I'm not the hardcore gamer but when I saw this I had to play it. Overall, the game is different and sometimes not in a good way. You can read everyone's reviews and basically get an overall idea of what it's about so I won't repeat it. The only complaint I have is that the game was pretty easy to beat, not really that challenging and the ending was not as good as it could have been. I was expecting a better "revelation"! On the other hand, the multiplayer mode is a lot of fun, respawning is quick and the action is better than the story mode. I highly recommend trying it! Overall, a good, not great game, but worth checking out.
FEAR...if you got the muscle to run it

FEAR is your standard FPS type game with a few options thrown in..although not quite revolutionary in terms of it's own bag of tricks, it still manages to improve a few gaming innovations we've seen in the past. I did enjoy the game, beating it in two days which is a big letdown.
To run FEAR you need to have a muscle PC. If you have a 128mb video card, you'll have to think about getting a more powerful videocard, somewhere around the 256mb to 512mb GEforce cards. This is a must. On top of this, you'll need some extra memory to run this smoothly, a 2gb memory should do it, and at least a 3.0ghz processor. Now...just to warn you, these recommended upgrades I mentioned will only run the game to at least medium texture quality with shaders. No doubt the game shows some potential in the graphics department. Lighting is well done..thanks to the Direct 3D Shaders capability. I still think the Unreal Engine is still the best graphics engine out there, followed by a close second from Half-Life's Source-engine. One major gripe about FEAR's graphics engine is it's complete lack of curves. Shapes lack curves. Most of what you'll see are sharp corners with no smoothing. Objects and corridors are boxey and completely linear making the environment seem amateurish compared to Unreal or Half-Life's dynamic and smooth graphics.
FEAR attempts to create a suspense-horror FPS type of environment. It tries but fails to capture the horror-effect found in two classic games i.e. System Shock 2 and Clive Barker's Undying. A few scary moments do come up like the image of a child standing by the corner in a dark corridor but these are effects that we've seen and have grown accustomed to after watching The Ring and The Grudge. Nothing new. The game starts out with a scary suspense roll but eventually grows stale and predictable as you get deeper in the game.
Gameplay is a mix. Again, nothing revolutionary but like improvements from effects we've seen from other games. One effect is the bullet-time effect ala Max Payne and Matrix. It does it with some fantastic display of graphics that actually shows a slowdown in real-time, an improvement to a revolutionary idea from Max Payne. But still, this grows stale as the game progresses.
My biggest gripe is the length of the game. It's short. A novice can easily cut his way through the game in four days; for an expert, this is a one day affair.
So it is a good game? I would say YES. But you need to have a powerful PC to get this running with decent framerates. Is it worth the $49.99? Yes but don't expect much in the way of story development and game time. Eye-candy is worth the money you pay plus the few minutes of scare-factor. My advice...wait for the price to go down.
Outstanding game -- big time hardware requirements

I just finished this game last week. This game is one of the best fps games I've played. I don't want to compare it to HL2 because they are equally great and a bit different. The storyline in FEAR is outstanding. Rarely does a fps game make the hair on the back of my neck stand up and give me chills, but this one did.
I gave the game 4 stars overall because it can't be played in it's full glory on most computers. I played the game on an Athlon 64 3000+, 1GB RAM, and a Radeon 9800 PRO 128 MB video card. I kept having to tone down the resolution and detail. I was able to get through the game at 800x600 with low detail, but still had some lock-ups. I would like to see it on a Radeon x850.
Overall, great game. Definately not for kids. Worth the hardware headaches.

F.E.A.R. delivers outstanding first person shooting action with the thrills and chills that you get from movies like The Ring and The Grudge. The game is capable of freaking you out with moments that are inspired from those movies. But it's intelligent enemy A.I and good level design (though it has the tendency to have levels that are repetitive) that make it a great first person shooter. Enemies will use tactics and work together to take you down. You have the ability to slow down time, just like the Matrix. You'll need this in the harder difficulties when the swarms of enemies proves to be too difficult. Some levels are repetitive because they tend to go on too long. But the graphics are awesome especially if you have the specs to run it. Having a good sound system will definitely add to the chilly experience. Story-wise; it tries to be cinematic, but it's sometimes hard to follow. Basically, it's inspired somewhat by the The Ring. But put it in a military, scientific research type of setting. I had fun with it.
Most respectable shooter since half life 2

