I liked this game overall but there were alot of small things together that caused inconveniences and made me just want to hurry up and get to the end of the game.

The story was intriguing and interesting but the voice acting? Left a lot to be desired.

The scenery was cool. Cartoonish yet very well done and realistic in parts.

The most annoying thing for me was once I got to Chapter 3 and had to change CDs (there are 3) everytime I quit the game and came back, I had to insert CD #1 first to load the game and then switch the CD out to put in the proper CD. It became very inconvenient and I found myself looking forward to the end of the game. I went for maximum install so I was not expecting to have to do this. Games should be fun and not annoying.

Same thing goes for some of the puzzles. I like being made to think but making some puzzles seemingly camoflauge or obsure is just irritating.

At the game's current price, I would recommend it because it is a fun story just be aware of some annoyances.

If the adventure game genre is dying...

...this is definitely not the game to revitalize it. I picked this game up with moderate expectations at a used book store today. The reviews on the box seemed promising and the $5 price tag was definitely enticing.

First, I must say that the graphics on the game are definitely nice, but that might be all the game has going for it. The dialogue is poor - and the acting talent...well, it's just evident that everyone recorded their dialogue on different days, I don't really feel like the characters are interacting.

The puzzles in the game are assinine. You need to repair an 1800's era locomotive to blow a key out of the steam shaft - when nothing in the game points to the fact that you need a key, or that it is in fact in the steam shaft.

Also, there is only one way to solve a puzzle. If you need objects A, B, C & D - forget about combining B&C you'll be told "That's a terrible idea!" then when you try A&B "That's a wonderful idea!"

Also, you can't solve puzzles, or even begin to, out of sequence. I needed an item to complete a puzzle, which I didn't have. I didn't have it, because Brian refused to pick it up earlier.
(Also crucial items are often hidden in the background or foreground and pixel hunting is a bitch).

I bought this game because I greatly enjoy the genre that the 80's and 90's brought us. Unfortunately, it seems that people have forgotten how to make a solid adventure game. If you're feeling nastolgic, I reccomend putting in your old Monkey Island or King's Quest CD's before purchasing this one; however, if you find it at a low price you might as well pick it up, I seem to be in the minority.

"Circle of Blood" it's not.

I picked up "Runaway because it was $10 and it looked similar to "Circle of Blood" for which I paid much more than the above at the hurrendously over priced [...]. Still that game was much better than "Runaway" because its STORY over-shadowed its price-tag and my fear that it wouldn't run on XP. (it did) "Runaway" had plenty of video, but it dramatized the wrong things. Like an elaborate escape that lasted 20 min. Fun to watch? Sure, but all it did was advance you to the next Rube Goldberg puzzle. None of the answers are revealed until well into the third Act. The exposition in between is revealed mostly through lengthy and boring conversations. "Runaway" promised santaria rituals that turned out to be a small seance. "Runaway" promised deception, which really meant that things were much more benign than I was led to believe. So, yes I felt deceived. "Runaway" is not a terrible game, and the story is told with much more seriousness than its cartoonishness would imply. I wish "Broken Sword" took itself more seriously, but at least that story had layers and a third installmentI can't wait to play. "Runaway's" sorry excuse for a sub-plot involves a UFO encounter that occurs and is never spoken of again.
"Runaway's" biggest broken promise is that it is not the much needed injection of life into the adventure game genre it appeared to be. They don't make them like they used to. "Gabriel Knight 3" was a huge disappointment, and required a degree in theology to play. Not to mention that Tim Curry lost his talent for voice-acting and his new version of "Gabriel" sounded like "Frank N Furter goes down South. I enjoyed the voodoo of the first, and the Southern Gothic atmosphere. I enjoyed the stunning wolf images in the second so much that I started collecting figurines and posters. "Tex Murphy" is as good as dead and we were left on a cliff-hanger to boot. I'm afraid "Runaway" is what those of us without an itchy trigger finger will have to settle for from now on.

