Great Game

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 6 / 6

I bought this game when I heard it was pretty much a Diablo 3, and it's pretty close. I really can't compare the two too closely, because of all the similarities they have they have just that many differences. It has the same click on creature and kill it style play that Diablo had, and the items have just about the same importance that it did in Diablo also. But the graphics are better with actually 3-D characters that you can zoom in and out of in three different perspectives which is really nice since every piece of armor or weaponry you equip changes your characters outlook and it's nice to see what they look like from a close up perspective, or when your using a long range attack you can zoom out to get a good view of everything in the area. The special abilities leveling is also a nice change from the level up and get a new skill technique you find in most RPG's, that and mixed with the ton of unique/magical/set items in the game, you'll find yourself running off the main quest just to engage a group of monsters just to see what you can find. I really don't know how many month's I've been playing this game but out of the 6 characters I started only one has gone all the way through the first game and is about a quarter way through they're second. Every time I start a new character there seems to be a side quest that the first few didn't find so every time is a little bit different. All the characters are really fun to play and I find myself bouncing back and forth between them all the time. The only bug I ever encountered was when the compass was pointing at the wrong area after I completed one of the main quests, but it corrective itself eventually. If you really like hack and slash RPG's, I'd say buy this game.

Almost perfect

It's a wonderful game, but the prolific amount of bugs found in the game play cost it that final star. Overall, if you like rigid storylines with A+B+C plot sequences, this may not be the best of games for you. However, that lack of structure is also what makes the game so unique. You have the freedom to move about an immersive world that maintains a fresh feel even when you aren't working on the main quest. Sub quests are neither easy, lame, nor hackneyed, making it all feel like more an experience to play than a just another game.

Overall, it's almost perfect.

Diablo? It's even better.

Firstly, I haven't run into any of the bugs or game crashes that some of the other reviewers reported. The game runs smoothely and flawlessy at all times on me computer which isn't really high-end as I am just about ready to scrap it and buy a more current gaming machine. All their rants of crashes and buggy gameplay are probably due to their not keeping their graphics drivers updated or probably have something else running in the background. My only problem was getting the game to run while I had ventrilo running. That is the only thing that caused the game to crash. For this I give the game 4 stars. Would have been 5.
This game is for lack of a better word, AMAZING. I haven't had as much fun in an RPG since Ultima VIII or diablo. I didn't like diablo 2 or Baldurs gate. BG was way too boring. This game is very fun to play. The inventory/Items system is straight out of Diablo. The combat is hack/slash like Diablo but with added skillsets to perform special moves and combinations of them. The world is pretty big with alot of cool suprises if you stray from the mainquest paths on the map. The map system is sweet and easy to use giving you the ability to zoom in and see everywhere you have already been. I could go on and on about every aspect of this game but I'll stop here.
I was an Avid RPG gamer but the last few yrs I have barely played any due to the types of games coming out. This game has renewed my love for the Genre and i have been playing nonstop for the last 3 days.

Sacred vs Diablo

I like to play many games and I use virtual cd player so I dont have to keep swapping CD's - This game requires the CD to play.

Game play can be buggy at times. Getting the lastest patch 1.8 doesn't seem to do much about it.

More drops and loot then you can shake a stick at. Can advance your player above level 100, so you have some definite goals and it will last quite a while.

Overall its a good game. The ending is extreamly disappointing and will leave you with a feeling of... ??

Excellent but quirky

I just completed the whole game (not just the demo). This is a LONG, involved and very addicting hack-n-slash RPG. Long time RPG players will like it and newby RPG players can cut their teeth on it. At the end you can "export" your character (mine was level 44) and use it to start a new game. The new game is the same as the original but with higher level monsters and much higher level goodies to find. There is one BIG problem with this game..... it can be very quirky to get it running. Sometimes errors and lockups (requiring rebooting the computer)happened 3-4 times before it would finally run. This happened nearly every time I started the game i.e. I couldn't get my computer configured to not have this happen. Once it got up and running right I had NO crashes or problems. The readme file and the game web site have MANY suggestions how to configure your system to make the game run if you have problems. Even with these problems this is a GREAT GAME if you like RPGs. The ending says "to be continued" - I am looking forward to that.

Not So Sacred

Wouldn't play on three systems. Tried it with Patch and without. Tried all variations and combinations of settings. Uninstalled game. Too bad. Looked like it would be interesting.

Misunderstood

Do not let the 75% rating on gamerankings fool you... This is a high quality game, much like the original. Let's start with the weak points of this game.

The graphics are definitely not exciting, however, spells and abilities look cool and are fun to use. It can be argued that the graphics contain a distinct art style to them; regardless they are certainly not up to today's stantards. As you progress in the game you will notice little touches like multiple well placed corpses from a large battle. But, chances are, you will glance at the 2D screenshots and think to yourself:"Isn't this what Baldur's Gate used to look like?".

