Waited and waited and waited: it was worth it!!!

Guitar Hero is probably the best series of video games ever made. The whole concept is simply amazing. I originally purchased it for my son, who wanted to take guitar lessons, to see if he would stick with it. Not only did he stick with it, but he showed a lot of rhythmic ability and a real willingness to play songs to perfection. For that alone, it was worth the price of the game and special controllers! But little did I know that I would be completely sucked in to this game, playing road tours with my son's band!!! It is probably the most fun we have ever had together!

Given that Aerosmith is my very favorite rock n roll band, I was beyond excited when I heard about this latest release. I was so anxious to see the set list! Now that I have had the opportunity to play, I have to say it is awesome. The graphics are sensational; a lot of the trademark moves of Steven Tyler and Joe Perry are captured quite accurately. I read some where that the creators actually rigged Joe and Steven up with some kind of sensors and mapped their movements to more accurately capture them on the video. The work put into this effort really shows. If you have ever seen Aerosmith on stage, you will know what I mean!.

The song selection so far is great. Not every one of their hits, but plenty of great great songs. Not only that, but there are songs by many of the acts Aerosmith has toured with, like one of my favorites, Joan Jett, Lenny Kravitz, and Cheap Trick. I'll write more details after I beat the game on hard. Then I have to turn it over to my son, so I will have more time on my hands!

Fun Follow Up to GH3

I will admit I am not Aerosmith's greatest fan, but when I found out they were going to be doing a Guitar Hero game I thought how cool...

My husband and I have been playing all afternoon since we brought the game home, and despite what others have said it is a FUN game. In my opinion it's a lot more ...colorful...than GH3, which I love. The venues are awesome, very creative. The setlist has many songs that you will instantly recognize while throwing in older, lesser known Aerosmith songs. Which isn't a bad thing...I don't think we've come across a song that we don't like. For every venue you start off playing 2 warm up songs by different artists as the old GH band. After that you play 3 songs as Aerosmith and then an encore.

I have read many early comments from various websites with people complaining about Aerosmith being picked to do this game. What they fail to mention is that with ANY band they choose to do these games with there are going to be people who won't want that game, and that's understandable. When the rumored Metallica GH comes out the same thing will happen because there are people who don't like them. For those saying that this game should have been available as downloadable content for $15-20 are just full of themselves and not thinking. On the PS network they want you to pay almost $7 for an add-on pack of just 3 songs. Do the math. This game has over 40 songs....

With all that being said, if you enjoy music and the GH series you will like this game. If you can't stand Aerosmith, then yes, stay away and wait for GH4 this fall. But for those who think they might like the game, don't be discouraged from buying it.

Same rehashed game don't bother unless you love Aerosmith dearly

This one's for the aerosmith fanboys only. The gameplay is the same as GHIII and it doesn't even contain the good aerosmith songs. This is just Activision's latest attempt to milk the cow like they did w/ guitar hero 80's. You're better off just going the DLC route.

Definitely not worth $60

This is clearly for the Aerosmith fans out there. Granted, this might have <45 songs, but only the biggest fans will appreciate it primarily being Aerosmith.

If you are the type of fan who is a fan of Aerosmith's faster and harder tracks, you might be a little upset to NOT find: Get A Grip, Dude Looks Like a Lady, Shut Up and Dance, Just Push Play, and Eat the Rich. At least they have Livin' On the Edge and Sweet Emotion. However, because these songs are not in the game, I'm expecting them to be available for download and only playable with GH:A, which will only drive the price for this expansion pack higher.

The interface is identical to GH3, but with a small upgrade in animations and level of detail. The cartoonish figures of the Aerosmith band members is fun, but at times I couldn't help but think that Steven Tyler's character looked like a soulless zombie ape. I think Activision could have done a tad better with Steve since the other band members' cartoon counterparts look great.

In terms of difficulty, players will notice that hammer-ons and pull-offs are not as easy to execute as in GH3. You have to be more precise (like in Rock Band). Likewise, players who are used to Hard on GH3 may find GH:A a tad easy. It reminded me of expert on Rock Band rather than the insaneness of GH3. But this is not necessarily a bad thing since even Easy can be discouraging for some.

In addition to the songs for purchase in The Vault (no longer Guitar Center), you can also purchase some extended videos of Aerosmith interviews. During the game, every 6 songs you are treated to a short video which gives background interviews about the next venue (Super Bowl, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, etc.). Although these interviews are funny and provide insight into Aerosmith's history, the combined videos total less than 90 minutes and they can probably be viewed on YouTube in a couple weeks. Again, not worth the $60.

One high note is that the game is compatible with GH3 Gibson, as it should be. But another good bit of news is that is also compatible with the Nyko controller (which is also compatible with GH3 and Rock Band). Unless you need a new guitar, just buy the game by itself.

So, keeping in mind that all the Aerosmith songs are exclusive for GH:A (they will not be available for GH4 or Rock Band), it might be worth the $60. But for me, I could have waited for GH4, or for the price to drop in 3-4 months when GH4 is released.

An average expansion pack for the price of a whole new game

I sadly agree with most people in that this game is just Guitar Hero 3 with aerosmith songs. There are no new characters or any decent songs besides aerosmith, except a couple like stone temple pilots. While the gameplay remains fun and challenging, it is not worth 60 dollars for 30 aerosmith songs and 10 others. Unlike Guitar Hero 3, this game only caters to people that like softer classic rock or Joe Perry's solo redneck rock. While the greatness of the franchise remains in tact, this disguised expansion pack by Activision shows that they like fooling consumers too.

