change per second to the next weapon or shield item and trying to get a weapon you like or at least one that works turns into a very bloody war; apparently the enemies know what weapons kill them faster, so they'll do anything to stop you from getting the weapons you need.
The game is like R-Type, Sol-Feace or Grind Stormer on that score as some of the levels require you to pick up specific weapons in certain levels.

You face up against a variety of different bosses that force you to use your head in order to destroy their weak spot and find a good hiding place when they strike (a la R-Type) and event hough this game is devoid of checkpoints, it forces you back to the beginning of each level every time you continue, so there is that challenge.

The graphics are quite good for a Genesis game as every background and enemy is lush and colorful, though audibly speaking the game has a few issues: the sound isn't too bad, but the music is what suffers he most.

It starts off REALLY good, almost to the point of being an instant classic with some heavy and borderline epic tunes... but then it just dwindles and falls until the very last level. Half the music sounds borderline cartoonish as level four sounds adventurous like you're flying on top of Falcor in the Never Ending Story and the music in level 2, no matter where you are in the game sounds like you're in a Sonic the Hedgehog game! The boss theme song is bad in its repetitious self, but what killed it for me was the level where you finally take on the cruise ship... godawful. That's all I can describe that level song as; it's like they didn't even try.

So between the first level and the last level, you've got nothing but audible mediocrity for your ears. At least the story isn't half bad; it's probably one of the better shoot em' up stories on the Genesis!

Overall, I suggest you get this game, it's got a lot going for it and it is pretty fun over all; it's definitely a surprisingly fun excursion into gaming obscurity!
