4.5 stars - Puts the first Game Boy Advance F-Zero to shame!

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 14 / 15

F-Zero GP Legend (2004.) The seventh game in the F-Zero series.

The F-Zero series is, seriously, one of Nintendo's most underrated franchises. Fortunately, in late 2003, F-Zero GX (Gamecube) and F-Zero AX (Arcade) got the series the long overdue revival they had long been deserving. Ever since those games came out, fans have been waiting for the next installment in the series. And it arrived in September of 2004, for the Game Boy Advance. How does F-Zero GP Legend measure up? Is it just Maximum Velocity all over again, or does it blow that title right out of the water? Read on for my review.

PROS:
-THIS GAME IMPROVES ON THE EARLIER GAME BOY ADVANCE F-ZERO TITLE IN PRETTY MUCH EVERY ASPECT. Anything you can think of that was wrong with the earlier game has been, for the most part, corrected in this game.
-TONS OF GAME PLAY MODES. In addition to the Grand Prix mode F-Zero fans have come to know and love, the game uses a Story Mode! In the story mode, you can assume the identity of many different characters, and see how their part of the story ties in to the experience as a whole.
-TONS OF CHARACTERS TO CHOOSE FROM. The first F-Zero (the one for the Super Nintendo) only had four racers. The first one on Game Boy Advance had ten. This one's got thirty of them! You must accomplish tasks to unlock the other racers, but I think this adds to the overall fun of the game.
-THE GAME BORROWS MANY ELEMENTS FROM THE GAMECUBE GAME! One thing I really liked about the Gamecube game is the "your boosts are your life meter" aspect. This title uses the same feature, rather than that boring old "you get a boost after every lap" feature that earlier games had. This forces gamers to take strategy into account.
-WAY MORE DEPTH THAN MOST RACING TITLES. Don't pass this off as "just another racing game" until you've actually played it - You may end up being pleasantly surprised.
-THE GAME HAS SINGLE PAK MULTIPLAYER! This means that as long as you have a multiplayer link cable, two Game Boy Advances, and at least one copy of the game, you can play! Admittingly, the multi-pak linking is funner, but this is still a great feature.
-GRAPHICS AND SOUND/MUSIC WAY BETTER THAN THE EARLIER GBA TITLE. The previous title did all of these things all right, but they have all been greatly improved for this release - there is even some minor voice acting!

CONS:
-ONCE AGAIN, NINTENDO HAS MADE THE CRITICAL ERROR OF FORCING GAMERS TO USE THE SYSTEM'S SHOULDER BUTTONS. If you're like me and have big hands, this is REALLY going to get on your nerves many a time. Don't be surprised if gaming makes your hands sore, too.
-THE GAME COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER. Admittingly, there really isn't a whole lot wrong with this game, but there were a few elements from the Gamecube game that didn't make it into this game that I would have liked to have seen, such as the custom craft creation mode.

OVERALL:
Overall, this is a damn good Game Boy Advance racing title - probably the best game in the genre for the system to date. If you own a Game Boy Advance, you'll be doing yourself a real favor by picking up this game!

Great Game

This game was outstanding. I am a huge fan of the f-zero series, and let me just say that the game feels right. The control is great, the story mode is well-done (more story could have been nice, but it's still enjoyable), and the grand prix mode will take a good chunk of your time.

The ONLY complaint: it's to darn short. I easily beat this thing in a weekend, but that doesn't mean that I don't pick it up every day...

Jeez! Could this game get any better?!

WOW! I couldn't have been more impressed by this one game! The soundtrack is a little annoying (except for the Port Town and Mute City music), but that didn't really matter! There are 34 vehicles in this game that each have their pros and cons. One of the best vehicles in the game is the Blue Falcon, Twinoritta, and the Red Gazelle. The levels were pretty cool, too. Some levels are really annoying, though, like the Illusion level. They have no Electric Bumpers, and the Fire Field level, because of the mines on the ground... The only flaw to this game is that it is WAY too short. The story line is a little tiny, they could've added more, but I still enjoyed it. I got every single vehicle in the game in 2 days, and even got the Platinum Cup ( you have to unlock that cup) and beat it on the Expert class! Only because I stayed up all day and night playing this game, I am a game freak and I am addicted to this game. My favorite character in the game is probably Jack, C.Falcon, or Rick W., or even Black Shadow.
Well, I don't want to give up all of the game, so I'll leave the rest for YOU to find out. Only you can decide the fate of protecting Mute City, and the WORLD!!!!

As good as its GCN counterpart (and that is saying something

F-Zero GX for the gamecube blew gamers away with its release, great graphics and truly challenging gameplay. The problem was the GBA release called Max Velocity, as another reviewer has stated was a pale shadow of a racer especially GX. It offered one gameplay mode essentially and was just too hard to control on the little system.
Then last year Nintendo dropped F-Zero GP Legend to coincide with the Fox cartoon series. What a difference, excellent variety of gameplay modes with a diffuculty level that actually is playable. Last night challenging the time attack mode I was amazed to find that this game will save a GHOST of your run onto the gamepak for you to race against yourself, for every track IMPRESSIVE.
The L and R triggers are a huge component of this game and as I am getting deeper into I am finding it much more fun to play on the GC GBA player as it allows for a little more control and visibility, but it still is playable on the GBA just a little more challenging. Really fun and deep just like I expect from the big N.

Fun with a good capital F

I love this game. You star as eight diffrent people, each with their own storyline. When you meet a person in one story, you meet yourself in the other person's view when playing their story. Each person is racing for their own reasons. But let's get to the gameplay. The story mode can be frustrating at times. Some missions require you to destroy all the other machines and such. If you want to buy this game for a 6-8 year old kid save your money. But overall, great game.

Pleasantly surprised

I bought this game because I am fasinated by racing games for the GBA. I saw this game a week before I purchased it, and it looked really cool. So I bought it, and I liked it. The game is slightly odd, but that's why I liked it so much. The story mode is good, the
time attack is good, ect. The reason why I didn't give this a 5 star rating is because nothing is perfect, and I am sure if I got a perfect version of this game and compared it to this one, I could find some cons.

One of the best racers on the GBA

As far as racing games go for the GBA, the small library that does exist isn't the best. Thank Nintendo for F-Zero: GP Legend; another installment of the futuristic racing series that is undoubtadly the best of the series to ever grace the GBA. Offering a horde of different racers and racing modes, variety is the name of the game here, as F-Zero offers superb graphics and makes excellent use of the GBA's control scheme (since it makes frequent use of the shoulder buttons, it's actually better to play on an original GBA as opposed to the GBA SP) as you race throughout the varied tracks while trying to keep your vehicle from going up in smoke. The gameplay is simple and easy to get into for novices, while it still offers challenging gameplay for veterans of the series. F-Zero: GP Legend bares more resemblance to the classic original Super NES title than any other game in the series on any other platform, and next to Mario Kart: Super Circuit it's the best racer for the GBA. All in all, consider this essential playing.
