Do not, under any circumstances, buy this game. I wish there had been someone like me to stop me when I bought it. It gets one star for not blowing up my computer when I put it in the drive. I want my money back.
First of all, the game much too hard when you're first starting out. Be prepared to die a thousand deaths. The camera controls are horrible, and really just a bad idea. Its almost like driving a car, and the action is through the windshield. Very annoying, stick to classic scrolling. You start with a set amount of soldiers/archers/etc, all which die extremely easily. The storyline is weak and uninteresting, bearly tied to the story. If you actually manage to beat this game without destroying the cd the ending is as unsatisfying as the rest of the game. Save your money for... just about anything else.
Myth - A myth that is is a good game.

This is one of the worst games ever made. It is impossible to beat even the easiest levels without spending hours on learning the terrible interface and horrid battle system. Very bad game for even the highly experienced RTS player. If you have hours to waste, fine, buy this game. Otherwise get a real game that will allow you to have fun.
A good series, but for a few flaws

First, the camera system. What the hell were they thinking, having the scrolling direction dependent on the camera's current angle? That's the most messed-up control I've ever seen. Second, the lack of any sort of mechanism for morale. While your dwarves and bowmen will flee a melee, every soldier whose primary purpose is hand-to-hand combat will always fight to the death. This is completely unrealistic. Third, your units never grow fatigued. A soldier who's just lopped the heads off a dozen zombies will run as fast and swing more effectively (thanks to the veteran unit mechanism) than one who's been hiding since the battle started.
While it does have these gaping flaws, the good points of the game are numerous as well. It frees the player who enjoys the tactical aspects of a battle from the hideous specter of resource management that consumes 80% of your time in other RTS games. The mechanism for veteran units is great, if a bit overpowered; the physics model for archers and dwarves is great as well; and the 3-D battlefields are a great improvement over the standard flat-terrain-with-impassable-decorations field of most RTS games.
Myth was a great pioneer in the field of real-time strategy without resource management, but it's since been superceded by games such as Sid Meier's Antietam and the forthcoming Shogun: Total War.
Great game with its own flaws

This is a great game. I will stay there. It requires all kinds of thought and mastery of military strategy. Overall the game looks amazong, and the blood & gore is second to only Soldier of Fortune.
This game's downfalls however made it nearly unplayable. The game runs absurdly slow on my system, which is currently a 533 mhz system. This really makes for an awful experience. One you get to the later levels, you will have more load time than play time.
I really recommend this if you have a smoking system, it really is great, however, if you run less than a 533 mhz, you are not in for a treat.
Not bad at all

First, the bad news. This game can be extremely hard on the beginner, but practice the unit controls and camera movements, and it should get easier. Myth II is easier to navigate because you can use the mouse for camera movements.
Now the good part. In almost every strategy game I've played, I had to worry about resources constantly. Myth doesn't have that problem. The tactical aspects of the game are amazing; if you hope to survive, you need to know exactly how to use each of your units. You can't rely on "tank rush" tactics like in traditional strategy games, because in most cases you are completely outnumbered. Finally, the music is just stunning, and I recommend you buy the soundtrack from Bungie Software. These games may frustrate the beginner, but the persistant gamer will find a lot to enjoy here.
Great game, with just a bit lacking.

Really a great game. I personally like Myth II a lot better than the first, it's more detailed. It's got some great 3-D graphics, but the camera view can be a little annoying when you are still learning the game. The multiplayer aspect of the game is thrilling. With hundreds of plug-ins on the disk, you can play standard, Civil War style, or my favorite, WWII. Each one has great details. The AI isn't to smart, but it gets the job done. With exploding monsters comming at you from all directions, you are forced to think, think, and think again. The computer will force you to outsmart it, having 5 men of yours agenst rows and rows of enemies. All in all, I would definatly buy it if you are looking for a lot of fun and thrills, and have the 3-D acceloration.

This is a steal at this price. The only thing you have to watch out for is the system requirements. If you have an older computer, you may have trouble with the game. That being said, this is a fun collection of games. This is like the Total War series with nothing but battles. Not quite as pretty as the new games graphics, it still holds up remarkably well. The storyline is interesting, and the game holds up to repeat playing. Worth the bucks.
This is a Hybrid - MAC and PC!

There's a bit of a mistake here, the Total Codex contains hybrid CDs that will work on both Macs and PC's.
That said, this is an excellent offering from those bungie gods. It includes both award winning Myth titles, along with an expansion for Myth 2, and a collection of the best user created maps around. As an experienced player I can tell you that these really are the best maps out there. Really top notch quality. I bought a copy for myself and one for a gift.
If you're a latecomer to the Myth series, this set will not disappoint. Myth 2 still has a huge and loyal following, including myself, almost a year after its release. It is still the only game of its kind, the story is solid and engrossing, and the multiplayer is truly something to be experienced. You'll regret not jumping on this bandwagon.
The only reason not to buy this title is fairly steep system requirements. If you want to play this game competitively, you need at least a 300 mhz processor, 64 megs of RAM, 600 megs of hard disk space, and a good graphics card.
THE Game for everyone!

If you haven't played Myth series before (why?) then you will have a great surprise. Already the first part of the series "The Fallen Lords" broke ground with its amazing graphics and un-strategic-game-like gameplay + story. Then (after a long time of impatient waiting) we got "The Soulblighter" which was definetly the all times best. And as if that wasn't enough, Bungie managed to give the add-on away for free. In one word: Bungie Rules.
The story goes, you are a simple soldier fighting in a war against the evil warlocks and it is not an easy battle. Your units will get better after many battles and so does the story. And 50 years after the final fight dark clouds start to gather again. This time the forgotten lord, Soulblighter, who managed to escape from you and gather some power, came to give his final blow. And with the help of the diar you wrote during the first game "goods" manage to... but that is all ready for you to see.
Anyway, if this seemed too simple for you, then just buy and watch as those "badies" tear of the limbs and heads of soldiers (in the beginning) and tell it again. The game is absolutly fabulous and I'm quite sure you'll love it from the first sight.
a personal favorite

I started playing Myth:TFL when the demo came out in 1997 and I have been playing both Myth:TFL and MythII multiplayer on a regular basis ever since. Never before has a game, or a series of games, kept my attention for such a long period of time.
In addition to great gameplay, graphics and excellent storyline (a Bungie trademark), the multiplayer community is one of the most fun, devoted and interesting group of people I have ever met. Something like this is hard to market, but playing on Bungie.Net (the free multiplayer service) is a lot of fun because the people make it so.
My only complaint is that the ranking system on Bungie.Net is inherently flawed, which makes it (somewhat) easy for people to cheat and alter their scoring. But if you stick to unranked games, you'll find a much better breed of player.
