Finally a real racing experience !

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 8 / 9

First of all, TOCA is the first game that I have seen in Xbox or PS2 that has all the elements needed to offer the gamer a true real life racing experience. The game has most of the racing championship classes of the world. From classics to open wheel Formula One cars you will experience a wide range of driving including hotrods, rally, cross-rally, Super V-8, Formula Ford, and many others. But the ones that really shine are DTM and Formula Ford, although that is only my opinion. The physics and the feeling of the game is incredible. Each car has it's own engine sounds, physics, and speed "feeling".
This game is so good that I have to say I will not be playing Project Gotham Racing 2 anymore. Finally, the storyline of the game is pretty solid and fun. Some scenes will be silly, but be careful, you might become addicted to it. TOCA made sure the storyline was in synch with the racing part of the game so you will be very much involved in the game as a whole. It is also Xbox live compatible but I do not have the kit yet.
My advice : Buy it and become addicted.

This game is great

Toca Race Driver 2 is a great game. It features so many different racing types and is a real blast to play, especially on Live!

Don't listen to the moron who's moaning down below, how many other games have you played that are completely unlocked out of the box? You start off racing the Ford GT and can pick cool cars such as the Mustang, souped up Ferrari's, Mercs and NASCAR style racers.

This game is graphically stunning and handles great too. If you own an Xbox and are looking for a racing game then get this, you won't be disappointed!

"cheat code" system is a scam

This game is advertised as having dozens of different types of cars and many, many tracks to play on. What they don't tell you is that you only get a couple cars and tracks... you have to play through a very long and tedious single player campaign to "unlock" all the cars and tracks. And, trust me, it will take a lot of time. So if you think you can just buy the game, and only play it occasionally, and use whatever car or track you want, you're wrong. The game is crippled until you either spend a lot of time with it, or, unbelievably, you can call their 900 number to pay them more to let you unlock the cars and tracks. Wow... what a scam.

Otherwise a GREAT game... the prefect balance, IMHO, between a realistic driving sim and a fun arcadey sim... what a shame.

stay away from this one as single player

This has got to be the worst single player racing game ever created. The game claims all sorts of racing types but the box did not mention that you can't select what type of racing you want to race insted you have to progress through every type of racing before you can select what you want and unlike pro race driver you can not tweak your cars before each race! and you can't adjust the difficulty so as you progress the races are impossible to win! Stay away from this one as I do not recomend it. The 1 star is for single player only x-box live is fun and as for the dork above me I could name several games where all the racing types are ready from the start.

i just got this game.the box made it real cool.looking around it and reading the back was great.but wen it came 2 game play it was allright.but after a while after the first 2 wins when u just start the game, the game pisses you off.i mean the other cars are way hella faster then you,its hard 2 get first place without crashing, and its to challenging that makes you want 2 return it.i luv the graphics and cars in em,but this game is to damn hard.when you are racing, and u com first, the computer comes right behind you and push off the track, making you crash, and gettng parts damage or worse.it would be better if u can make the level easy or that kind of stuff.i played it,im only started and im doing the f1 cars.dis really pisses me off, when you are first place the com ramms yo but off the track, making you crash and getting last, and its also eally hard 2 catch up.dis game can be fun,but when you want 2 win you gonna give up before getting 10 percent of the game finish.the car damage is good and all,but the racing part gets really fustrating when the computer is hella faster then you,and ramms yo car off the track making you start the race all over.i practiced the course so manny times, maybe about 20-30 times in time trial.but when im racing the computers i cant even manage 2 stay in 6 place or above

Awesome Graphics but controls are lameo!

I got the pc version of this game for my birthday, after downloading the demo. The graphics are stunning and the best I've ever seen in a pc racing game. Rallisport Challenge comes close, but I think this is better. While the depth of this game is tremendous, they don't give you much to start with. I think you have 3 tracks and 5 cars to begin. The controls for this game are horrible! I've adjusted my steering wheel controls many times, and it just sucks. I don't know how to say it any clearer. I own about 10 pc racing games, and I've never had the control problems I have with this one. I thought Moto Gp 2 was hard to learn, well this was harder for me. It is not a true racing simulation, because you don't barely turn your wheel and end up going off the road because of it. Then the cheatcode system is the most disappointing thing about this game. You have to pay $5 on the codemasters website to get the 7 codes of the game. The codes are good for only 1(that's right) profile. If you should ever delete your profile for those codes, then you'd have to create a new profile and need NEW codes. My son has to race under my profile to use my saved codes...understand this?!?!?! They don't work under a separate profile. Like I said earlier, the graphics area the best I've ever seen in pc racing. Yet with the controls and pay to play with cheatcodes, only the true racing fans should try and tackle this game.

Occasionally fun, mostly annoying

TOCA Race Driver 2 tries hard and comes close to being a winner, but ultimately fails due to the fact that the designers forgot that we play games to have fun.

The first thing you'll notice is that the graphics and sounds are quite nice. Maybe they're not the all-time greatest, but certainly very good. So, your initial impression is positive. But just as your enjoying the picturesque scenery, you'll reach a turn in the track and quickly discover the game's huge stumbling block-- it is completely unforgiving. Don't think for a second that this is an arcade racer; this is a simulator through and through, and unless you really want to take a lot of time to learn the intricacies of handling a myriad of different cars, this is not the game for you.

Handling your car is tricky, and if you oversteer or try to drift in the wrong type of car, you'll find yourself spinning off the track and quickly slipping from first place to 20th. And, unlike in some racing games, your opponents here won't slow down to give you another chance-- they're out to win and will leave you in the dust. Okay, so I suppose it's realistic. But, the end result is that you will find yourself restarting races many, many times. Essentially, you have to have a perfect drive in order to come in first. I can't tell you how many times I was in the lead, coming up on the final stretch, and then unexpectedly spun out, and suddenly found myself struggling to even place in the top ten. That's not fun, it's downright frustrating.

On the positive side, I really enjoyed the fact that the designers added a bit of story to the game between the races, giving it a touch of personality that's often lacking in driving games. It ultimately makes you care more about winning, and keeps you interested in what's going to happen next.
Also, on a positive note, is that there are a whole slew of cars to drive and over fifty tracks-- not too shabby. Unfortunately, you'll have to unlock them, and that means either playing through the extremely tough races, or paying (yes, paying) the publisher to send you the cheat codes (I almost wonder if they made the game so unforgiving so that the average gamer would be forced to pay to unlock new cars.)

In any case, I wanted to like to Toca. I was really in the mood for a good racing game, and I had high hopes. But I just don't have the patience work my way through something so unforgiving. I really wish the designers added an "arcade mode" or at least gave us the option to adjust various difficulty levels to tailor the game to the player's ability level. As it stands, you will only enjoy this game if you have the time to really devote yourself to learning it. As a working person, I simply can't invest that much time in a video game.

You'll love this game if you're interested in racing. Notice I said racing and not NASCAR!
