Since I read and rely on these reviews so often, I should probably contribute one.
Lord of the Rings Online is a well crafted and very entertaining online multiplayer game. The monthly subscriptions certainly stack up, but I am enjoying it and new content is being added sufficiently often that it's money pleasantly spent..
As well as the "run around and hit it with an axe" side of things, there is a roleplaying community who can often be found lurking in the Prancing Pony or elsewhere doing their thing, which adds greatly to the atmosphere. The "crafting" side of things also adds depth to the gameplay. There are a legion of players who spend as much time making cool stuff as they do hitting things with the stuff they just made....
It's an updated version of world of warcraft with hobbits..... What more could you want.
Really have a great time.

This is the first game like this that I've done. I have watched my son with Ever Quest and WOW, but never played before. The graphics are wonderful and does have some of the feel and aspects of the movies and books. I really love it and I'm so glad I started playing.
Words can't truly descibe it.

Wow, could just about sum it up, but I'll go a little deeper.
This game amazes me on so many fronts. This is the first MMO I have played, and I have jumped into it without a hitch. The controls and options that are available to me could easily make me frustrated, but the developers have crafted a simple interface for everything. I haven't gotten into much of the story yet. For those in the "know" I'm only on book 2 chapter 1. What I have completed storywise has been fun and entertaining. The non-epic quests are alot of fun too. There is the occasional kill "850,000" orcs and collect their "whatever", but those are few and far between.
The graphics are completely awesome. I don't have a top of the line computer, GeForce 6800; Pentium 3 gHz with HT, and 3gb ram, but I can run all of the graphic options at their highest level. I experience a slight stutter or lag when a new area is loading, but its hardly noticable.
The most enjoyable part of the game for me is the social aspect. I have never played for an extended period of time without joining a fellowship of other players. This game a great community. You won't be dissapointed with this part of the game at all. I have a long list of online friends that I can call on and they will join up with me and offer help whenever they can.
I could go on for a while longer so let me sum up my review with this. I swore that I would NEVER play an MMORPG. I thought the idea of paying upwards of $[..] or $[...] for a game, and then having to pay a monthly fee on top of that was stupid. This game changed my mind. It's totally worth it.
Excellent MMO

I've been playing this game since closed beta and it continues to impress me. Turbine has done a wonderful job and the speed at which they release free updates (also known as Books) is amazing -- Blizzard, take note. They do a good job of listening to the wants of their users without dumbing down the game itself.
Tolkien's world is beautifully rendered in this game, and I look forward to seeing more of Middle Earth as the game world continues to grow.
I think they misspelled Warcraft on the box

If you're looking for a review for LOTRO, you might as well just pop over to World of Warcraft and see what people have to say about that game. This is just WoW with a few skin changes and some names taken out of a couple of Tolkein books.
To be fair, they did expand it a bit. Now as you grind pointlessly through kill and gather quests that have absolutely nothing to do with the story, you can earn "Deeds" and "Titles" to show off or improve your character's abilities. But, otherwise, everything about this game feels exactly like WoW, from the character control right on up to the gameplay itself.
If you like WoW and you just want a change of scenery and a new story, go ahead and give it a shot. If you didn't like WoW, you might want to hold off and see how it holds together at higher levels. WoW wore out its welcome for me when my grind got me into Desolace at about level 44. Whether this game will sputter and fall falt on its face as well remains to be seen.
One final point: you might want to hold off briefly either way. While the whole thing is clearly nothing more than a direct copy of World of Warcraft, it's not nearly as polished yet. Some things don't work right, and it's easy to get yanked out of the game's environment when you go to open a door or access something and get a generic "General Error!" message.
Caveat emptor...
Not for Player Versus Player

The game has some unique things for example the conjunctions. You can play against many Non Player Characters and use different tactics. Overall the story line is very interesting and it is great for its book like qualities.
The biggest issue with this game is that eventually, when you have completed the quests and built your character, you will want to try out some Player Versus Player, or in Lord of The Rings Online it is called Player versus Monster Player. It is horrible. There is no reward for loyalty, the only reward is for Players to switch to the side that is winning as fast as they can. Many of the battles degenerate into vast lopsided ganking teams. The Player Versus Player battle is like this typically.
Stealthed player traps you so you can not move from 15 to 30 seconds. Vast numbers of opposing players surround you and you are reduced to zero in about 5 seconds. The forums are filled with the major game breaking elements of PvP.
Play the game if you want to enjoy the story line and the Non Player Character fighting.
I am one who is rather bored with Non Player Character fighting and dont need to pay a monthly fee to do it. 1 Star. overall. But I did enjoy the story.
Not Quite WoW

This is a nice attempt by Turbine to compete with Blizzard's World of Warcraft. It runs OK with a good gaming system, but no where near the smoothness of WoW. There are loads of quests to do and many are soloable. I was not happy with the monetary system, but few MMORPGs get that right. The tradeskill system is a bit overcomplicated, but if you really like the trades in these games, than this is the one for you. All in all, the best offering of an MMORPG since WoW was released.
If you loved the books, you'll dig this game

I've written some extensive reviews elsewhere so I'm not going to reinvent the wheel here... but the short version goes like this:
The game is very true to the books, and really does a great job of making you feel like you are in there. The environments are lush and beautiful with the right graphics card, and the thrill of "seeing" these places you have read about is hard to explain to non-readers of the books.
As for gameplay - its evolutionary, not REVolutionary. They didnt try to make it all-new just for the sake of being different... I feel like they took things that worked well from many other MMO games and sort of blended them in rather nicely. There are obvious touches from World of Warcraft, Everquest, etc. in here - which is really a plus, since it lowers the learning curve for experienced players. If you are a hardcore PvP player, maybe this isnt for you... but even then, you can engage in Monster play which is crazy good fun of a very unique variety.
Overall, this is the game that broke my long addiction to WoW. If you are tired of the same-old in your current game, or you want to see what this MMO thing is all about, give this one a try. You might find its just what you were looking for.
Lots of fun for LOTR fans

I'm up to about level 25 and so far this game is really fun. If you've read the books and seen the movies then there are lots of interesting people and places that you'll come across and recognize immediately. The game puts you right in the story. There are lots of updates on the horizon that look great - like player housing.
Great game :D

I found both the graphics and the overall presentation to be one of the best mmo's I've played. People were constantly compairing it to WOW but to be honest I found that LOTRO was a much well rounded game with a more mature audience, of course not at weekends... But genrally in game atmousphere is really great. The missions are fun and you always seem to be learning something new. People in parties vary as other games do but it's great to get into a fellowship and play.
Great game over all.
