More realistic than most but far from great

I've played regularly for over five months now and have had a variety of experiences with this game. RO does have more realistic features and atmosphere than other WWII shooters which is great but other factors sour the actual gameplay. At present there are still very few servers with players on them. Living in the largest urban sprawl in the US I am surprised to find that there are only about half a dozen servers with decent ping that are populated. Other than the promise of greater realism in the game I was initially attracted by reviews that claimed that the average RO player was more mature and that the juvenile and socially challenged players who populate the more arcade like online games disliked RO and were at worst a small minority. This is unfortunately very untrue. The fact that there are so few populated servers also means that many players with bad pings join in making the game very laggy and unplayable at times. Beyond that the game itself is still very much a work in progress with many issues. I stick with it because now and again there are some really good experiences but some weeks are pretty damn bad. Most of the other reviews here are way too rosy.

Most Realistic Game To Date

ROOST is the most addicting game I have played in a long time. Its addicting becuase its not an easy game to play. You can't just run around like a wild man blasting people like an arcade game. You must sneak around, get into position, and set up your shots carefully. Its almost like being there for real.

Almost There

I am a huge fps fan and also a huge simulator fan so my fps's have to be realstic. Red Orchestra is three games in one Battlefield, medal of honor, and americas army.
Pros
- Intense gameplay

-Very realstic feel and look to it you'll almost break you chair waiting for the next tank round to load

-Sound fx is awesome

-Always changing many different ways to look at one battle

-online only real gameplay. Offline is practice only.

cons

-Gore Where's the Gore some blood and an arm blown off every no and then is not gore. when i shoot a guy he should have a bleeding hole of where i shot'em.

-Respawn I hate respawns. This takes the stakes and skill out of the game.
one life force's players to play smarter and better.

-More people 32 is not enough for these maps more like 64 or 128 would be great.

-smarter ai in practice mode they run right by me.

-to much tracers. The tracers look like medal of honor not real life. real life is one every five rounds and don't look like comets.

That's pretty much it i would recommend this game to any fps gamer it is truely fun and addictive and when you your done you will still be thinking of your battles and you can still hear the screech of artillary coming in.
A must buy.

This game is for all who want a realistic shooter and are tired of the bunnyhopping and instaproning and all the other arcade style nonsense that goes along with them. Maps are great (if you don't like the tank maps, then play the infantry based ones), weapons are incredibly realistic, and the movement action is very realistic yet not too slow pased. It has a learning curve, but if you understand that objects inbetween you and enemy fire are good and you don't think you're rambo then you'll be ok. I love how where you aim with your ironsights is where you shoot; no more random cone fire from other games. The community is great and plays for fun and teamwork. More than worth the $25.

@ Reviewer "J_L_M":

Many of your gripes and others were fixed in the recent patches, including:
* ZoneAlarm / Valve issued their fix for the game.
* Loadng times have been greatly reduced due to a new file system structure included in the new patch.
* With regards to "Installer won't let you install on any drive but C" - I've installed Steam on two separate drives on two different occasions, neither of which were named "C". You must be doing something wrong.
* Artillery settings for each map have been tweaked. Also, with regards to this, the people who complain about excessive arty are usually the ones that run straight into it over ... and over ... and over again.

Also of note: The developers are extremely active in the community and are available on IRC or in the forums. Any issues are taken into account and dealt with as appropriate, as evidenced by the lengthy changelog for the recent patches.

Worth the purchase

Gameplay is slow compared to other FPS's but it's understandable. It gives you an experience no other game can and will require plenty of teamwork. I have to be in a certain mood to hop in and play, but it's well worth the $20 I spent.

Mis-represented and bug-ridden

Caveat Emptor! the box, and indeed this website are misleading: this game is NOT designed for single player at all and there are no "campaigns" or storylines. What this game is is an ONLINE game (which are sad sad shadows of the skill involved in a quality single player game) that "offers" you the ability to "practice" by yourself - practicing is not the same as playing, as there is no effective single player mode. You won't find any mention of practicing until you open the box, whereupon all mention of single-player goes away to be replaced with "online game" and "off-line practice".

Apart from pretending it has a viable single-player mode when it doesn't, it's bug-ridden: freezes up, elements (like the sniper scope) don't work, drive a tank and you can't command it it move while you shoot, because you have to perform each function yourself (you're SUPPOSED to be able to tell the crew "go here" or "do that", but it doesn't work).

very disappointed. Waste of $30.

Almost the Real Thing

I spent 23 years in the Army, and this is as close as it comes to the real deal. Especially fun online. Extremely good physics for tank battles, I was a gunner and then TC and it's almost like sending the real stuff down range. You can coordinate your moves with teammates and use REAL strategy. Act like superman, and you'll be superdead. Not much room to hotdog, unless you want to well, hotdog. You'd better have a fast system and connection, or you'll be cussing when some schmuck you have dead to rights nails you. Plenty of new scenarios/battlefields added weekly to keep your interest. But be careful, it's highly addictive!

yet another crappy game from steam (yay!)

this game was just a waste of money to me. i was hoping for a great ww2 game, and what do i get? first of all the system requirements are misleading. you need well above the minimum requirements to run this, and even then you might have some terribly long loading times. when i did get the game to run, what was i treated to? huge maps and a tank. oh boy, how wonderful! i remember this from a little game called call of duty: united offensive. the tanks were the worst part of that game, but the non-tank maps were incredible. lesson? driving around in tanks or jeeps is BORING. combat is FUN. simple enough? i didn't even see any combat in this game, just a bunch of people driving around! cod: uo already did this, and did it way better. never again will i buy a game from steam!!!

Think about it.

I enjoy first person shooters like DOD, CounterStrike, Battlefield. I got to tell you buying this game is a really bad idea. It so many bug in the game. People cheat: 1. you get a low weapon and they will get an semi auto with scope. When you get a sniper rifle (not many times) you'll get a bolt action with scope. 2. They hit your tank with one shot and your bullets bounce off their tank. 3. This game is so hack friendly. The characters move slow. I play it ever now and then if I want to drive a tank and shoot. I'm just giving you heads up more than anyone did for me. Really, buy a different game and save that money without the fustration of playing a half thought out game.
Note: I never really think a game is bad. This is my first review and I wrote this because the game is really bad.