Now, the other negative aspect of this game: side quests. It's not the actual side quests themselves per say... It's how they are written. This game originates from Germany, which means that it undertook a translation. I have seen 10 year olds write more coherently. My suspicions lead me to think there was no person involved, it was strictly done by program. If you compare the main quests with the side quests you will understand my position. And yes, the main quests are uncorrupted.

If you can see past the above negativities you will be rewarded with a refreshingly deep action RPG. Lets talk about gameplay. There are multiple ways to play each character, much like Diablo 2. You simply will not play the same character the same way. Skills, abilities, spells and combat arts are all very customized. Translation: Very high replay value. Each character is original and all of them (surprisingly) are a pleasure to play. Killing goblins, dragons, zombies and Hill giants have never been funner. Battles are constant, they are everywhere, and most of them are frantic and require a touch of stragety. It's very open ended so you can visit all these beasts any time you want. Assuming of course your able to travel across Sacred's vast terrain to get to them.

If your a long time gamer you know that difficulty makes or brakes a game... And let me tell you, the difficulty in this game is perfect. A word of caution, this game will be difficult for non-hardcore rpg gamers. Length might be your next concern. And let me quiet any doubt you might have about it. It's LONG... to say the least, and much like Diablo you can return to the game on a more difficult setting, meaning better items (the important part) and of course more replay value. Don't be fooled into assuming there is no story here, there is, and while it's not the best like "Planescape Torment" or "KOTOR" it's still decent.

Sound is the strongest point of this game period. Music and sound effects. There are hundreds of different comments your hero will make (each of them) by either progressing through quests, killing beasts or simply out of boredom. Much of them will leave you sminling to yourself. Music is well placed, it's good and it's executed perfectly for each moment. It's slow when in cities and it's lifting when engaged in battle. Also, it's worth mentioning that the main quest characters all have voice overs.

The length, the difficulty, the sound, the music, the replay value, the customized choices and the sheer amount of pleasure gained by killing an orc with meteor showers forces me to give this game 5 stars. If your a hardcore RPG action player do yourself a favor and go buy it. This game is a sleeper much like Gothic II. Both of them, are simply the best RPGs available to us gamers at the moment. I strongly recommend both of them. Notice: Most of this review was aimed at the original sacred and not the expension.

Great graphics, fun game

Very good engine - didn't run into the quirks other reviewers have seen - Encore has been active in bug fixes, maybe that's the reason.

Enjoyable graphics, interesting quests, reasonably non-linear world to explore with several non-main quests hidden throughout. Easy interface to master and use. Needs more variety in monsters - the same basic types keep coming up, and there seem to be random hordes of monsters incessantly wandering the countryside. Would prefer fewer but more interesting monsters.

Documentation is OK, not great. Took a while to figure out several items, although the interface is pretty easy. E.g. nowhere does it describe differences at the beginning of "Bronze" vs. "Silver" selection - that seems to be a difficulty level selection, but it doesn't say so anywhere.

Ending is a let-down. All of a sudden you're done. Doesn't let you back into the world to finish other non-main quests, which would be nice.

Look forward to replaying the game as a different character. Magic seems to be challenged, but I'll give it a try. The game writers seem very dedicated to improving the game.

It had potential

Okay, let me start by saying that I was really looking forward to this game. I played both Diablo games and was looking forward to a newer type of this genre.

I ran into a problem almost immediately. It takes forever to load, sometimes it wouldn't even load. I know it's not my computer because my PC is top-o-the-line. AMD 64 3200+ w/ 1gig corsair 3200 ddr ram, ATI 9800 pro... you get the picture.

Once I started the game I really enjoyed the graphics. Sure they're not to the callibur of UT2k4 or something like that, but were really much better than Diablo 2.

The main problem I had, and the reason for only three stars is that no matter how powerful you get the enemies seem to gain in power equally. At 20th level, the same goblins who were real tough at 3rd level are now super goblins who are still equally tough. You get more experience for them, but at the cost of never getting to be dominate of any monster in the game! I'm not talking about far away, but right near the starting point of the game. I bet at 50th level they will be still proportionally as strong. Therefore, you are fighting for your life constantly. Every creature grows stronger and stronger so you never are able to crush them as lesser monsters. I looked for a game difficulty control to turn down the hype, but there is none. Hopefully, if they come out with an expansion, it will include a way to change difficulty or else tone down the monsters to keep them at their righful place. I understand that in Diablo they used the same character models for tougher monsters, but weak ones were still weak ones and strong ones were strong ones. In this game every monster is strong and grows stronger as you do. There is never an advantage! It's so frustrating.

Good game get the patches

Like the previous reviewer says it has a lot of bugs but if you get the patch at the sacred site online it'll be one of the best games you ever play. Once got the patch and ran it I had no problems whatsoever.
