Exploring the New Tomb Raider

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 20 / 20

TR: AOD was anticipated for quite some time, and it is finnaly here! Is it worth getting the new game? I would answer with a resounding "Yes!" I haven't had so much fun playing a game in a long time, and this new chapter of Tomb Raider is the perfect combination of new moves and graphics as well as the old game-play style.
The three highlights of the game are its sound, its graphics, and its exploration. The Audio, recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra, is some of the best and most atmospheric I have heard. The graphics, while not state of the art, are better than any other Tomb Raider. The environments are convincing, and so are Lara's movements and abilities. Her hand-to-hand combat is especially nice. The maps make you feel almost as if you are really there in Paris and Prague.
Now, the game is not without some faults. The new weapons and gun-fighting system is not very fluid, since Lara is limited to only one pistol at a time. Taking away the trademark dual pistols was not a good move. Her movements are also different if she is holding a gun, which makes combta where maneuvering is required difficult to perform. The system requirments are high, but I am running an eMac with only 700 mhz, and the game looks great and hardly has any slowdown excpet in the really big areas.
Over all, this game is a great one, and the storyline and ability to talk to other characters and choose different paths (particularly in the Parisian Ghetto levels) are emersive and exciting. I, for one, am looking forward to the next Tomb Raider!

I wanted to like it.

I really wanted to like this game. I was searching for a game that didn't make me think too hard, so I settled for Tomb Raider AOD. . I'm busy with work and I want my work breaks to be no-brainers these days! : )

First obstacle to fun:
The serial number was missing from the package, just like the support page at Aspyr confirms. They took a week to e-mail a new serial number to me. Wow, what a beginning.

After that I was having o.k. fun with the game for quite some time. I liked the graphics, the story and music. It was neat that some of the game takes place in Prague, where my girlfriend is from.

I did find the controls were a bit weak. It also didn't support my Kensington trackball.

I got about 75% through the game, rating it at about 3-1/2 stars for fun. Maybe 4.

Then I got to the Sanitarium level. Much of the texture is missing. I was directing the character in the dark. Sometime everything was black, sometimes everything was white. Basically that was the end of the game for me. I tried changing my Radeon 9000 back to the stock NVidea GeForce 4 MX and that didn't work either. The 1.0.1 update is applied too.

Go Aspyr.

Terrible Version of Tombraider

My two sons and I had both enjoyed the first two Tombraider releases for Mac, playing them all the way through several times. In stark contrast, this Tombraider AOD is terrible. We had to write to the game developers for a valid serial number. It has jerky, stilted animation, poor response on the controls, coupled with what seems to be a growing fetish on the game developers' parts to interact with criminals and ganglanders. Neither my sons nor I finished the game. It ended up in both the virtual trash and the real trash.

I can't play it

This game is sooo stupid. It doesn't work on my computer, in fact I've tried to install it on three of my other friends computers and it doesn't work on any of them! I would say not to take a chance by buying it itf there is a chance it won't even work.