Utilizing the best elements of multiple genres of play, Fear sadly underplays it's horror aspect and definitly overplays it's visceral gunplay, if that can even be a bad thing. Perhaps it wouldn't have mattered, had the game not actually tried to diverge from the stock shooter fare, and become the more paranormal, psycological game that it can be..Let us hope if there is a sequel that game will try to lead players in the direction they hinted upon with this game, and not relegate itself to another half life homage.
Overall a good game

For anyone who likes FPS games, this is for you. I personally loved the storyline and the gameplay, though more varied environments were needed. The game has great slow-motion action, and if you look carefully you'll be able to have a whole lot of slow-mo bar by the end of the game. The game is pretty linear but it doesn't appear that way - I often found myself wondering which way to go (which would lead to more ammo, power-ups, etc). The weapons are great and seem very realistic, despite the futuristic look to most of them. You will definatly love the AI of the enemy soldiers. I'm sure this has been gone over many times, so I won't repeat everything they do, but it's just great. FEAR is relatively short, but you will enjoy the time you have and may find yourself playing it two or three times.
Fun but kind of repetitive

Fun first shooter game. Graphics are excellent. Background music and sound is gripping. The setting is mostly dim, so you have to turn out the lights and turn up your monitor to see what the heck you're doing. In lot of ways it's similar to Doom, but with a lot more variety of enemies, weapons, and environment. The stuff you do in FEAR is still fairly repetitive. Game is easy even on the hardest setting. I do not know how one can consider this a short game. It took me 2-3 hours per night for a couple of weeks to finish it.
The storyline is the biggest downside of the game - it is paper thin. I still could not figure out the story after beating the game. Ending was sort of dissapointing. Ironically, it was by far the easiest part of the game. The programmers trick you into giving you endless amounts of health kits, but no big bad enemy at the end.
System requirement is high, so be sure you have a powerful computer and video card. I'm running an Athlon 2 GHz with GE Force 7600GT 256MB VRAM and 1 GB RAM. Graphics is mildy choppy when I first play, but it disappears within a minute. Overall I recommend the game.
Fun game, BUT......

it just couldn't hold my attention. I guess I still hold all 1st person shooters to the Half Life 2 standard.
The graphics are good, but not great. Certain things look good from a distance, but not up close-even with the anti-aliasing turned all they way up. The sound is o.k. The gameplay is somewhere in between good, and o.k. There just wasn't enough about the game to make me keep playing. Luckily I bought the game used.
The only gripe I have is that I cannot access the special features on the DVD. Vivendi customer service was no help, so I just gave up. It is nice having the game on one disk, but I would like to get EVERYTHING I paid for.
All in all the game was o.k., but not ground-breaking like it has been described as.

Having a new dual core machine, 1gB ram and a ati radeon 1600xt 512 mb video card, I had to pick this much hyped game up to see how my computer ran the game. After turning down a couple settings just a hair, I had the game running consistently around 50-60 frames per second, and could easily tweak things higher. One of the things F.E.A.R. incorporates that should be in any shooter is a self-testing video that gives you frame rates and makes it easy to see what makes a big difference and what doesn't.
Now for the game itself. Wow. Scary as heck, and very, very gory. Downright disturbing. I wouldn't let anyone under 16 even think about this one. Language is adult, almost as many f-bombs as real ones in this game. The story gets so convoluted that it's easy to forget. This game is groundbreaking in the same way that the first Resident Evil for PS One was. Terrific gameplay, and difficulty levels, unlike some shooters (GRAW being the worst example), is spot on. I played it through on the "normal" level, and it was challenging but not too much so. I enjoyed the game enough to actually play it through again on the next higher level. I'm not an online player, so single player experience is of paramount importance to me, and this one delivers. I've gone on too long. Just pick this one up IF you are a fan of the genre.

Awesome Graphics, Original Storyline, Great Multiplayer options, What more could you ask for! I played this game for ten minutes and got sucked in. . . The things that stand out most are awesome weapon power, SLOW DOWN TIME OR SPEED UP TIME DEPENDING on how you view that, Push the conrol button and speed thru the level massacring the enemy with any weapon. Millions of hidden items in this game, you'll need to find most of them to power thru the levels. And lastly, Finally a great multiplayer interface, makes this the icing on the cake. Awesome multi- levels, great hidding spaces, BIG BANG FOR MY BUCK. . . . 5 stars nothing less.
