Have tinkered with this game off and on for a few months... but because of the learning curve and the lack of a TDM gametype ... Ishelved it for a bit..
Pulled it off recently and spent more time going thru the ins and outs of this game...
The realism is phenomenol!
Ballistics...player movement .... sound .... maps...vehicles...weapons...
awesome
The gametype available is a "base aquisition" type game... Both sides have various objectives to conquer and or defend... with the victorious team having attained a higher success rate at the end of the map.
The lack of TDM and the built in "classes" in each map still caused me some concern...'
However since this game is based on one of the most friendly game engines of all time... the Unreal Tournament engines .. i was able to begin modding the game to a more appealing format for myself... Currently running
an online RO server now...
Serious players will truly appreciate this game... large community online ...good future...
Lots of fun, but not what you're used to!

Don't let your previous gaming experiences cloud your judgement of this game! This is NOT BF2, COD2, DoD, CSS or any of the above. Just because a game aspect didn't work on any of those platforms, don't jump to the conclusion that it doesn't work on this one!
That being said, Red Orechestra is a very impressive game. Once you've gotten into the right mentality to play it, (no running, gunning bunny-hopping!) it gets better and better. There are a variety of map styles: armor, combined arms (armor and infantry) and pure infantry. Give each map type a try, as well as each class on each map; every map/class combination has a different feel and playstyle to it.
In addition, the development staff and community are exceptional (to say the least)! Having problems with loading or something? Seek (AND RECEIVE) assistance from the helpful community forums. Also, how many other games have their developers and staff ACTIVELY posting on their support forums? Can't ask for anything more!

This game has a steep learning curve. Those expecting to pick up the game and start playing will be in for a rude awakening. The developers of this game placed a strong emphasis on realism. This game would be better classified as a sim than a FPS. If you like ultra realistic games, this one is for you. Beware, this game is distributed by STEAM. Once you buy this game, it's yours. At this time, STEAM does not allow the transfer of games.

^. As my title says you either love it or you hate it. Personally after playing the free weekend on steam I don't like it. It is still fun BUT some of the realism takes away from the game. In some of the bigger levels you will find yourself walking for a while to get in the action along with these big levels comes the FIVE to SEVEN MINUTES to load one map. Maybe I am just not patient enough but that is pretty long. This game is for people who want a REAL LIFE breathing game. With no dot in your screen showing where you are shooting, Nades that send dirt everywhere, tanks that are unstoppable.
Pro:
The realism is very cool at SOME parts
The graphics are beutifal
The sound is great
Cons:
The loading times are insane
Laggy at menus and game sometimes and I have a very good connection
Practice Mode can be very laggy as well
RO is uber 1337 guys

This game is probably one of (if not the) most realistic I've seen yet for FPS's. Its not designed as a kiddie run and gun game, those looking for that in RO will be disapointed. But if you like realistic balistics, recoil, death and dammage for infantry, combined with complex Armor action..look no further. Valve anticheat works fine, and after playing for a hundred hours or so, I'v seen no cheating, and have seen players removed for questionable goings on. The ingame vioce coms work great, and the more mature crowd you meet and interact with ingame via voip is refreshing. The game developers regularly interact with the players/ customers , and have just released the first of a series of large content patches which is unparalelled by any of its competitors.
5 Stars Tripwire Team! Keep up the great work!

If you like WW2 history and FPS games you should check this out.
Watch history come alive and blast you with an T34/85 HE shell!
I have years of Doom/Quake/HL/Source experience and found the learning curve was steep but I find Red-O much more immersive and satisfying than my other FPS games. It's a thinking man's FPS game and strategy and technique are more important than pure hand eye co-ordination. There's great ammount of detail in the modeling of the game. It's all historical equipment and locations. I play Red-O online and gave up the other PC games besides solitaire. There are a few bugs to be worked out of this new game but the developers are active posters on the Red-O forums and updates can be expected. You can watch Cross Of Iron and play some Red-O for the complete Ostfront experience.
Most realistic WWII infantry and tank combat game

I have been a huge fan of first person shooters for over a decade now and I have played many WWII-themed shooters. I am sad to say that after playing Red Orchestra: Ostfront, it's hard to go back to playing any other FPS. It completely spoils other games for you. Once you play this game, you will expect the same amount of realism from other FPS's.
Okay, so you're thinking about buying this game? You need to know several things about it. First, there is a somewhat steep learning curve. It does not play like most other FPS's. It will feel strange at first, so hang in there. Second, I recommend at least 1GB of RAM. Third, this game stresses REALISM. That means that it won't play like other WWII games such as Call of Duty, Medal of Honor, Battlefield 1942, etc... Fourth, this is a great game. If this sounds like it may interest you, you should definitely try the game. You will not be disappointed!

The program Steam that we all learned to love with Halflife II is back. That's what you actually get for your money and then the game downloads from the server. Got broadband? you had better. Took me a total of 2 hours to update at 30kb. Game is good looking and runs smooth on my old GF6/256mb card with 1 GB of DDR ram. AMD 3000+ with WinXP 64bit. This is a simulation and a mature game. Quake players or BFers may want to really read about it before you buy it. Might be to realistic for some in the technical aspects of the game such as manual aiming/reloading. Realistic optics and accuracy. Worth playing but swiftly becoming boring. Online gameplay is problematic. If your ping is over 400ms, look for misery and mystery deaths.

Might be a fun game for all I know, but since you have to download something from the company websight to get past encription, and since I don't have High-speed internet, it was impossible to load (even to just play solo, which is all I wanted to do), so I basically just threw away $30. It's like 1990 all over again - remember that fun tension after buying a new game and wondering if it would work, or if you would have to spend 3 hours fiddling with com and port settings? Welcome back to the nightmare...
This game is for massive online DSL junkies - for the rest of us, don't waste your money.