Somewhat Disappointing

I have played almost all of the adventure games out there (Monkey Island, Lucas Arts, Tex Murphy, etc.). This one wasn't nearly as good as any of them. The graphics were very good but the story line was sorely lacking and 100% linear. I might as well have just watched a cartoon with a bad plot instead. What really irked me was how the player is unable to do things out of sequence. For example, you have two inventory items that should obviously be combined but you can't combine them until you talk to someone about a certain subject. There are no branches whatsoever in the story line. The acting was marginal; the dialogue was boring, the humor lacking. The puzzles were often tedious and some of them seem like they are inserted simply to make the game longer. Many of them are extremely un-obvious and the average player wouldn't be able to guess them without a walk through. I also experienced several technical difficulties with this game (videos not playing, chapters not installing, etc.).
I really like adventure games and regret the fact that the genre is dying. This game doesn't do much to revive it. I was going to sell my copy but I don't want to put someone else through this.

This is a pretty interesting game. It's funny. It's beautiful. It's cool. And it's a smart one, a must.

The graphics are outstanding, the music pretty nice, and the script very original.

The only thing I didn't like at all was the girl. She was as gorgeous as dumb!

I Just want to say that anyone who didn't like this game or had so-called "bugs" needs to check their head or get a better computer gaming system!!! This is the best adventure game I have ever played (humor, intrigue, originality, graphics, etc.) The lady who wouldn't recommend this to her 6-year-old needs to get a grip!! Your six year old should be playing with tickle me elmo!! This is clearly a mature game (just look at the box cover)I have never had more "adult fun" playing an adventure game until Runaway came along!! I did, however, get annoyed with the cut-scenes being upside-down all the time though. Creative, yet, makes you wonder if your computer is malfunctioning. But, as for bugs, sorry for all those who missed out on a great adventure due to their lack of an up-to-date computer system!!!!!!!!!!Thanks Pendulo! P.S.The lady who needed to try the game on her husband's computer needs to stop the nonsense! We read your same dumb review regarding "Grim Fandango" practically verbatim-nice try! Solitaire comes installed with windows for free!! This goes for all of you who keep complaining about the cost of this game!!!

IF YOU VALUE YOUR SANITY, STAY AWAY!!!

Nothing is more disappointing than a really good idea, not executed properly. That is "Runaway". If you are lucky enough to have a computer system that will run it with no problems, then more power to you! But for the rest of us, get ready to pull your hair out. The game is fun, interesting, all that it should be. But there are so many bugs in this game, it will be a surprise if you get through it at all. First, it was supposed to play on my computer - it didn't. So I played it on my husband's computer which is more powerful. Everything was great until I got to chapter 4 (there are 6 chapters in total). Every time I got to a specific point in the game, it would crash and go to the desktop.

But that wasn't the worst part. The worst part was that the readme file gave only Pendulo Studios' website address and nothing more. And when I emailed them with the problems I was having, I never heard back. Not once. There was no phone number given. Then I did a search and found literally dozens of forums with people with the same problem I had, plus others with a host of other problems. I got more help from strangers then I did the people at Pendulo Studios. I finally took the game back to the Virgin Megastore where I bought it and exchanged it for another game.

I'm not even going to take the time to tell you about the game, because I don't want you to get involved as I did, and then disappointed. The only way I was able to finish the game was someone from one of the forums sent me a file after the point where the game crashed. By that time it didn't matter though. I was too worried about whether something else was going to go wrong to enjoy it. I was tired, frustrated, felt cheated and ignored and I just wanted to see what happened at the end. The joy was gone.

There are other strategy games out there with fewer problems. My advice, buy one of those.

Great game but rating is incorrect

I agree with the other posters that this is a great game. However I would like to point out to the upset mother that this game is actually rated teen. I have contacted Amazon about this problem and I think it will be corrected soon.