Don't even rent it. It's not worth it.

I rented Guitar Hero Aerosmith yesterday and beat it. It was rediculously boring because it was so easy. The songs are not very good at all and I'm not an Aerosmith hater or anything. I have this game for 5 days and after the first day I already had put the game I own, "Guitar Hero III" back in my system because it's replay value is amazing.
I love guitar hero but this game is just plain terrible. The gameplay is the same of course but songs are just not challenging and I think you get my point. I am not even that good at Guitar Hero.

Great game, excellent if you're an Aerosmith fan

This game is basically a reinvention of GH3, plus a bunch of Aerosmith stuff.

What does that mean? It means a great thing! Basically, even though this is an Aerosmith heavy version of Guitar Hero, it's a full game, with a full songlist (40+ songs, although I've not unlocked every one yet), you get the same characters and equipment, with the same option to buy new songs and equipment, and ability to unlock the additional characters and outfits. Essentially, it's everything that's GH3 and then some, since you also get some video clips of Aerosmith, you get to play as Aerosmith (your band basically switches from the characters you choose to Aerosmith members), and you see their venues.

Again, I haven't unlocked everything yet, but there are the same 8 characters as you see from GH3, like Lars, Izzy, and Axel, same 2 unlockables too. You play 2 songs, then play an Aerosmith song "encore", then play more Aerosmith songs to unlock a stage and move on to the next stage and repeat. Don't know if there's a playoff like GH3, since I haven't gotten that far yet (I'll try to update once I get that far). Graphically, the game also looks a lot like GH3, with the same bulbs showing your star power, the same guitar amp showing your score multiplier and counting your streak once you get past 25, how the screen will flash the "50 note streak", "100 note streak", etc, how the notes turn blue when you activate star power.

I'll have to say, if you're gonna make a GH game based off of a band, Aerosmith's one of the best to choose from, since they're so animated on stage, and each of the members are known (not just the singer). The members of Aerosmith were also nice enough to be involved in the creation of this game, being digitally mapped out movement wise to recreate it on screen, and also being interviewed to have clips into the game (I liked how there was a GH guitar in the background, just so you KNOW this clip wasn't taken from some other interview).

A few technical issues, in case anyone is interested:
1. I made the mistake of buying GH3 for the PS2 instead of the PS3, since I had 3 PS2 guitars already, and was going to buy RB for the PS3, and at the time, didn't want to buy more guitars for the PS3. When I found out I wasn't able to download new tracks onto the PS2, even if you have the optional hard drive (because no tracks are available for the PS2 version, oh, well), I bought the PS3 version of GH-A. I went online to the Sonystore and downloaded a GH3 song, and unfortunately, the GH-A game won't recognize the downloaded track. Therefore, although the game engine of GH3 and GH-A appear identical, GH-A won't play GH3 tracks (unless they release a patch later, hopefully?).
2. I have only one PS3 GH guitar, so I tried to see if GH-A will work with a RB guitar, and I can confirm that it does NOT work. Oh, well, I guess I'll have to buy the GH4 bundle!

Overall, definitely recommended for the GH fan, and doubly so if you're also an Aerosmith band.

Note: If you're interested in the bundle instead of the standalone game, feel free to look at my review for the bundle Guitar Hero Aerosmith Wireless Bundle (assuming Amazon posts it!).

I am not a big Aerosmith fan but I am not against them either. I have all the guitar hero games up to this one minus the rocks the 80's game.

If you are into Aerosmith you will like this more than likely. I just don't enjoy the list of songs to be honest, besides the fact that most of them are by one band- they are not their best songs in my opinion. There are some other bands songs on here too but I don't like them much either, Susposedly some songs Aerosmith picked.

I like to be completely fair and I don't think this is a good idea to make the games based on any one bands music. Maybe a better idea would be to make genre based GH games, Such as classic rock, newer rock, southern and so on or go by decades and release sequels in volumes like music collections do.
Many long time guitar hero fans like myself will no doubt be dissapointed that they will have to wait until a game that has some music they like on it comes out. That was one of the main strengths I found in the previous games- that most anyone could find a song they liked or knew at the least.

Aside from my complaints it is a good playing game.

I don't like it much but that is my opinion.

You might like it if aerosmith is popular with you or you don't mind the lack of diversity in the game's band and song list.

I'm sure some people think I am crazy but I have been playing games a long time. Usually after three games in a series they have to go and make some wierd decision like this and upset the way people have got used to something being. It will gain and lose fans of the series.

A big gamble on the developers part I feel but no doubt fueled by their greed and the desire to pump out many more GH games just to make better sales numbers using the rock star image to sell instead of good gameplay. Sadly they will probablly succeed.

Gladly I have been playing this at a friend's house and will not waste my money on it.

I just think looking at the top 40 lists from the past 50 years would be a good guide to follow for future game song tracks.

This game is great! There are going to be people who complain about everything, so, unless you feel like they do, you will enjoy this game! It is so fun! I have been playing since we got it. My brother, sister, and I play against each other and with each other. I love all the songs on it. I am glad it is not all Aerosmith, that would probably be boring, but there is a mix of Aerosmith and non-Aerosmith songs. I love it!

Guitar Hero 3 Expansion Pack

Guitar Hero expansion pack is what this game should of been called. (Not GHA) The song lists are not as good as they could of been. GH should of just sold all the songs on the downloads section of gh3. Another problem with the game is that the hammer on and pull offs are different than gh3. The only reason this game still got 3 stars is because its just an expansion pack to GH3.
